Submitted by: Kellie Gearlds, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), breast milk is the gold standard for infant nutrition. The AAP recommends that babies receive nothing but breast milk for the first six months of life and breastfeeding should continue until at least one year of age. Breastfeeding has become such an important standard that is has been promoted by the Surgeon General s Call to Action, the Centers for Disease Control, The Joint Commission, American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and Healthy People Breastfeeding research shows significant impact on disease prevention and the overall health of the newborn that also extends into adulthood as well health benefits for the mother. The Joint Commission, which accredits hospitals, has made breastfeeding a core measure that is monitored. Hospitals are now evaluated on not only the initiation breastfeeding rates, but the exclusive breastfeeding rates. The introduction of just one bottle of formula can negatively impact the child s health and reduce the duration of breastfeeding. Therefore, formula is discouraged unless medically necessary. The AAP states that exclusive breastfeeding rates are especially important in the hospital because mothers are 6x more likely to exclusively breastfeed at 8 weeks of age if not supplemented with formula in the hospital. The use of formula in the hospital was the biggest barrier to mothers reaching their breastfeeding goals. Over half of the hospitals that are accredited by Joint Commission have exclusive breastfeeding rates of less than 50%. So, what is the goal or standard? Joint Commission standards are exclusive breastfeeding rates of 75% as the target goal. So, how are we doing at TJ? JANUARY 2016: Initiation rate: 83.8%, exclusive rate: 58.8% FEBRUARY 2016: Initiation rate: 61.4%, exclusive rate: 41.6% MARCH 2016: Initiation rate: 61.4%, exclusive rate: 53.0% APRIL 2016: Initiation rate: 85.7%, exclusive rate: 68.8% Carrie Fisher, Kellie Gearlds & Ashley Blythe Ashley Adamson, Cynthia Brooks & Elizabeth Huber

2 (LACTATION SUCCESS, continued) We support the mother in her choice of feeding; however, as with any medical procedure or treatment, patients should be educated on the risks of formula feeding so they can make an informed decision in their baby s care. In any area of nursing, we must encourage and support evidencebased practice. Just as we would encourage a mother not to smoke for her health and the well being of her child, we know that breastfeeding also has a significant impact on the health of both the mother and baby. Therefore, all mothers should be encouraged to breastfeed. The AAP has recalibrated the national dialogue on breastfeeding deeming it a public health issue and not only a lifestyle choice. As you can see, the Women and Newborn Care department is empowering all mothers to breastfeed, and we continue to encourage them during their hospital stay. The nurses that work with breastfeeding newborns are the mother s biggest cheerleaders. Many hours are spent teaching, encouraging, and offering support at the bedside. All the nurses who care for moms and babies will be taking a breastfeeding class in June to better assist our mothers. We also have a team of nurses who have completed special training in breastfeeding and are certified lactation specialists: Carrie Fisher, Ashley Adamson, Ashley Blythe, and Elizabeth Huber. We have two International Board Certified Lactation Consultants at TJ Samson: Cynthia Brooks who works as a labor and delivery nurse and Kellie Gearlds, who works full-time as a lactation consultant seeing both inpatients as well as outpatients. The Women and Newborn Care department is committed to helping mothers reach their breastfeeding goals. 3 BEFORE NEW SIGNAGE AFTER Outpatient Surgery lettering has been added to the Wound Care entrance to help our patients and guests navigate better while on hospital grounds. We would like to thank the Hospital Interiors and Maintenance Department for their help with this project. winning at losing The Fit For Life Health and Wellness Center recently hosted a program entitled Winning at Losing. This was a FREE 12 week weight management support group for any employee enrolled in the T.J. Anthem medical plan. The format consisted of optional weigh in, recipe sharing, topic of the week, and open forum discussion. The participants attended a weekly meeting and voluntarily weighed in. 8 participants were involved in the first round of our program with the following results achieved: Our biggest loser lost 5.69% body weight, or 11.8 pounds, over the 12-week time period. What is next? The Wellness Center will run a Winning at Losing company-wide weight loss contest during the summer. Participants can enroll as a team, or as individuals. There will be prizes for the top 3 individuals with the most percentage weight loss, and recognition given to the top two teams doing the same. Look for more information coming soon! HEART WALK 2016 Lisa Richardson recently helped T.J. Samson Community Hospital kick off Barren County Heart Walk 2016 with a donation to the American Heart Association. Lisa is presenting a check to Paula Kennedy, Division Director Heart Walk along with members of T.J. Samson s Cardiology Unit and Cardiac Rehabilitation Department. Barren County s Heart Walk will be Saturday, October 22nd at the Beaver Trail Complex. Registration will begin at 8AM with the walk starting at 9AM. Please make plans to join Lisa and T.J.
