2 Sunday, September 24 MERCY DAY Celebrating the 190th Anniversary of the House of Mercy on Baggot Street On this day in 1827, Catherine McAuley, Foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, spent her inheritance to establish the first House Mercy on Baggot Street in Dublin, Ireland offering food, clothing, housing and education to women and girls. The tender mercy of God has given us one another. The Mercy cross was inspired by Catherine McAuley and is used by Sisters of Mercy and Mercy ministries throughout the world. 3 Monday, September 25 Our charity is to be cordial that renews, invigorates and warms. Such should be the effects of our love for each other. NURSING LIGHTING CEREMONY 2:00pm, Alfond Center Gymnasium The Nursing Lighting Ceremony is a tradition at Saint Joseph s College where sophomore nursing students receive a blessing of their hands as they begin caring for patients. Each student lights a candle, symbolic of the lamp carried by Florence Nightingale, a founder of nursing. In partnership with the Department of Nursing MERCY WEEK BONFIRE 9:00pm, Fire Pit at the Fish Bowl Momentum has been building for Mercy Week 2017! Stop by this Bonfire to catch the spirit of Mercy Week and hear about all the events during the Week. A few of this year s t-shirts and Mercy Week memorabilia will be distributed. In partnership with Residence Life MOBILE MERCY TEA 7:30 9:30am, Alfond Hall, 2nd Floor Before her death on November 11, 1841, Catherine McAuley said, Tell the Sisters to get a good cup of tea I think the Community Room would be a good place when I am gone, and to comfort one another, but God will comfort them." The offering of a Mercy Tea remains a tradition across Mercy institutions as an expression of care, compassion, faith and community. Stop by for a cup of tea to-go and some Mercy inspiration at the start of Mercy Week. In Partnership with the President s Office CATHERINE S CUPBOARD 9:00 10:30am, Standish Town Hall, 175 Northeast Road, Rte. 35 Join us for the Monday distribution at Catherine s Cupboard, where we welcome members of our local community who are in need to shop from our food pantry, because we know we can never say it is enough while our friends and neighbors go hungry. 5 SHINING LAMPS WALK TO THE LAKE 7:00pm, Meet in Xavier Hall Lot Catherine McAuley wrote, We should be as shining lamps, giving light to all around us. Enjoy this walk along the lighted path to Sebago Lake with friends and colleagues as we consider how we are shining lamps and light to others. In partnership with Sustainable Enterprises Wednesday, September 27 If we love God, we will undoubtedly love our neighbor also; they are as cause and effect. If the love of God really reigns in your heart, it will quickly show itself in the exterior. POSTGRADUATE SERVICE/VOLUNTEER PROGRAM FAIR 11:00am 1:00pm, Pearson s Café/Lobby This is a great opportunity to learn more about service and volunteer programs available after graduation. All students are welcome. Come meet staff from various postgraduate service and volunteer programs, including the Mercy Volunteer Corps. In partnership with Mercy Center The Sisters of Mercy were founded out of deep concern for persons who are poor and those in need. Today, that commitment is focused in five Mercy Critical Concerns.
