Major support of the station comes from the people and businesses of Hawaii. On the Cover As 2012 comes to a close, it s time to look forward to what 2013 has in store: Downton Abbey Season 3, Pure Caz and Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings provide an exciting start to a great new year. See pages 4-5. Leslie Wilcox President and CEO, PBS Hawaii I was walking in downtown Honolulu the other day, and a young couple whom I didn t know on the corner across the street hollered over the sound of traffic: EXCUSE ME! Oh, hello...when is it starting again? It s coming up soon, right? What is it? I knew right away. Because I get asked about it quite a bit. Downton Abbey on Masterpiece Leslie Wilcox The first two seasons of this period drama set in a fictional country estate in Yorkshire have been a runaway hit with young and old, drawing audiences that commercial broadcasters and cable television systems envy. PBS Hawaii is an alternative television station, with the mission of learning and discovery not attracting eyeballs, as our commercial colleagues describe it. The popularity of the series has surprised and fascinated us. PBS is responsible for many fine programs from across America, but it s this British import that has captured viewers across the board. Yes, men have been avid watchers too. A Honolulu bank executive who grew up in the United Kingdom says the series is pitch perfect. Other men have told me they became hooked by the episodes about sons going off to fight in the Great War, the effects of the war at home, and the interaction between lords of the manor and servants. The answer to the it question is: Sunday, January 6. PBS Hawaii is your source for Downton Abbey Season 3, and we ll air episodes at 8:00 pm every Sunday for seven weeks. Get a running start on the new season by refreshing your memory of Season 2 starting December 2, we ll encore those episodes Sunday nights at 8:00 pm. The law firm Carlsmith Ball and First Insurance Company of Hawaii are among local businesses working with us to present Downton Abbey Season 3 in Hawaii. PBS Hawaii s viewers want strong local programming as well as excellent national and international selections. This mix of shows is the reason a retired Neighbor Island educator sent a generous gift to our NEW HOME Campaign last month. She wrote that she s excited by the positive impact of the HIKI N Ō student newscast, and she described spending the night of the recent Canadian tsunami watching the 25thanniversary presentation of Les Misérables. Spectacular, she noted. And she added:

3 PBS Hawaii Management President and CEO Leslie Wilcox Senior Vice President/CFO Karen Yamamoto VP Creative Services Robert Pennybacker VP Programming and Communications Roberta Wong Murray VP Advancement Ben Nishimoto PBS Hawaii Board of Directors Shirley MacLaine guest stars as Martha Levinson in Downton Abbey Season 3 Do not send any gifts. My enjoyment of the PBS programs is the best gift I could receive. We present the nation s best keiki educational shows, as well as arts, culture, science, history, food, and of course, news and civil discourse. Our hope is that you ll make us your home for viewing that nourishes you and that every once in a while, as you watch PBS Hawaii, you ll stumble across something you didn t realize you d enjoy. A pleasant surprise, a discovery. Such as, perhaps, Downton Abbey Season 3. The couple in downtown Honolulu crossed the street and we chatted. Go figure, the young man said. Somehow I m a fan of this Brit show that s a high-flown soap opera. What s next? Well, prepare to see Shirley MacLaine, Academy Award -winning American actress (Terms of Endearment) make an entrance in Downton Abbey Season 3... and keep watching PBS Hawaii for a great new year of diverse programming! 4 C elebration and nticipation A As 2012 comes to a close, it s time to look ahead to what 2013 has in store. The comeback of a hit masterpiece, a special featuring legendary Hawaiian music siblings and a documentary on a local ukulele superstar are just three highlights coming up on PBS Hawaii. JANUARY» DOWNTON ABBEY SEASON 3 Scandal. Intrigue. Drama. The highly anticipated third season of Downton Abbey on Masterpiece begins January 6. In this season premiere, a long-awaited engagement is on and the Great War has ended. All is not tranquil at Downton Abbey, though, as social change, romance and crises continue to grip the English estate. This season, Academy Award winner Shirley MacLaine guest stars as Martha Levinson, the American mother of Cora, Countess of Grantham, portrayed by Elizabeth McGovern. McGovern, Hugh Bonneville, Dame Maggie Smith and a host of others are among the returning cast members. 4 December 2012 PBSHawaii.org

5 PBS Hawaii, in partnership with Iolani Palace, will host a celebration of the season three premiere of Downton Abbey Season 3. An advance screening of the first episode will be held at Halekoa, the barracks at Iolani Palace, on the evening of January 4. More details will be published in the next issue of PBS Hawaii magazine. What a rollercoaster it has been to be part of this truly global phenomenon, said executive producer Gareth Neame. We couldn t be more thrilled by the way Abbey critics and audiences have taken Downton to their hearts and I m so excited to be getting the third season ready for everyone to see. Mahalo to Carlsmith Ball LLP and First Insurance Company of Hawaii for supporting local broadcasts of Downton Abbey Season 3! FEBRUARY» PURE CAZ Robert and Roland Cazimero, best known as The Brothers Cazimero, return to PBS Hawaii in February in their very own music special, Na Mele Pure Caz. The show features the brothers performing their definitive collection of music in a backstage setting. The music special will be a part of PBS Hawaii s NEW HOME Campaign, the grassroots fundraising campaign to construct and equip the station s new building on Nimitz Highway in Honolulu. We love opportunities to perform for local audiences, Robert and Roland said in a statement. So when producer Robert Pennybacker called and asked if we would consider putting together a special show for PBS Hawaii, we jumped at the chance. Working with the amazing production talent at PBS Hawaii has always been a sheer delight. We had a ton of fun putting this show together and we think it s reflected in the final show. MARCH» JAKE SHIMABUKURO: LIFE ON FOUR STRINGS PBS Hawaii will feature another local music star in spring Jake Shimabukuro: Life On Four Strings makes its broadcast television debut on PBS Hawaii in March. Through interviews, home video and family photos, the documentary tracks the ukulele master s rise to international fame. Cameras also follow Jake on a whirlwind tour throughout the U.S. and Japan not just at arena shows, but also during visits to elementary schools, senior care centers and the tsunami-ravaged town of Sendai. Despite stardom, a hectic lifestyle and his virtuoso status, Jake s charm and humility shine through. PBS Hawaii, along with Pacific Islanders in Communications, presented a screening of Life on Four Strings at the Hawaii International Film Festival in October. After the screening at Hawaii Theatre Center, Jake himself came onstage, talked to the audience and performed several songs. Later, guests celebrated the film with Jake at a special reception across the street at Brasserie du Vin. The documentary was a joint production of the Center for Asian American Media and Pacific Islanders in Communications, with support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Celebrate and anticipate another year of special shows with PBS Hawaii! The beauty and grace of Sky Gora's performance provides a perfect complement to the music of Robert and Roland Cazimero in Na Mele Pure Caz. PBSHawaii.org December

6 PARTNER PROFILE Cronin Fried Sekiya Kekina & Fairbanks L. Richard Fried Jr., Founding Member For the past four years, Cronin Fried Sekiya Kekina & Fairbanks has been a strong supporter of PBS Hawaii s commitment to airing nonpartisan, independent news programming. The local law firm sponsors PBS NewsHour, NHK Newsline and NHK World. In this age of partisan commercial news-style broadcasting, it s essential that the public retain a trusted source for news and investigative journalism, said the firm s founding member, Richard Fried. That source is PBS Hawaii. They fill a void. L. Richard Fried Jr. This election season, PBS NewsHour s much-revered duo of political analysts Mark Shields and David Brooks framed the public debate on issues affecting the electorate. Journalists and anchors Judy Woodruff and Gwen Ifill guided their guests in civil discourse and gave equal attention to both parties and all views a service that cable news stations often promise, but fail to deliver. We support PBS Hawaii, and the news programming specifically, because public television maintains its independence and integrity only if it s funded by the public to serve the broader public interest, said Fried. Advertisers and political agendas don t drive our content; we re independent and locally owned. Community support for PBS Hawaii ensures our quality and objectivity. Mahalo to Cronin Fried Sekiya Kekina & Fairbanks for its longtime support of public television in Hawaii. Making the Grade with Big Bird and Sesame Street More than 75 million Americans grew up watching Big Bird on Sesame Street. And today, children in over 150 countries also have that opportunity. Research by Sesame Workshop has found that children who watched Sesame Street were more prepared for school and had 16% higher grade point averages throughout high school. Big Bird delivers. PBS Hawaii is Big Bird s island home. But we can t do it without you. Your support brings the wonderful world of Sesame Street to Hawaii s keiki, giving them a safe place to live and learn. If you, your business, or your foundation would like to support the local broadcast of Sesame Street, please contact PBS Hawaii s Vice President of Advancement, Ben Nishimoto, at bnishimoto@ pbshawaii.org or call (808) December 2012 PBSHawaii.org

Following welcome remarks by PBS Hawaii President and CEO Leslie Wilcox, HIKI N ŌŌManaging Editor Susan Yim and Editor/Associate Producer Lawrence Pacheco walked educators and education technology experts in the audience through the HIKI N Ō production process, explaining how students learn visual storytelling skills by re-doing. Then they played a video presentation by HIKI N Ō Executive Producer Robert Pennybacker reviewing two case studies of stories that went through several drafts before being accepted for air. One was a story about electronics in the classroom by students at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School on Kauai. The other was a story by students at Kealakehe High School on Hawaii Island about a mysterious looking building in Kona. HIKI N Ō teachers Kevin Matsunaga (Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School), Luane Higuchi (Waianae Intermediate), Donn Yamamoto (Waiakea High School) and Jennifer Suzuki (Waianae High School) also gave the audience first-hand accounts of their experience with HIKI N Ō. 8 The Tradition of Giving Goes a Long Way Hawaii Chapters of Alpha Delta Kappa Exemplify the Spirit of Giving Members of the Hawaii Chapters of Alpha Delta Kappa (AΔK) have made a year-round tradition of gathering every other Wednesday at PBS Hawaii to volunteer their time. They arrive with cheerful greetings and work diligently, enjoying one another products/clarevflatpewter1.jpg s company while performing tasks that stretch the resources of a small staff. We look forward to these visits from the AΔK ladies, not only for their work, but also for the sweet treats they bring. Volunteer Sharon Holaday is especially known for her baking skills and generously shares her creations with us. This time of year inspires Sharon to participate in holiday traditions, including giving to those less fortunate and gathering family and friends to enjoy wonderful food, fun and the joy and comfort of being with those you love. She adds, PBS Hawaii does such an important job that I want to be a part of it, however small. I love working with the talented and dedicated staff and doing the tasks that free them to continue striving to make it even better. The Hawaii Eta Chapter of AΔK volunteered more than 28,000 hours of service and donated over $96,000 to various organizations that included PBS Hawaii. AΔK is an international honorary organization for women educators. A major part of its mission is dedicated to altruistic projects. Last year, AΔK chapters in America, Canada, Jamaica, Mexico and Puerto Rico gave over two million hours of service and donated over $14 million to charities worldwide. In Hawaii, the Alpha, Eta, Fidelus, Beta and Theta Chapters give back to PBS Hawaii with valuable volunteer hours and annual group donations. The Hawaii Theta Chapter chooses to donate to PBS Hawaii for its educational programming that reaches hundreds of children, explains Theta sister Julie Shimonishi. In the spirit of the season, Shimonishi and fellow sorority members volunteer for well-known statewide holiday ventures, including the PBS Hawaii Keiki Club Costume Party. By making it their practice to support nonprofits, AΔK shows by example the value of giving back to the community in which we live. Happy Holidays to Alpha Delta Kappa Hawaii and all of PBS Hawaii s supporters. Mahalo for making it your holiday tradition to come together and extend your philanthropic Front row (l-r): Sumako Kumabe, Aileen Tom, Juliette Ling, Margo Okoji, Genny Yee, Janet Look, and Elsie Tanaka Back row (l-r): Betty Yoshida, Susan Nakamura, Gail Watanabe, Anne Hedani, Carol Kuroda, Linda Shimamoto, Julie Shimonishi, PBS Hawaii Board member Jean Kiyabu, June Watanabe, Norma Izumi, Patricia Takamiya, Geri Tanoue, Myrna Sugiyama, Sharon Holaday and Lorraine Noda. 8 December 2012 PBSHawaii.org

9 A Simple Way to Double Your Support Matching Gifts Through Your Employer A s Lea Iwamoto mailed in her check to PBS Hawaii, she remembered to use Hawaiian Electric Company s matching gift form to double her impact on the community. It s simple to do we just fill out a form, send it to the organization, and they pretty much take care of it from there, Lea said. She has supported numerous charities through HECO s matching gift program, but this is the first time she s given to PBS Hawaii. It s simple to do we just fill out a form, send it to the organization, and they pretty much take care of it from there. Lea Iwamoto HECO employee Ever since Leslie Wilcox took over, PBS Hawaii has risen to a different level. That s what pushed me to donate this year. It made me realize how much more I watch KHET. Lea enjoys watching the Masterpiece series and cooking shows, such as America s Test Kitchen. She supports public television because it offers a clean alternative to cable. You don t have to be constantly exposed to violence and other inappropriate language that is starting to be prevalent on regular stations. PBS Hawaii offers a lot of educational programs. Please support the community with a tax-deductible gift to PBS Hawaii before the new year. Make your donation go further with a matching gift by contacting your company s human resources department. For questions on matching gifts, please call (808) or visit PBSHawaii.org. A Family Favorite Recipe Shared by AΔK volunteer Sharon Holaday My family's favorite treat is Cowboy Cookies. I have seen this recipe in various places and under different names including Ranger Cookies. The only changes I have made are to add the walnuts and refrigerate the dough before baking. The cold dough does not spread out as thinly while baking resulting in a thicker cookie. COWBOY COOKIES 1 cup butter (2 sticks) ½ cup sugar 1 ½ cup brown sugar 2 eggs 1 ½ teaspoon vanilla 2 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 2 cups rolled oats 1 cup flaked coconut 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (12 oz. bag) 1 cup walnut pieces Cream together the butter and sugars. Add the eggs and vanilla and mix. In another bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda and salt. Add it to the butter mixture and stir. Add remaining ingredients and mix. It will be hard to stir now. Refrigerate for 2 hours or overnight. Drop by generous teaspoonfuls on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for minutes. They should look soft and brown around the edges. Makes about 3 dozen.
