2 PBS Hawaii: Celebrating 50 Years With Songs of Aloha On October 5, 2015, the stars came out to support PBS Hawaii. PBS Hawaii: Celebrating 50 Years With Songs of Aloha reunited a few of the stars who, 15 years ago, brought the music and dance of Hawaii to a national PBS audience through the production, Hawaii Songs of Aloha. Robert and Roland Cazimero, Amy Hānaiali i Gilliom, Aaron Mahi and the producer of the original program, Stephen Reed, shared their recollections of performing and producing Hawaii Songs of Aloha. Betty White, Head of School of Sacred Hearts Academy, was also in our studio to show support of PBS Hawaii with a $12,000 donation. Robert Cazimero snaps a quick photo as Amy Hānaiali i Gilliom talks on the phone with a PBS Hawaii supporter. Leslie Wilcox with Sacred Hearts Academy Head of School Betty White. Robert Cazimero, Roland Cazimero, and Roland s wife, Lauwa e. (l-r) Roland Cazimero, Robert Cazimero, Leslie Wilcox, Amy Hānaiali i Gilliom, Aaron Mahi and Stephen Reed. And we would go fishing. And that s where my love for the ocean started, through fishing, Thompson remembers. Today, Nainoa Thompson is overseeing the Polynesian voyaging canoe, Hokulea, on a voyage around the world to raise awareness about the importance of taking care of our earth.

3 Nainoa Thompson: Navigating Currents on Land As Well as at Sea Leslie Wilcox PBS Hawaii President and CEO There are at least a couple of surprises about Nainoa Thompson s appearance on Long Story Short, coming up on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 pm. Nainoa chose the place for the interview, and it s not within sight of the ocean. It s his family property, upland in Niu Valley, with green fields, spreading kiawe trees and his mom Laura s friendly chickens. And the master navigator and President of the Polynesian Voyaging Society isn t speaking about the ocean, except as a connector to cultures and communities. No, this conversation is about a different kind of wayfinding: on land, in political and diplomatic currents, at far-flung ports of call. For his work in bringing together nations on the Hokulea s ongoing Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage, the East-West Center has named Thompson its 2015 Asia-Pacific Community Builder. Just as he has spent decades observing the skies and seas, Nainoa has been involved for many years with the East-West Center, sharing with and getting to know students from 30 countries. When it came time to prepare for the five-year global voyage, he tapped the Center s deep knowledge. It was through them that we had the ability to build the kind of relationships we needed, whether governmental or community, or cultural, educational and environmental, or even port logistics, he said. Whatever the protocol, he says, the key is knowing how to show respect for others and their home. He said the exchanges on land allow us the opportunity to believe that we re more alike than we re different, that diversity is a strength, and that diversity is a treasure if it is built on respect. And, with a nod to the greenery of the surrounding valley, Nainoa comments that Hawaii is not just a nice place. He believes other nations can see that Hokuleʻa crewmembers are from a seat of power. Because, he says, our amazingly beautiful cultural mix has created a fabric that is based not on race, but on values. I hope you re able to see this episode! Long Story Short also is available online at Aloha a hui hou, Polynesian Voyaging Society/ Oiwi Television Network November 2015 PBS Hawaii 3

4 Alastair Bruce is Coming to Hawaii Sunday, November 29, 2015 at 2 pm Hau Terrace at The Halekulani Hovering just off camera on the set of Downton Abbey is the man who critiques the actors every move. The director? No, it s Alastair Bruce, historical advisor to the hit PBS series and one of Britain s most celebrated experts on royal ceremony and 20th-century protocol. A direct descendant of Robert the Bruce, King of Scots in the early 1300s, Mr. Bruce has spent the past six years making sure every detail of Downton Abbey is exactly as it should be. This includes instructing Downton Abbey s actors how to speak, stand, sit, eat, drink, dress, and keep a stiff upper lip. Alastair is known on set as The Oracle because he knows everything! says Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary. I ve sometimes said to Alastair, Can I lean back in my chair just a little bit, and he said, Absolutely not never in front of your grandmother! When not on set, Mr. Bruce serves as a Herald to Queen Elizabeth II, and is a commentator on royal, religious and national events for Sky News. He also hosted last year s PBS special, The Manners of Downton Abbey, which explored the elaborate code of conduct that governed British life. This month, PBS Hawaii will host Alastair Bruce for Afternoon Tea at The Halekulani. Guests will enjoy a selection of world-class teas, finger sandwiches, and freshly-baked cakes and pastries while Mr. Bruce shares behind-the-scenes details of Downton Abbey. 4 PBS Hawaii November 2015 Tickets have been on sale since October, and very few seats remain. If you are interested in attending, contact Ben Nishimoto, VP Advancement, at bnishimoto@pbshawaii.org

10 Hūʻewa When you hear their name, you can t help but smile. When you hear their music, you re transported to the live Hawaiian music that used to fill the streets of Waikiki. And when you meet the members of Hūʻewa, you hear three young artists who understand and respect their roots. Hu is to hum or to make sound, to make music. And ewa is to go off course or to find your own path, explains Hūʻewa member Kekoa Kane, that s what we do with our music we make music on our own path, on a different style. Even though they re on their own path, the young members of Hūʻewa 17-year-old Kupu Dalire-Naʻauao, 19-year-old Kahi Lum-Young, and 25-year-old Kekoa Kane have respect for their music and their families. Hawaiian music you gotta know the manao behind your songs, explained Lum-Young. Kane adds, I would credit a lot of it to our upbringing, our families, our kupuna, our tutus, the way we were raised. A lot of moolelo, or stories, were Monday, November 23, 7:30pm always shared with us, and especially kauna the hidden meaning behind a lot of the songs. Because we come from strong hula and Hawaiian backgrounds, that was always important to know. In Na Mele: Hūʻewa, the trio s performance includes He Uʻi, Nani Niʻihau, where they re accompanied by the dancers of Hālau Ka Liko Pua O Kalaniakea, and a medley consisting of favorite songs of each member of Hūʻewa: Kaulana Molokaʻi, Pauoa Liko Ka Lehua, and Meleana Ē. Dalire-Naʻauao explains, The Hawaiian music that we chose, the type of songs that we chose we just like to pull things from back in the day. Lum-Young adds, We like to be grounded. Sometimes, you ll see us play barefoot. We ll roll up in our nice shoes and whatever, and you ll see us untying it and flipping it off, and we ll play barefoot we rather feel the stage, we rather feel grounded. And though Hūʻewa kept their shoes on for their Na Mele performance, you ll still feel their strong roots through their music. 10 PBS Hawaii November 2015

14 PARTNER PROFILE First Hawaian Bank Jeff Higashi, Senior Vice President & Area Manager Being a Senior Vice President and Area Manager for First Hawaiian Bank means Jeff Higashi understands investments. A longtime viewer, Jeff shares that the value of PBS Hawaii can be measured by the impact that the station s programs have on a statewide audience of lifelong learners. Even though every child is not afforded the opportunity to attend preschool, through PBS Hawaii, every child can augment their early learning development, explains Jeff. And as viewers get older, programs like HIKI NŌ and NOVA offer an opportunity to think and be informed, whether they are young or young at heart. Jeff explains that PBS Hawaii s mission is not possible without the support of the community, from local businesses sponsoring programs to individual viewers making personal gifts. No matter how great or small, every gift matters and represents an investment in the communities and people of Hawaii. First Hawaiian Bank is proud to be part of creating a bright future. Supporting PBS Hawaii for over 35 years, First Hawaiian Bank currently sponsors the local broadcast of NOVA and Insights on PBS Hawaii.
