This is an opportunity for kids to climb aboard and explore vehicles of all types - public service, emergency, construction, and transportation all in one place. Children and those young at heart can ask questions about what each vehicle does and all its functions while in a safe environment. Accompanying personnel will be on hand to demonstrate how the vehicles work and how they help us in our community. Other activities for children such as crafts and games will be on site. Bring a canned good or a new toy to donate to the Goodfellows program. Students are taught respect, discipline, responsibility and self control while growing in confidence, understanding and awareness. Small groups will be created for individual attention and critiquing of the game in order to learn and develop new skills. Fundamentals will include the essential skills such as passing, setting, attacking and serving. Skill competitions and a contest will be included to offer a fun and exciting way to learn the game on the court. Van Buren Residents = $45 Non-Residents = $60 FUN-DAMENTAL BASKETBALL Grades: 3rd-6th (as of this year) (No Class October 13) Sundays, September 29 - November 10 2:30-3:30 p.m. Sundays, January 5 - February 9 2:30-3:30 p.m. Learn the individual instruction with the focus being on the fundamental skills of: dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and defense. Players will be given the opportunity to integrate these skills into game situations. Team offensive and defensive drills and controlled scrimmages will be played. This is a fun friendly, but competitive environment. Athletic attire is recommended. There will be drills that will require some mild exertion, so the instructors must be made aware of any medical issues (asthma, etc.) prior to the first class. Van Buren Residents = $45 Non-Residents = $60 BASEBALL SKILLS CAMP Sundays, Feb 16, 23 & March 9, 16 (No Class March 2) 2:30-3:30 p.m. Ages: (This camp is primarily for ages 5-10, but up to age 12 are welcome) Big Leaguers have to go to spring training every year, so Van Buren Rec is now offering a spring training clinic for youngsters getting ready to play t-ball and little league. This clinic offers an opportunity for young ball players (boys and girls) to learn the basic concepts of the game of baseball/softball, and to improve upon some of the skills they may already know. Knowledge of basic life skills is essential to the life of a young person. Preparation for Independence Project (PIP) is a life skills program that educates young people in basic life skills, which include: making smart life choices, understanding the responsibilities of an adult, and preparation to live independently. As they learn skills that foster independence throughout their educational life from parents and guardians, educators, friends, music, computers and unfortunately sometimes from the streets. PiP Life Skills provides encouragement and education by teaching life skills in an interactive and educational way to reinforce the concepts of responsibility, discipline, and application of better decision-making skills. 12 12 PROJECT YOUTH This is a community participation outreach program. If you are looking to make a donation for a great cause, this is it. This program will give children who are from families of low to moderate income a chance to participate in the various recreation programs at our facility. Applicants seeking to apply for this Scholarship can call Director, Jennifer Wright at (734) Scholarships will not be granted until the Recreation Department receives funds. Information ADA ACCESSIBILITY The Van Buren Parks and Recreation Department is working toward making all of our facilities, programs, services and activities accessible to everyone. Individuals requiring an auxiliary aid or accommodations should advise us of your needs at the time of registration or a minimum of 72 hours prior to the start of the service. Every effort will be made to make the facilities accessible. REFUND POLICY Patron satisfaction is our most important objective. Full refunds will be issued if the Recreation Department cancels a program. Refunds will be given during the first week of the class/program ONLY. NO refunds after one week of classes starting. A $10.00 administrative fee per person, per program, per season will be charged for all refunds requested by the participant. Credit vouchers are another opportunity for a refund. $10.00 administrative fee is waived on credit vouchers. Refunds or reduction of fees will not be given for classes missed by the participant. Refunds will be received in the mail within 4-6 weeks. No refunds for oneday programs, community events and trips. VOLUNTEERS The Van Buren Parks and Recreation Department is looking for volunteers to assist with our community activities, events and youth programs. There is something for everyone, ongoing volunteer programs or a few hours of activity helping others. Upcoming volunteer opportunities include: Touch a Truck, Candy Loop and Daddy Daughter Dance.
