2 Peg + Cat made a guest appearance at Mililani Town Association s KEIKI-CON on November 7. Kids posed for photos with the PBS KIDS duo, and participated in free art activities run by our staff and volunteers. PBS Hawaii Board member Jean Kiyabu (pictured, upper right corner) was also there to help. More than 100 Downton Abbey fans and station supporters attended an at-capacity afternoon tea event at the Halekulani on November 29. (The hotel donated its space and tea service.) After tea and dessert, Downton Abbey historical advisor Alastair Bruce spoke about the time period portrayed on the show and shared stories from the set. See page 4 for more info on Downton Abbey Season 6. 2 PBS Hawaii January 2016

3 Jimmy Borges: Faced It All It s an intimate, one-of-a-kind concert. Leslie Wilcox PBS Hawaii President and CEO Jimmy Borges, one of Hawaii s most beloved performers, tells a small studio audience of hand-picked friends that he s in the process of learning how to die. I invite you to tune in and watch this concert and the man who shines through the music, in the show s premiere on Thursday, January 21, at 8:00 pm on PBS Hawaii. The title, Jimmy Borges: Faced It All, comes from a phrase in the song My Way. Jimmy speaks to his friends matter-of -factly, from the heart: My cancer is back. And this time, it s not planning to leave. But tonight, or any night, is not about poor Jimmy. Tonight is about me having a wonderful life, sharing my music. And tonight is about someone out there whose life is going to be affected by what we re doing here tonight. By someone out there, Jimmy has in mind a Hawaii high school graduate with financial needs who will benefit from the brand-new Jimmy Borges Vocal Music Scholarship fund at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His friends in the audience established this perpetual fund in his honor. Leading whirlwind fundraising were cancer survivor and retired Hawaiian Electric Industries (HEI) CEO Robert Clarke and Matson Chairman and former First Hawaiian Bank CEO and Chairman Walter A. Dods. Jr. They raised $300,000 in less than a month. Taped last December 3, in PBS Hawaii s studio, the concert marked Jimmy s first public disclosure of the recurrence of liver cancer which has spread to his lungs. We at PBS Hawaii are honored to present this gift of a program from a former PBS Hawaii Board member and favorite son of Hawaii, who assures us, I m here living the life I chose to live. I ve got the best musicians, and each song we re doing tonight is a song seen through the prism of my life. So let s cook. Thursday, January 21 at 8:00 pm Actor Jim Nabors, 85, has a moment with Jimmy during a pre-concert audio check. January 2016 PBS Hawaii 3

4 The Beginning of the End for Downton Abbey The sixth and final season of the hit Masterpiece series premieres January 3 at 8:00 pm on PBS Hawaii. The top-rated PBS drama of all time nears its climactic chapter. The sixth and final season of Downton Abbey on Masterpiece premieres Sunday, January 3 at 8:00 pm. Soon, viewers will find out where fate, passion, ambition and duty will take the program s beloved characters. Will Carson and Mrs. Hughes make it down the aisle? Will Branson find happiness in America? Will Mary snap up the affections of the snappy chariot driver? Making their bittersweet farewell are members of the beloved cast, including Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Carter, Joanne Froggatt, Phyllis Logan, Laura Carmichael, Brendan Coyle, Lesley Nicol and Allen Leech. We wanted to close the doors of Downton Abbey when it felt right and natural for the storylines to come together and when the show was still being enjoyed so much by its fans, said Gareth Neame, an executive producer on the show. Hawaii has no shortage of fans. Over Thanksgiving weekend, more than 100 fans attended afternoon tea at the Halekulani Hotel with Downton Abbey s historical advisor, Alastair Bruce. Tickets to this event sold out almost instantly. Alastair gave a lively and informative presentation about life during the era portrayed on Downton Abbey and of life behind the scenes of the show. Fashion designer Anne Namba was also on hand to sell her handmade, Downton Abbey-inspired headpieces; proceeds benefitted PBS Hawaii. And last month, about 200 fans lined up to watch an advanced screening of the season premiere at Ward Consolidated Theatres. The audience cheered for their favorite fan-made costumes during a prescreening contest, and winners walked away with an assortment of Downton Abbey prizes. 4 PBS Hawaii January 2016

If you followed Hawaii politics in the 60s, 70s and 80s, you may know Guy s father, the late Duke Kawasaki, who served as a Hawaii state senator. You may have read one of the 13 books that Guy Kawasaki has authored, with topics ranging from social media to business startups to the art of changing hearts, minds, and actions. In September 2015, while he was in Hawaii for his father s funeral, Guy sat down with Leslie Wilcox for a taping of Long Story Short. He talked about 60-hour work weeks at Apple. And that might have been low, Guy says. But you know what? We were on a cause, right? We were on a mission from God. I think everybody from Hawaii, every student, if they can afford it and if the situation works out, they should go to school on the mainland, too, Guy says. It is an eye-opening experience. And it increases your perspective, it increases your horizons, it increases your expectations for life. And I think that if you only stay in one place, you judge things, you judge yourself in only one context. And that s not enough. Guy continues: You could start a company. You don t have to go work for just a hotel or just for a store in Ala Moana Center. So that opened my eyes.
