5 5 Occupatinal health and safety respnsibility fr students wrking in research grups Undertaking prject wrk/thesis wrk in research grups is cmparable t undertake the prfessinal educatin prgrammes VFU (verksamhetsförlagd utbildning). VFU nrmally takes place within Regin Skåne (r municipal services) and therefre there is a cperatin agreement, which shws that students in the VFU shuld be cnsidered as staff with regard t ccupatinal health and safety. Agreement is needed fr cllabratin with nn-lu rganizatins, but fr activities within the university there is a cllabratin liability withut a cntract. Students participating in research grups are subject t the same rules as emplyees. It is therefre incumbent n the Bard Chairman, wh hlds primary ccupatinal health and safety respnsibilities, that students are trained fr labratry wrk and intrduced t wrk in the lab by researchers as if the students were emplyees. The Bard Chairman has delegated certain ccupatinal health and safety respnsibilities t the prgramme directrs. These require the prgramme directr In cnjunctin with curse crdinatrs t: Ensure teachers and students cmply with all laws, regulatins and prcedures applicable t ccupatinal health and safety. Ensure students and prgramme management meet t review ccupatinal health and safety each semester. Ensure curse crdinatrs instruct students n hw equipment, facilities and ther infrastructure shuld be maintained and perated. Ensure any newly arising health and safety issues that may affect students (f any level), which curse crdinatrs are unable t reslve in accrdance with the actin plan fr ccupatinal health and safety, are reprted t the Bard Chairman. Ensure all accidents, incidents and deviatins are reprted. Ensure any ccupatinal health and safety matters unable t reslve at the prgramme directr level are referred t the Bard Chairman. Ensure ccupatinal health and safety cases are reprted each academic year in the prgramme financial statements. This means that prgramme directrs, in this case (with students in research grups) have a legal respnsibility t ensure curse crdinatrs fr thesis wrk instruct researchers with students perating in their labratries: Students and emplyees have an equivalent right t a safe wrking envirnment; Students must receive sufficient training n ccupatinal health and safety as part f their intrductin t labratry wrk t achieve these cnditins; and In case f any accident r incident, these must be reprted accrding t LU rutine and the curse crdinatr must als be cntacted. It shuld als be acknwledged that despite these precautins and the reductin f risk t health and safety, the pssibility f injury and accident may still remain due t the inherently dangerus nature f the activity. Accrdingly, fr each prject the curse crdinatr shall cnduct a risk assessment. Fr certain types f wrk, the student must underg medical examinatin. Fr ther types f wrk the student shall be ffered such an examinatin. Due t the current absence f agreement between the university and the health care prviders fr s fr students, the supervisr must ffer this thrugh the Occupatinal Health Services and pay fr it with department funding. The Bimedicine Prgramme des nt ffer any financial cmpensatin. Shuld this impede the implementatin f the prject then the prject cannt be implemented. The Bimedicine Prgramme will ffer the student vaccinatin if the wrk invlves risk fr Hepatitis B infectin (the student shuld cntact the educatinal administratr).
