1 Spring-Summer 2017 A publication of the New Hope Parks and Recreation Department Youth/Teen Playground Pals Playground Pals is designed for youth ages 4-6 (must be 4 by September 1). The activities, led by fun, outgoing staff, will center around a theme and will include arts and crafts, games, singing, and playing with other playground pals! Themes will include: Spotlight on You; Under the Sea; Up, Up and Away; Holiday Hoopla; It s a Jungle Out There; and Silly Sports Challenge. Join us for the fun! A maximum of 12 and a minimum of six children may register per class. The activities each week will center around a theme and will include sports and games, arts and crafts and much more. The staff is fun, outgoing and want to have a great time too! Themes will include: Fun Factor, Invention Convention, Island Escapades, Mysterious Moats and More, Searching for the Jurrasic, and Undercover. Come ready to have fun! A maximum of 40 and a minimum of 10 children may register per class. 3 Youth/Teen Baseball New Hope Park and Recreation baseball programs are a positive introduction to baseball for your child. Programs will focus on fun, fitness and the fundamentals all key to growing a child s love for the game. Each team needs two coaches. An orientation will be scheduled for early June that provides program information and helpful coaching tips provided by the Minnesota Twins. Coaches children receive a free registration (payment is due at time of registration and refunded after the season is complete). If interested, contact Sarah Hansen at or shansen@ci.new-hope.mn.us. The leagues consist of practices and games. Participants will receive their team information on June 8. Based on number of teams, some practices may be held at Liberty or Little Acre parks. Program fee includes a hat and shirt. Players should bring a glove and water bottle. Save the date! Picture night is Monday, June 26 at Civic Center Park. Register by May 19 and save $5! T-Ball One Learn the rules of baseball in this fun league for ages 4-5. Hit off of a tee and develop skills such as throwing, catching, base running and fielding. Practice your skills, then try them out during games. 4 Youth/Teen Junior Golf Lessons Learn the fun and exciting game of golf! Youth ages 5-12 will learn the basic skills, fundamentals and etiquette of golf. Instruction is presented in a non-competitive environment, with a creative approach to learning. Golf clubs are provided. Boys and girls of all skill levels between the ages of 8 and 15 can participate in this 10-week league. This league focuses on recreation, learning and fun! The league features weekly instruction with events and prizes. There will be a pizza party on the last league day. Instruction will be held at 11 a.m. each week, followed by golf. And, we offer the best deal around unlimited golf all season for $175! 6 Youth/Teen Revolutionary Sports Basketball This program, for youth ages 5-12, will help players develop their dribbling, passing and basketball shooting skills. Focus will also be on individual player development relative to their experience. Classes are open to all ability levels and run by Revolutionary Sports coaches. SkillStars, for youth ages 9-12, focuses on individual player development based on their experience level. Classes are open to all ability levels and run by Revolutionary Sports coaches. 7 Flag Football RevSports Instructional Program (ages 4-8) This program will focus on individual player development as participants learn the skills and rules of the game. They will also play very low key games. No special equipment needed. This program is run by Revolutionary Sports staff. Youth from New Hope, Crystal, Golden Valley, Robbinsdale and St. Louis Park receive resident rate. 9 Teen Tennis League This league is designed for boys and girls ages Players must have previous tennis experience and be able to sustain a rally with forehand and backhand, return serves and keep score. Matches will be played against players of similar ability and may be played in Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Crystal, Golden Valley, New Hope and Plymouth. Players are responsible for their own transportation. Fee includes league membership and t-shirt. Practice will begin on Monday, June 12. 11 Gymnastics Level Definitions Beginner: Little or no gymnastics experience. Intermediate: For those who have mastered hands on/feet on (vault); Pullover and back hip circle (bars); All walks and some jumps with correct technique (beam); Perfect cartwheel, roundoff, handstand, forward roll (floor). Advanced: For those who have mastered hands on, feet on, handstand off (vault); Long hang pullover (bars); Forward roll, front handspring dismount (beam); Back walkover (floor). Advanced 2: For those who have mastered front handspring (vault); Fly-away, kip on low bar (bars); Back walkover, hands-free dismount (beam); Roundoff to back handspring (floor). Dance Class Here is your chance to try a dance class! These classes are designed for new students or beginners. Instructor Melissa Guse will teach basic tap and ballet skills. 45 Northwood Park Celebration is May 15 The city of New Hope is holding a celebration at Northwood Park on Monday, May 15 from 5 to 6 p.m. to introduce residents to improvements made to the park last summer and fall. The most visible park improvement is the new playground equipment. This new equipment includes a large assortment of climbing components, swings, slides and a dual zip-line. There is a separate play area with equipment for younger kids, as well as a sand area. Other improvements to the play area include four picnic tables with shade structures, and engineered wood fiber material which replaced the sand in the play container. This project also included an expanded loop trail around the park. Additional park benches and signage will be added this spring. The celebration will include a ribbon cutting at approximately 5:30 p.m. and refreshments. Everyone is welcome! The Northwood Park Playground is located at 3815 Boone Ave N, on the west side of the park. Gift Certificates Available Looking for a gift for someone special but don t know what to get? New Hope has seasonal dog parks in three city parks for just that purpose. New Hope has off-leash dog areas in Civic Center Park (44th and Xylon), Lions Park (38th and Oregon), and Liberty Park (60th and Gettysburg). The off-leash areas are located in the hockey enclosures at each park. The dog parks are free and may be used during daylight hours only. Pet owners are responsible for controlling and picking up after their dogs. Dogs must remain on-leash until they enter the dog park enclosure. Read all of the rules posted at the dog park entrance.
