Bioo (Sitara-e-Imtiaz), for community deveopment in 1979 in the form of HANDS (Heath And Nutrition Deveopment Society), have now turned out into one of the argest not for profit organization at nationa and internationa eves. HANDS has traveed through a ong and striving journey of 36 years under the guidance of its chairman,efforts of its staff and support of community deveopment partners. Today HANDS stands as one of the eading civi society organization of the country with a work span in a the 4 provinces of Pakistan. HANDS registered itsef as charity organization in UK in 2014 as non profit organization in companies act 2006 of Engand and Waes. Later HANDS Internationa estabished its offices in London United Kingdom (UK) and Kathmandu Nepa. HANDS started its forma journey of intervention from a pubic sector hospita in Karachi as Heath And Nutrition Project in 1979 ead by the then head of the department of paediatrics Civi Hospita Karachi, Prof. A. G. Bioo (Sitara-e-Imtiaz). He was seriousy concerned about the poor patients coming from Karachi rura in miserabe conditions.the first step towards community deveopment was initiation of a project in which a Primary Heath Care center was estabished in a remote viage, more than 40 kiometers away from city center. The interns of the professor foowed his vision to deveop "Heathy Educated Prosperous Pakistan" (HANDS vision in initia days), graduay the project transformed into the organization caed Heath And Nutrition Deveopment Society (HANDS) and HANDS Internationa. In 36 years HANDS has evoved as a mode of community deveopment. This integrated mode comprise of key programs of Socia Mobiization, Gender & Deveopment, Human & Institutiona Deveopment, Monitoring Evauation & Research, Information Communication Resource and Advocacy, Heath Promotion, Education & Literacy, Liveihood Enhancement, Infrastructure Deveopment Energy Water & Sheter, Disaster Management and Socia Marketing. Management Structure: HANDS is governed by 12 members eected "Governing Board" who are vounteers and are ed by Chairman of the organization. Chief Executive is defecto member of the governing board as we. Board provides poicy guideine and foow the management to pursue management poicies in the spirit of organization's vision. The board is comprised of professionas from different sectors, phianthropist, community representatives and ex-empoyees of HANDS. There are four tiers in management structure, first tier is the Higher Management Committee which is top management and comprise of 4 executives and a Chief Executive. The second tier is "Steering Committee" which comprise of 12 Genera Managers (GMs) and the 04 senior executives are aso memeber of the steering committee. The GMs are responsibe for operation of different project activities of their program under the eadership of Chief Executive and senior Executives. A the districts heads that is Districts Executive Managers (DEMs) and members of Steering Committee form a 3rd tier caed Management Committee. The fourth tier exists at district eve caed the District Management Committee which comprise of district project staff, DEM and is chaired by District Patron and representative of head office staff. HANDS at present have more than 1900 fu time staff and more than a miion Community Based Vounteers (CBVs) who participate at "Monthy Community eve forums" ed by Chairperson of Community Based Organization (CBO) and respective district staff participate as defecto member in these forums. Management Certification: HANDS is certified by Pakistan Center for Phianthropy (PCP) and is tax exempted by Income tax department of government of Pakistan. HANDS has aso successfuy competed the Institutiona Management Certification Program (IMCP) of USAID for management standards. We are accredited with European Union and have centra contractor registration with US Government (DUNS No.). HANDS aso possess membership with IUCN (Internationa Union of Conservation of Nature). Networking with Civi Society Organizations: HANDS has chair of "108 Nationa Organizations" network under the umbrea of "Scaing Up Nutrition (SUN) Civi Society Organization Aiance (CSA)". HANDS is aso hoding the chair of "South Asia Coordinator for Peope Heath Movement (PHM). HANDS is aso a member of Nationa Humanitarian Network (NHN) and Pakistan Humanitarian Forum (PHF). HANDS is aso a member of Nationa Disaster Risk Reduction Forum (DRR) and Human Resource Deveopment Network (HRDN). 5 HANDS Integrated Deveopment Best Practice Modes In the preceding years HANDS has successfuy competed numerous projects and the experience from each project has enabed as to deveop severa best practices mode of services and trainings. Each program component of HANDS has specific set of best practices services modes and best practices training modes. These modes have been successfuy appied and can be modified or adjusted to meat the requirement of any new project. Besides, few new and innovative modes have aso been introduced in precedings as the scope and span of work has extended. The achievements of each best practice service and training modes of each program incude: Infrastructure Deveopment Energy WASH and Sheter (IDEAS) IDEAS is committed to provide good quaity infrastructure to the target popuation. IDEAS program is a series of projects, based on the foundation of fied tested best practices and proven capabiities. The innovative modes by HANDS IDEAS are ow cost, durabe, sociay acceptabe and environment friendy. A view of sheter provided top the community The best practice service modes: Drinking Water faciities, Street Pavement Faciities, Sanitation, Hand wash Faciity, Low Cost Sheter, Irrigation Schemes, Househod Technoogies, Disaster Risk Reduction Schemes, Communication Schemes, Socia Sector Schemes, Aternate Energy Schemes, Annaj Ghar. The best practice training modes: Training on Water Sanitation & Hygiene and Training of Masons and Community Members on Construction of Sheters with Lime Stabiized Soi. Overa 600 drinking water faciities were constructed incuding under water storages and ground surface drinking water storages. Besides 46 water suppy ines and 02 fiter pants were aso constructed hand pumps have aso been instaed. Overa 166 street pavements have been aid down. Overa 240 sanitation schemes have been competed so far under this mode. Tota 4082 emergency atrines have been constructed as part of sanitation mode. So far 16,141 permanent atrines have been constructed in different target areas to improve the sanitary conditions. Overa 1478 hand washing faciities have been constructed so far in schoos for the chidren. Overa 78,880 sheters have been successfuy constructed in preceding years and deivered to the communities in different districts of Sindh, Baochistan and Southern Punjab. Currenty 3,379 sheters are under construction and wi be competed in June ,408 famiies have aso been provided roofing kits for their houses. Thus, overa 111,667 famiies were benefited by HANDS in providing sheter under this mode. HANDS under this intervention has invested neary 2.7 biion in arge since ,202 irrigation schemes have been competed in preceding years incuding tube wes and water courses/channes. IDEAS program has so far successfuy made and provided 217 Naadi (biosand fiter) to the famiies in target communities. Overa 27,548 Portabe Ceramic Water Fiters have been provided to the famiies in target viages. Overa 7,908 Energy Efficient Stoves have been made in target communities. 07 protection was have been constructed for protection in coasta area. 03 jetty has been successfuy constructed and handed over to the community. Tota 1,259 ink roads have been competed in various districts. Overa achievement is construction of 398 bridges/cuverts in target areas. 1,309 schoos were renovated during the ast 04 years of intervention. 150 Transit Sheter Schoos (TSS) and 25 Chid Friendy Spaces (CFS) have been constructed. 6 HANDS District Compexes 500 Annaj Ghar (seed bins) have been constructed for the communities to preserve food grains in the target areas. 101 trainings have been conducted on WASH with a participation of 1,829 peope. Education and Literacy Program The utimate goa of Education and Literacy Program is to promote education for human and institutiona deveopment. The primary focus of the program is provision of primary education, capacity buiding of teachers and strengthening of Schoo Management Committee (SMC). Ti date 51 Parwarish Markaz have been estabished and 51 Parwarish Workers have been trained with tota enroment of 1367 chidren, incuding 904 girs and 463 boys. Estabished 5442 ECD casses in 1814 Government schoos of Sindh. Provided support to Mir Masoom Shah Library at Sukkur, to deveop reading habits in parents and students (with focus of eary grades students) Overa 605 ALCs have been estabished and 605 ALC teachers trained. Tota 26,910 earners have been enroed in the ALCs. The Heath Action Schoo service mode has been appied in 220 schoos. A tota of 28,775 students have been benefited through these schoos in previous years. 861 mae and femae teachers have aso been trained in this mode. During the preceding years, 568 mode schoos have been deveoped in the Schoo Heath Screening mode. The number of students enroed in these schoos were The personne trained for this mode incuded 568 teachers, 57 heath care providers and 30 Government officias (In charges). Schoo Nutrition mode has been appied in 346 schoos in target areas. The other accompishment of this mode incude opening of bank accounts of 346 schoos, training of 508 teachers and 10 master trainers. Monitoring of height and weight of 50,000 students was done and same number were aso provided food. Overa 2,647 schoos have been adopted under this mode, more than 0.31 miion students and neary 8,499 teachers have been benefited through this mode. The materia suppied to the schoo incuded stationary, teaching materia and bag incuding schoo renovation. Tota 78 HANDS Academies have been estabished and 2340 students have been benefited through Famiy Reading Program. 78 teachers are trained on ECE and different subjects (e.g: Math, Engish and Science). Tota 78 CBOs/SMCs are trained on schoo management, record keeping, monitoring and socia mobiization etc. Life Ski Based Education training mode has been appied in tota 153 schoos and 9486 gir students, boys students and 153 teachers have aso been trained. 7 01 training was conducted with 03 participants. A tota of 90 earners have been benefited through the mode of Famiy Reading Program in previous years. Overa 31 trainings have been conducted and 605 participants were trained in Adut Literacy Training mode. So far 05 trainings have been conducted and 106 participants were trained in Muti Grade Teaching mode. Under Arts and Craft, 15 trainings were conducted and 385 participants were trained during preceding years. Overa 81 trainings have been conducted Eary Chid Deveopment mode and 987 community teachers have been trained in these trainings. A tota of 309 trainings have been conducted for Government teachers and tota of 1904 Government teachers have been trained. 51 trainings have been conducted for government schoo teachers and 1252 teachers were trained under Heath Action Schoo mode. Heath Program HANDS Heath Promotion program incude integration of heath interventions with other socia deveopment initiatives. The services are provided in coordination with oca Community Based Organizations (CBOs). HANDS Hospita Jamkanda Viage Karachi The best practice service modes: Misai / Marvi Workers (Community Heath Workers), Rehabiitation of Disabed, Output Based Aid (OBA) Voucher Scheme (NARI), Adopt a Hospita, Community Based Management of Acute Manutrition (CMAM), Birthing Station Mode, Teeheath (Teemedicine) Service Deivery Mode, Traditiona (trained) Birth Attendant (TBA), The best practice training modes: Community Midwifery (CMW) Training Schoo, Training of Traditiona Birth Attendants (TBAs), Psychosocia Webeing Training, IUCD Training, Community Heath Workers (MARVI Workers) Cient Centred Training, SRH (Sexua Reproductive Heath) Trainings, Cient Centered Approach (CCA) Training for Heath Care Providers, More than 2700 trained Marvi workers in 11 districts throughout Pakistan. 4,207 assistive devices were provided to the PWDs in 05 Union Councis i.e. Ibrahim Hyderi, Rehri, Landhi Mashke and Awaran. Orthotic devices and prosthesis were provided to 395 PWDs, incuding hearing aids to 876, vision gasses to 1,103, whee chairs to 159, crutches (Besakhee) to 55, wakers to 36, white canes to 19, toiet seats to 167, Cerebra Pasy (CP) Chairs for 26 Chidren and tricyces to 25 PWDs. Overa 2891 PWDs were provided with support through this service mode. 119 famiy members of the bedridden Person with Disabiities (PWD's) were trained as attendants. 150 teachers of Bin Qasim town were trained on incusive education. 83 PWDs were trained and supported to estabish their enterprise. 77 Awareness raising sessions were attended by PWDs and their famiy members on geneticay transmitted diseases, famiy marriages, heath and hygiene, reproductive heath, care during pregnancy, vaccination, famiy panning and breastfeeding etc. 16 private secondary heathcare faciities have so far been identified and strengthened for EmONC services. Overa more than 5,343 high risk cases reated to materna, ANC, PNC and neo-nata heath have been identified and managed through this project. Conduction of 2,236 deiveries have been done incuding caesarian sections. Overa 1932 neonates have been managed so far. Overa 10,561 NARI referra forms were distributed in the target communities. FM Radio message was deveoped and reayed to introduce NARI referra voucher (number of times as per agreement with oca FM radio) in the target area. The program has two components i.e. On- Farm and Off- Farm. Foowing tabe shows the achievement of Community Based Management of Acute Manutrition: Activity Tota 963,821 49,225 15,358 60,456 35, ,252 39,465 19,384 HANDS has so far estabished 82 Birthing Stations for provision of RH services to the communities. The Tee Heath Service mode is in piot phase and is being tested for deivering heath services in district Awaran in Baochistan. Certain sessions HANDS Brief Profie have been successfuy conducted with cients/patients and HANDS hospita Jamkanda. Now HANDS is making its efforts to ink it further with the Dow University of Heath Sciences Karachi to ensure the quaity heath services. HANDS estabished 02 Community Midwifery schoos incuding 01 in Karachi Rura Jamkanda Hospita) and 01 in Matiari district (THQ Haa). Both schoos were registered with PNC and hod a good reputation among the Midwifery schoos in the country. About 461 CMWs were enroed, out of which 375 successfuy competed their training. Moreover, 86 (18.65%) candidates were either dropped out or coud not succeed in the examination. Overa TBAs have been trained. 30 professionas from 26 NGOs have been trained by HANDS and another 201 professionas of 78 NGOs were trained through step down training. 185 participants have been trained on IUCD insertion in 07 trainings. 132 trainings incuding refresher trainings have been conducted for MARVI workers and 1,527 MARVIs have been trained so far. HANDS aso conducted 35 trainings of 882 participants in Reproductive Heath. 161 trainings have been conducted for HCPs attended by 2,646 participants. Disaster Management program Disaster management aims to reduce, or avoid the potentia osses from hazards, assure prompt and appropriate assistance to victims of disaster, and achieve rapid and effective recovery. The best practice training modes: Gender Sensitization Training for professionas, Gender Sensitization Short Session, Women Mobiization and Leadership Training. Impementation of gender poicy is a continuous process as it is an integra part of every project. The poicy has been impemented in a projects incuding 196 projects in the recent preceding years. Sexua harassment poicy was impemented and practiced in 31 district offices of the organization with 3,551 professiona staff. This poicy was aso impemented in 6,114 Community Based Organiztions (CBOs). In preceding years, HANDS GAD program organized 44 events as part of advocacy campaign which were attended by 6,025 participants from different waks of ife.
