Ashland Health Center and Comanche County Hospital joined forces with three other communities to raise funds for WEPAC, a nonprofit alliance that provides education, resources and preventive cancer services for women in Wilmore, Englewood, Protection, Ashland and Coldwater, Kan. Not only did the fund-raiser attract a sold-out crowd and was broadcast on television, but it caught the attention of regional media as well as Sports Illustrated. It all started with a conversation between an Ashland hospital employee, Joe LaBelle, and CEO Benjamin Anderson. LaBelle s grandmother had died of breast cancer, and LaBelle and Anderson were discussing the fact that the closest mammography equipment was two and a half hours away in Wichita. They talked about collecting money at a local basketball game and the idea mushroomed. Sports Illustrated writer Joe Posnanski described what happened next: What followed -- all the calls and people who volunteered to help -- is the same story as the ending of It s awonderful Life, when all those people came rushing into George Bailey s living room with money to offer. As Posnanski put it: One should never underestimate the power of small towns. After the idea of a benefit basketball game featuring local and celebrity players was conceived, the first call went to one of the biggest Kansas basketball stars All-American Jackie Stiles, a Claflin native who holds Kansas high school and NCAA scoring records. The former WNBA rookie of the year agreed to coach one of the teams. She was joined by Cynthia Cooper, the all-time leading WNBA scorer. Olympic gold medalist Ruth Riley, a current WNBA player who was born in Ranphoto by Loree Krier som, Kan., agreed to coach the other team along with Kristi Leeper-Meis who led Fort Hays State to a Division II National Championship. Then Shalee Lehning, Sublette native, and Marlies Gipson of McPherson, who had been teammates at Kansas State, agreed to play on opposing teams. University of Kansas and other Continued on page 5

Pilot program benefits health science teachers, students With a goal of interesting more students in health care careers, a pilot program for high school health science cluster teachers initiated this summer will be expanded next year to other areas of the state. Because of their proximity to the KU Medical Center, the first teacher participants were from Kansas City, but plans are for the program to be expanded next summer to include teachers from the 30 Kansas school districts that offer the health science cluster, according to Jen Dolson, senior coordinator for health career promotion for KUMC s Area Health Education Centers (AHECs). In the past five years, the statewide AHECs have broadened their focus to include the promotion of careers in the health care field across the state, according to Dolson. Key partners in the effort are Kansas high schools that offer the Health Science Career Cluster, which identifies pathways from high school to college and graduate school and to the workplace. Recently, the Kansas State Department of Education introduced a new approval process that requires health care cluster teachers to obtain 200 contact hours in the industry over a three- High school science teacher, Stephen Palmerin, learns about the training and professional programs offered at KUMC with some hand on experience. year period. Dolson said the AHECs and KUMC saw an opportunity to help teachers meet the requirement. The result was a pilot program that brought teachers to the KUMC campus to learn about health care career training programs and health care fields. We feel this requirement may be challenging to many of our rural high schools with health science career cluster education, Dolson said. We are hoping to expand the program to where we can bring teachers in from all parts of the state. In summer 2009, key individuals at KUMC, in particular the School of Medicine s Pre-Matriculation Program, and Gwendolyn Swoope, executive director of the office of cultural enhancement and diversity, and three health science teachers from the Kansas City, Kan., school district created a pilot program. It is designed to increase understanding of the academic preparation and the admission requirements necessary for health profession programs. The teachers in the pilot program received 60 contact hours during June by attending lectures and labs; meeting with recruiters and advisers for the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing and the School of Allied Health; exploring biomechanics and bioengineering in the Orthopedic Research Center; and touring the brain imaging center, diabetes research lab, radiology department and other areas of KUMC. For more information, contact Dolson at jdolson@kumc.edu or Participants in the pilot program posted enthusiastic responses to their journals: There have been multiple talks among the three of us about how many awesome networks we have made that can be used in the future for our students. I really feel excited about the year to come and areas of content that I want to focus on that I think will help our students get better prepared for their futures in medicine or related health care fields. I still can t get over the fact of being able to see how many different jobs in health care are available and getting to walk side by side with many of the people performing their tasks and learning what they actually do and what skills are important to their individual fields. I really do believe that I can take a lot out of this experience that will help me better prepare my students for medical and health care careers. Through the lectures, labs, tours, side chats and observations, I have seen many characteristics that a good student interested in the health care field must have. 3

Singer Debby Boone makes Bedtime Hugs possible Creative memorial will keep on giving at Marysville hospital When James Ungerer died in late 1987, his wife, Nelda, and their four children wanted a meaningful memorial. They decided to donate funds to purchase copies of the book Bedtime Hugs for Little Ones to give to each baby born at Community Memorial Healthcare (CMH), a critical access hospital in Marysville, their hometown. The memorial was able to provide books to newborns for several years. Debby Boone, Grammy-award winning singer of You Light Up My Life, had written the book, which was illustrated by her husband Gabriel Ferrer. Featured in the book are their four children as well as the family pet, Tex the Mouse. When Nelda passed away in December, her children wanted to continue the book-donation tradition but were very disappointed to learn the book was no longer in print. The Ungerer s daughter Marna Raymond contacted Harvest House Publishers and discovered that the book s rights had reverted to the author. She decided she had nothing to lose and contacted the author directly to ask if they could pay for copies to be reprinted. In her to Boone, she told her how much her 82 years young mother had meant to their family and the community. This is an excerpt from her letter: She was a pillar of the community and volunteered for many things, including delivering Meals on Wheels, driving the elderly to appointments and meetings, serving as supervisory judge on the election board, helping run and working at the Pony Express museum in Marysville, and finding time to help a local merchant by managing her shop so the owner could take periodic vacations and attend business 4 Kansas c o n n e c t i o n s James Ungerer and Marna Raymond, children of the late James and Nelda Ungerer, presented the books to Joyce Maddox, director of nursing, on June 8, their mother s birthday. events out of town. We marveled at her positive, can-do outlook on life. In addition to her busy schedule, she always had time to spend with us kids and our families.... We all thought she would live to be 100+ but unfortunately and without preamble or warning, she became ill on November 14th. She was diagnosed with cancer and on December 14th, after 32 painful days, she passed away. Ms. Boone, my Mom did so many things for so many people in her community, and she was my best friend. I, my brothers, and our families want to do something special for her as a memorial. She was instrumental in picking your book for my father s memorial tribute and hopefully we can honor her the same way. I am including a picture of my Mom if you could look into her eyes, you would see what a kind and wonderful lady she was. Raymond s appeal proved so successful that not only did they receive 80 paperback copies of the book, but Boone autographed all of them. The books were presented to CMH on June 8, Nelda s birthday. That same day the first book was presented to newborn Nicholas Dean Powell, son of Sean and Jane Powell of Marysville. CMH wants to extend many thanks to Marna Raymond, James Ungerer, Jeffrey Ungerer and Jon Ungerer for presenting the children s books to our facility in memory of their mother, said Joni Nietfeld, CMH public relations director. We appreciate the thoughtful and generous donation to our hospital facility.

Hoops continued from cover WNBA alumni and breast cancer survivors signed on as the project gained momentum. Local players came from the Ashland Blue Jays and the South Central Timberwolves teams. Pink and white uniforms were donated for both teams. KU and K-State cheerleaders volunteered for the game and to lead a cheer clinic the next day. The K-State pep band got on the bandwagon and Fox Sports Midwest agreed to televise the event live in four states. The game at Ashland High School quickly sold out, and tickets were offered for sale for an afternoon practice session at South Central High School in Coldwater. Those who couldn t get tickets to the game were able to watch it free on a large-screen TV set up at the football field. Ninety percent of the money raised went to the WEPAC Alliance with the remaining 10 percent going to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, which was founded by the North Carolina State University coach to help fight cancers in women. A health themed community fair on Saturday morning was followed by a forum on women s health issues moderated by Christina Osbourn, executive director of the Mid-Kansas Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Among the speakers were basketball legend Cynthia Cooper who talked about the importance of self-checks and mammograms and how women tend to manage everyone s health before their own. Corrie Edwards, executive director of the Kansas Health Consumer Coalition; Judy Johnston, research instructor at KU School of Medicine-Wichita; and Mary Beth Miller, MD, chief of staff, Cheyenne County Hospital, all spoke about their own bouts with breast cancer. In Dr. Miller s case, she detected the cancer early but her sister did not and lost her battle with breast cancer. The other panel member, Susan Kang, assistant secretary for policy and external affairs at Kansas Department of Health and Environment, discussed public health trends and statistics as photos by Loree Krier 5

Officials commit to help rural pharmacist shortage A t recent ceremonies to signal the start of expansions to the KU School of Pharmacy on the Lawrence and Wichita campuses, school and government officials addressed the need to help solve the pharmacist shortage in rural parts of the state. Six counties currently have no local pharmacies and 30 counties have just one. The new 110,000-square-foot School of Pharmacy building in Lawrence was funded by legislation authorizing $50 million in bonding authority from the state of Kansas. Approximately $4.5 million will go to an addition for the pharmacy school on the Wichita campus. Kenneth L. Audus, dean of the School of Pharmacy, pointed out that pharmacies provide many services to their community in addition to filling prescriptions. Pharmacists can now offer bone health screening, cholesterol and glucose checks, blood pressure checks and immunizations, he said. In many rural communities in this state, the pharmacist is not only the first point of contact in the health care system but often the only health care professional available. 6 Kansas connections Pharmacists are generally the most acthis new facility and the planned adcessible health care professionals in any dition to our campus in Wichita, the community. 16 Chris Cupp, MD Scott City, Kan. Editor s note: This is the second in a series of articles highlighting a rural health provider. If you know someone who would be an interesting subject, contact Amanda Gardner at agardner@kumc.edu. Even as high school sweethearts in Scott City, Chris and Christine Cupp knew they d like to return to western Kansas to live and raise a family. Small rural towns are not quite the Norman Rockwell pictures they once were, but it s still a great place to raise a family, Chris Cupp, MD, said. We always felt safe growing up and we wanted our kids to feel the same and to grow up in the same environment we did. It was a pretty easy decision, it just made sense. He also always knew he wanted to go to medical school but was not sure about what field of medicine. After graduating summa cum laude from Washburn University with a chemistry degree in 1996, he attended KU School of Medicine - Wichita, where he graduated with an MD degree in He received outstanding resident awards all three years of his family medicine residency. When he finished his residency, there weren t any openings in his hometown, so he took a position at Greeley County Hospital and Cupp, his wife and their three children settled in Tribune Kan. When their hometown needed a doctor in 2004, they moved to Scott City where he became chief of medical staff at Scott County Hospital. Located 60 miles from the Colorado border, 16 Kansas connections I can be a full-spectrum family physician. Chris Cupp, MD Scott City, Kan. the county has a population of 5,000, including both Chris and Christine Cupp s parents. Now the Cupp s three sons Chase, 9, and twins Colton and Connor, 7 not only can grow up around their grandparents, but they can attend first and third grades at the same elementary school their mother did, with some of the same teachers. They re also involved in Boy Scouts, 4-H, recreational football and school activities. Their father also is active, not only in the local community, but in medical organizations. He is president of the Southwest Kansas Medical Society, which focuses on issues facing rural practitioners, and is secretary for the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians. He ll serve as president of the Accademy in three years. I see that as another way to get involved and to get people to head out to western Kansas, Cupp said. Not only does Cupp appreciate the benefits of living in a small town, he s also grateful to live in such a progressive community. In September, Scott County approved a $24 million bond issue to replace the local hospital. It draws patients from surrounding counties because some of their hospitals no longer deliver babies. Scott City has a 20-bed hospital and the only clinic in the county. Construction is expected to begin in the next five months with completion within 18 months. The new facility will include the addition of a nuclear medicine department and a second operating room. Small-town living has both its rewards and challenges, Cupp noted. You re treated with a lot of respect and your thoughts are listened to. But it s a double-edged sword because you can t be anonymous. No matter where you are, including the Continued on next page

Grant expands epilepsy resources Rural Kansas will receive benefits Anew Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) federal service grant will improve resources and access for care in rural Kansas for children diagnosed with epilepsy. Starting Oct. 26, the grant enabled University of Kansas Center for Telemedicine & Telehealth (KUCTT) to team up with pediatric epilepsy experts through KU Medical Center and the Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) to provide training, education and support to rural communities that lack the resources to meet the special needs of children with epilepsy. The grant will allow for expanded and enhanced development and delivery of rural epilepsy programming. KUCTT will adapt additional pediatric epilepsy The HRSA grant will enable the University of Kansas Center for Telemedicine and Telehealth to provide training and education using interactive video delivery. curriculum for its interactive video delivery format and tailor these efforts to rural clinics and schools in Kansas as well as surrounding communities. The three-year program will provide more training in rural pediatric epilepsy care for student health professionals as well as training and programming to approximately 600 health professionals and 300 school personnel. In addition, the program is expected to support over 300 clinical telemedicine consultations. New educational and training materials related to the specific needs of students with epilepsy will be made available to schools. The number of video training opportunities for those who assist children with epilepsy will increase, and there will be greater access to family-centered evaluation and treatment. Newly developed training sessions will be available from the regional AHEC offices this spring. For AHEC educational offerings, go to kumc.edu/. Spotlight continued from PAGe 16 grocery store, you re the doc. Rural doctors probably work more weekends, put in more hours, and see more patients in a day than most urban doctors. They also can perform a wider range of services, according to Cupp. I can be a full-spectrum family physician, he said. I get to do any procedure I feel comfortable doing; I m not limited by the politics of a larger facility. I can be more of an oldfashioned family physician. Cupp also pointed out how practicing in a rural area helps pay for a medical school education. Cupp took advantage of the Kansas Medical Student Loan, which pays off student loans after practicing in a rural area for four years and the Kansas Bridging Plan, which provides community matching funds. What advice would he give to medical students considering a rural practice? It can seem intimidating to practice in a rural area, so I d recommend spending some time there, he said. Come follow us around at our practice. See what life is really like. It s a great opportunity. We need to get more physicians out here. He noted that Scott City needs at least one more doctor, Lakin needs two, and most of the western Kansas communities are in need or soon will be. 17

18 Kansas c o n n e c t i o n s SEARCH provides opportunities Students and clinics benefit during clinic rotations For a decade, the SEARCH (Student/ Resident Experiences and Rotations in Community Health) program has provided placed health care students with Kansas safetyclinics, enabling not only an important clinical rotation experience for students, but also a Community health centers are not only a great place for clinical students, but excellent learning environments for students in the fields of public health, health policy and health care administration. Jason Wesco, COO, Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas valuable resource for community health centers. This year, for the first time, the program was expanded to include graduate administrative students in addition to health care professions. Community health centers are not only a great place for clinical students, but excellent learning environments for students in the fields of public health, health policy and health care administration, said Jason Wesco, chief operations officer for the Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas, which this year has had four SEARCH placements. Two were clinical rotation sites for medical students and the other two were for a PhD student in nursing and a health policy management student. An MBA student also was placed at Health Ministries Clinic in Newton. In addition to benefiting the students and the clinic s patients, the SEARCH program also is appreciated by the staff, many of whom serve as adjunct faculty, preceptors or mentors to the students, according to Wesco. Students bring enthusiasm and a fresh perspective that our staff very much appreciates, he said A total of 23 graduate students -- including medical and dental students and nurse practitioners -- have completed rotations at 13 clinics in Kansas SEARCH program this year. They are placed in medically underserved areas, the majority of which are in rural areas such as the Heart of Kansas Clinic in Great Bend and the Flint Hills Community Health Center in Emporia. The opportunity for administrative placements of MBA and MPH students was made possible this year by funding from the Kansas legislature, according to Mary Beth Warren, statewide director of KUMC s Area Health Education Centers (AHECs). It was a great addition, she said of funding for administrative placements. They were looking to the health care workforce of the future. The SEARCH program, an initiative of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), is coordinated in Kansas by the Kansas Association for Medically Underserved (KAMU) and AHEC. The federal money can be used only for health profession students at the graduate level or above. The program introduces students to underserved populations, Warren said. Safety-net clinics are a little different than traditional clinic settings; they re more interdisciplinary in nature. The AHECs have worked with KAMU for about 10 years by evaluating safety-net clinics for student placements, recruiting students and coordinating their placements. Students are often amazed at the need that s out there, said Erin Scraper, KAMU workforce development specialist, clinical services. They re exposed

to a whole different population than they re used to. It opens their eyes to how safety-net clinics work. KAMU was founded in 1989 to provide training, technical assistance and advocacy on behalf of federally funded community health centers in Kansas. Forty-two organizations, ranging from faith-based clinics to county health departments, are now members of KAMU. They include public and private non-profit organizations that deliver primary health care services regardless of an individual s ability to pay. The program also helps the clinics with both recruitment and retention, according to Scraper. We hope they ll perhaps consider working there, she said. It also helps retention of current staff because they must be adjunct faculty to participate and they enjoy the teaching and mentoring role. Sometimes the rotations which vary in length from two to 10 weeks and occur at different times of the year -- are required parts of academic programs and other times they are elective, said Judy Eyerly, interim director of AHEC-Northwest, who oversees the SEARCH grant. Objectives are agreed on by the academic program, the student and the site. Students often receive academic credit in addition to a small stipend and reimbursement for travel expenses. Placements can be a challenge because the rural clinics are far away from medical schools, Eyerly noted. The participation by administrative students this year was very helpful, according to Eyerly. It s a good way for MPH students to get experience with assessment, data collection and grant writing. She hopes the state-funded program can be extended but realizes the reality of the current budget constraints. Kelly Lang, a dental student at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, said she had a great experience this summer with Dr. Allison Levans while working at the PrairieStar Health Center in Hutchinson. It was nice to get to see the type of people and experiences one gets working in a rural area, she said, adding that a clinical setting was a good motivator and reminder of why she had decided to attend dental school. Sometimes it s hard to remember when you re stuck in a classroom all day learning about biochemistry and cell microbiology. For more information on the SEARCH program, contact Eyerly for an application at jeyerly@kumc.edu or call I was a child of poverty. It always made me feel like a second class citizen to be poor. This clinical experience allowed me to prove to everyone that no one is a second class citizen regardless of their income. There were some of the kindest people that I have ever had the opportunity to provide care to. They were also so appreciative of the care that they received from me. SEARCH participants Honestly, this was one of the coolest experiences I have ever had. I did not know what to expect but I learned so much and enjoyed every minute I had there. I am so thankful I was able to be involved with the SEARCH Program. I feel I will be involved with public dentistry when I first am out on my own. I think it will be the perfect fit for me.
