1 Thank you for your interest in SummerQuest 2017! SummerQuest provides students of all ages an opportunity to engage in programs focusing on academics, athletics, and the arts. We are thrilled to offer a variety of courses and camps to fill your summer with growth, enrichment, and fun! At SummerQuest, we are always growing and improving, so be certain to check out the many new courses that have been added to our catalog. We hope you will be a part of SummerQuest 2017, as there are many unique opportunities for children to enhance their God-given abilities and learn new skills. The First Academy is conveniently located just off of Interstate 4 and John Young Parkway on the campus of First Baptist Church of Orlando. SummerQuest faculty includes experienced educators, professional instructors, and talented coaches who work together to provide a memorable experience for all participants. 3 General Information REGISTRATION SummerQuest offers online registration and payment. Please visit our website at to register for courses. After registering online, all participants must also complete our medical information form online, send it in via mail, or bring to campus by the first day of camp. This form requires a parent signature and is found on the next page of this brochure. Please return the medical form to: The First Academy 2667 Bruton Blvd. Orlando, FL Attn: SummerQuest Deadline for online registration is Friday, May 19, 2017 at 3:00pm. Any registration received after May 19th will be charged a $10 late fee. COURSE FEE The course fee must be paid in full to reserve your spot in the course. After paying online, please fill out the medical form that is located online on the registration page. REFUND POLICY The student will receive a full refund minus expenses incurred (T-shirt, etc.) if withdrawing from a program before Friday, May 19, No refunds will be made after this date. If a student is asked to leave the course or camp for disciplinary reasons, no refund will be given. We understand that unforeseen circumstances do arise. However, in order to staff our camps and to ensure the camp programs offered are available to those who registered, there are no exceptions. CANCELLATION & WITHDRAWAL The First Academy reserves the right to cancel any program if there is insufficient enrollment. The designated participation minimum is listed under each course description. All fees will be refunded in the event that the course minimum is not met. This application is made with the understanding that The First Academy reserves the right to request withdrawal of any student whose conduct, influence, attendance, or progress is regarded as undesirable or unsatisfactory, or who fails to conform to rules and regulations. No refund will be made to any student who withdraws or is dismissed from SummerQuest after the program has begun. DRESS CODE The dress code for SummerQuest is casual but conservative. For sports camps please wear proper athletic clothes and footwear. Uniforms are not required during the summer. 5 Adaptive Sports Camp The Sports Hangout "The Sports Hangout" at TFA provides a fun, safe, and encouraging atmosphere for students with special needs to work on motor skills. "The Sports Hangout" welcomes students who enjoy sports and would like to improve their skills. We strive to not only help students improve sports skills but to provide a setting that promotes the building of social skills and provides opportunities to make new friends. The program will focus on sports skills each day (throwing, catching, kicking, etc.). These skills will be taught through fun interactive games. What to bring: comfortable athletic apparel, tennis shoes, a water bottle, a small snack, and lots of energy. 8 Lower School Course Descriptions Academic Camps K4-Story Stretcher: Rainbow Fish Join us for an adventurous week of water play, special cooking activity, and arts and crafts. We will be patterning, sequencing, counting, and "reading" color words. We will be getting ready for K-Prep by learning classroom routines and will even take a tour of the Lower Bchool building (Clinic, Art, Music, and Spanish rooms). The kids will build their fine motor skills by using scissors, painting, and shaping play dough into sea creatures. We will take a "field trip" to the beach without even leaving the classroom. The kids will have fun "fishing," collecting shells, and making sand castles. Minimum class size is 6 students. This one-week class is designed for students entering First Grade at TFA. It will help students boost confidence and skills prior to the start of school. Using literature as a springboard, we will refresh reading, writing, and math skills learned in Kindergarten. Minimum class size is 6 students. Students will be given the opportunity to review essential skills for success in Kindergarten. The focus will include activities related to letter sounds and recognition, reading readiness and comprehension, number awareness and recognition, fine motor skills, and oral language. Each day will feature a different on-campus field trip to allow students to become more familiar with the TFA campus. Minimum class size is 6 students. Literature-based activities will spark your child's imagination and turn reading into an adventure! Art, music, cooking, and creative writing will be a part of this funfilled week. It's time to practice and expand the skills that you will need in the next grade level. Tired of doing boring worksheets all by yourself? Ready to make new friends? This summer, in Game On, we'll dive right into math, reading, science, and other foundational topics through game play. Who knows? Maybe your success will earn you prizes or the opportunity to slam a pie in your teacher's (or someone else's) face. No fear if you came last year, we want you here! We often have students who have had so much fun that they return for a second year in a row. In this camp we level the games and activities by skill level, so these students have the additional benefit of practicing skills for their new grade level and enjoying the new set of games we bring this summer (we're always mixing things up)! Allowing children the opportunity to imagine, plan, and create is an important step in the learning process. God made an AMAZING world and it is fascinating to explore the things He has given to us. Each day, we will focus on a different topic and do two to three different experiments. We are offering this camp twice this summer. However, both weeks will be the same activities. Come join the FUN! Minimum class size is 8 students and maximum class size is 16 students. These middle and high school students will create, contribute to, and publish a literary magazine this week. They will discover how Bible journaling and mastering literary devices will unlock their pen's potential. Eager and hesitant writers are welcome! Topics such as addition and subtraction, estimation, symmetry, measurements, and early geometry will be explored. This camp is for rising first through third grade students. The students will be building a STEM project every day. The students will also be involved with trying to solve a BREAK- OUT BOX every day! Breakout EDU games teach critical thinking, teamwork, complex problem solving, and can be used in all content areas. All young people should be prepared to think deeply and to think well so that they have the chance to become the innovators, educators, researchers, and leaders who can solve the most pressing challenges facing our nation and our world, both today and tomorrow. This weeklong lab will encourage your child in these areas! 11 Top of the Class Calling all rising 5th grade students! Call up your friends and come get a jump-start on the upcoming school year in a fun, interactive setting. By the end of the week, students who attend will have read the required chapter book, completed their summer project, previewed 5th grade math, science, and social studies standards, AND started racking up AR points. Come get a head start on what could be a challenging academic year. (Parents: students who attend will also leave with an optional practice packet and answer key to continue the learning at home throughout the month of July). Daily instruction will focus on individual aspects of the game, mental approach to the game, and the understanding of team philosophies. Drill instruction will include hitting, throwing, pitching, fielding, base running, and proper warm-up techniques. Each day campers will also compete in individual skills, as well as game situations. The camp instruction staff will consist of the varsity baseball staff at TFA. Players should wear baseball appropriate clothing, and bring their own gloves, bats, and cleats daily. 12 Football The TFA summer football camp will focus on the fundamentals of the game. These fundamentals include proper footwork, catching skills, throwing skills, blocking skills, tackling skills, and sportsmanship. Each day will include individual instruction and sportsmanship training, along with team and individual competition. The camp coaches will include TFA varsity football players and TFA varsity coaches. Children will receive instruction in a competitive environment that will allow them to improve their skills and have fun. There will be a daily spiritual emphasis and an awards ceremony that parents may attend on the last day of camp. Each child will receive a camp T-shirt at the end of the week. Players will need to wear cleats, shorts, and an athletic shirt each day. Competitions include: punting, passing, kicking, catching, team competition, and obstacle course competition. Advanced team building and fundamentals are taught, as each player will be placed on a team for the entire week. There will be five-on-five and threeon-three competitions, as well as fun games and an emphasis on the TFA basketball program. Your child will improve their basketball skills and abilities in a competitive environment that features a daily spiritual emphasis. Each participant will receive a camp T-shirt. Each day will include individual instruction along with team and individual competitions. The coaches include the TFA girls coaching staff as well as varsity players. Your child will improve their basketball skills and abilities in a competitive environment that features a daily spiritual emphasis. Gym clothes and gym shoes are required. Concessions are available for purchase during breaks. Tierra Brown Date: June Field House Rising K-8th Grade Before May 19: $130 After May 19: $140 TierraBrown@thefirstacademy.org Wrestling The TFA wrestling camp will introduce and provide the fundamentals of wrestling. Daily instruction will cover some of the basic moves, holds, and scoring associated with the sport. This will help in developing our Royals wrestling team of the future. A clean pair of wrestling or tennis shoes, t-shirt, and gym shorts is required. Please wear street shoes and change into shoes to be worn for wrestling camp. Learn proper motions and technique, jumps, cheers, dance/tumbling, and basic stunt technique. Cheerleaders will also enjoy fun games and activities. At the end of the week, we will have a performance for family and friends. This youth cheerleading camp will be taught by former TFA Cheerleaders and TFA teachers, Ashley and Melissa Rowley. Ashley Rowley Date: June :00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. Gym Rising K-5th Grade Before May 19: $150 After May 19: $160 AshleyRowley@thefirstacademy.org Volleyball The TFA volleyball program is looking to continue building and developing aspiring volleyball players! This camp will use individual instruction, skill development, and game situations to enhance overall volleyball performance. Drill and team competition will focus on passing, setting, hitting, and out of system techniques. We will be playing in a tournament all day on Thursday as well as showing off some of our skills we learned that week. Please feel free to come and watch your daughter and her camp team. Camp staff will include the TFA volleyball coaching staff, players from past TFA State Championship teams, and collegiate volleyball players. These coaches will also provide a daily spiritual emphasis and/or devotional. Players must wear athletic attire, court shoes, and kneepads. As part of an incentive to sign up early, the first 10 students to register will receive a blue and white volleyball. Camp T-shirts, camper of the day, and individu-

14 Gym Rising 1st-12th Grade Before May 19: $130 After May 19: $140 Coed Soccer The TFA Soccer Camp will provide your child with foundations in skill development, discipline, and spiritual formation. Your student will experience one-on-one skill activities, daily scrimmaging, as well as individual coaching. Members of the varsity coaching staff will be out to assist Alvin Alexander as they work with your kids. Each child will receive a camp T-shirt. Athletic clothes along with gym shoes or soccer cleats are required. Camp will be directed by former Division I Lacrosse coach Regan Denham along with current and former college players and coaches. Coach Denham brings with her a wealth of knowledge from over 20 years of lacrosse experience. Our younger players will focus on basic stick work, the fundamentals of defense, offensive strategy, shot placement, and how to begin working as a team. Our older players will focus on advanced stick work (drills you can do on your own post-camp), LEGAL defensive positioning (forcing, doubling, checking), offensive lacrosse IQ, and what it means to be a disciplined, coachable, and unselfish as a player. 26 College Application Camp Rising seniors, this is an opportunity for you to get a jump-start on the college application process to be ready for your senior year! Students will focus on the applications and the essays to avoid the last minute stress in the given school year. There will be a mix of seminar-style presentations, activities, and time to write. Plus, students will receive individualized attention every day by TFA College Advisors, who all have work experience in College Admissions! *Space is limited. Students are required to bring their own laptop and draft of their resume for the course. These fundamentals include proper footwork, catching skills, throwing skills, blocking skills, tackling skills, and sportsmanship. Each day will include individual instruction and sportsmanship training, along with team and individual competition. The camp coaches will include TFA varsity coaches. Children will receive instruction in a competitive environment that will allow them to improve their skills and have fun. There will be a daily spiritual emphasis, and each child will receive a camp T-shirt at the end of the week. Players will need to wear cleats, shorts, and an athletic shirt each day. Competitions include: punting, passing, kicking, catching, team competition, and obstacle course competition. 27 Coed Soccer The TFA Soccer Camp will provide your child with foundations in skill development, discipline, and spiritual formation. Your student will experience one-on-one skill activities, daily scrimmaging, as well as individual coaching. Camp will be directed by former Division I Lacrosse coach Regan Denham along with current and former college players and coaches. Coach Denham brings with her a wealth of knowledge from over 20 years of lacrosse experience. Our younger players will focus on basic stick work, the fundamentals of defense, offensive strategy, shot placement, and how to begin working as a team. Our older players will focus on advanced stick work (drills you can do on your own post-camp), LEGAL defensive positioning (forcing, doubling, checking), offensive lacrosse IQ, and what it means to be a disciplined, coachable, and unselfish as a player. Athletes must have a stick, goggles, and a mouth guard to participate (It may be possible to borrow a stickcontact Coach Denham). Cleats are highly recommended for middle and high school athletes. (NEW PLAYERS with little experience are welcome!!) Regan Denham Date: June 6-9 Rising 3rd-12th Grade 27 skills we learned that week. Please feel free to come and watch your daughter and her camp team. Camp staff will include the TFA volleyball coaching staff, players from past TFA State Championship teams, and collegiate volleyball players. These coaches will also provide a daily spiritual emphasis and/or devotional. Players must wear athletic attire, court shoes, and kneepads. As part of an incentive to sign up early, the first 10 students to register will receive a blue and white volleyball. Camp T-shirts, camper of the day, and individual awards will also be provided. Concession stand will be open for drink and snack purchases as well as former team shirts for only $5 each.
