2 Intergenerational Bonding Benefits All Leslie Wilcox PBS Hawaii President and CEO At PBS Hawaii, we are seeing an inspiring reciprocity between generations. We witness it every week as HIKI N Ō teachers, mentors and students freely share skills and sensibilities; we saw it at recent HIKI N Ō theater screenings on four islands, as prominent business leaders and industry Momi Bee Kahawaiola a professionals showed up to talk with students and support schools expertise in storytelling; and we enjoyed it during last month s Na Mele Moments pledge-ofsupport drive, with a theme of looking to the past to navigate our future. During the Na Mele Moments program, 88-year-old Princess Abigail Kinoiki Kekaulike Kaw ānanakoa spontaneously called in to say how touched she was by both the archival music clips and by young people playing music in the real old style. Children, grandchildren and a great-grandchild of late, great Hawaiian musical artists Genoa Keawe and Dennis Kamakahi perpetuate their loved ones music while being true to themselves. P ōmaika i Lyman, Aunty Genoa s granddaughter, marvels that by example, Tutu set the bar high in many ways starting with that almost impossibly long note in her PBS Hawaii Management President and CEO Leslie Wilcox Senior Vice President/CFO Karen Yamamoto VP Creative Services Roy Kimura VP Advancement Ben Nishimoto Executive Producer Learning Initiatives Robert Pennybacker Chief Engineer John Nakahira 2 PBS Hawaii October 2014 PBS Hawaii Board of Directors Chair Robert Alm Vice Chair Marissa Sandblom Secretary Bettina Mehnert Treasurer Kent Tsukamoto Susan Bendon Carolyn Berry Wilson Keola Donaghy Matthew Emerson Jodi Endo Chai Joanne Lo Grimes Gayle Harimoto Ken Hiraki Charlyn Honda Masini Kawika Kahiapo Noelani Kalipi Darren Kimura Ian Kitajima Jean Kiyabu Joy Miura Koerte Kamani Kuala au Mary Ann Manahan David McEwan, M.D. Cameron Nekota Aaron Salā Ka iulani Sodaro Candy Suiso Bruce Voss PBS Hawaii Program Guide Editor Liberty Peralta Design/Photo Editor Bryan Bosworth Contributing Writers Roy Kimura Ben Nishimoto Liberty Peralta Program Listings John Kovacich Jill Matsumoto Administrative Assistant Meriel Collins Communications Assistant Emily Bodfish On the Cover Author Steven Johnson, in front of the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility atop Mauna Kea. Meanwhile, a big, active ohana kept Aunty Genoa engaged and exposed to new ways. Our Board of Directors, who staffed the phone bank during Na Mele Moments, has multiple generations represented with a significant number of younger members than ever before. The Directors, from different islands and different backgrounds, may have differing perspectives but they agree on core values, and the need to respect each other and work together. They have a synergy that M ālie Lyman works. This baby boomer from the days of the generation gap believes society benefits from intergenerational connecting and bonding, and I love seeing it happen close at hand. A hui hou until next time, Family members from different generations were proud to support their children s storytelling work, like the family of Kamehameha Schools Maui student Jaylyn Nobriga (pictured, left). They attended the HIKI N Ō Festival screening at Consolidated Kaahumanu 6 in Kahului last month. October 2014 PBS Hawaii 3

7 Paul Olding How We Got to Now with Steven Johnson Best-selling author Steven Johnson hosts How We Got to Now, a new series premiering on PBS Hawaii Wednesday, October 15 at 9:00 pm. The series features stories behind remarkable ideas that make modern life possible, the unsung heroes behind these ideas and the unexpected and bizarre consequences each of these innovations triggered. On the episode Glass, which airs Wednesday, October 22 at 10:00 pm, Johnson visits the W.M. Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea s summit to showcase what he calls the pinnacle of the extension of human vision the world s largest pair of optical telescopes, giving astronomers a window into outer space. UPCOMING EPISODES Clean Wednesday, October 15 9:00 pm Learn how clean water has changed our world and the way we live our lives. Time Wednesday, October 15 10:00 pm Discover how time advanced navigation, technology, travel and the way we work. PBS Hawaii: How crucial was your visit to the W.M. Keck Observatory? STEVEN JOHNSON: The visit to Keck is one of the central sequences in the Glass episode, and in fact it s one of my favorite sequences in the whole series. We wanted to show how far we had extended our vision into space and back in time thanks to the technologies of glass, and Keck is the perfect site to showcase that progress. PBSH: What were your first impressions of the Mauna Kea site? SJ: It really looks like you are on another planet: the lack of vegetation, the red rocks, the altitude so high above the cloud layer. My first thought is that it s appropriate that this is the best place on Earth to gaze into other worlds it actually looks like it belongs to another world! PBSH: Were there any challenges while shooting the Mauna Kea segment? SJ: You re always battling the altitude there; we had one crew member who had to go on oxygen, and didn t make it back up to the summit for the second day of shooting. When I watch the sequences now, I can see how out of breath I am. It was literally breathtaking up there. PBSH: What is one takeaway you d like viewers to get from How We Got To Now? SJ: I think it s a sense of optimism about how much progress we ve made solving important problems over the last few centuries, and learning about our place in the universe thanks to innovations like the telescope. Glass Wednesday, October 22 10:00 pm Uncover the link between art, science and global communication: glass. Light Wednesday, October 29 10:00 pm Explore how light has altered sleeping patterns, architecture and more. Cold Wednesday, November 5 10:00 pm Examine the effects of man s mastery of cold on food, Hollywood and more. Sound Wednesday, November 12 10:00 pm Witness the impact of sound in the world of medicine and in our lives today. October 2014 PBS Hawaii 7

COMMUNITY PARTNERS First Hawaiian Bank Jeff Higashi Update F or over 34 years, First Hawaiian Bank has been a supporter of PBS Hawaii programming and currently sponsors Leahey & Leahey and Insights on PBS Hawaii. Jeff Higashi, Senior Vice President and Area Manager, explains why it is important for First Hawaiian Bank to support locally produced programs. As a large institution, we wanted to demonstrate that First Hawaiian Bank is still first and foremost a community bank, Jeff says. Local programs engage, inform and create discussion on issues that matter to the Islands. We care about the uniqueness that is Hawaii and by supporting local productions, we ve created a better connection to the community we serve. As a longtime viewer, Jeff recalls fond memories of growing up on PBS Kids programs, an experience that many employees share. Almost all of us have a connection to PBS Hawaii, Jeff says. We see our kids watching the same programs we grew up on, and as employees, it s great to see our organization share and support the same values that we do. Mahalo a nui loa to First Hawaiian Bank for your business support.
