2 Hamtramck Public Schools Recreation Department Fall/Winter 2012/13 Dear Hamtramck Residents: Greetings from your Hamtramck Recreation Department! I invite you to browse our brochure to check out all recreation has to offer. You will find a variety of fun activities for the whole family. We have something for everyone from the youngest child to the oldest child at heart. Our programming goes beyond just sports related programs. We offer gardening, art, CPR training, and dance just to name a few. For those of you who are conscience about physical fitness we offer work out classes for all ages. The Hamtramck High School Community Center has a full work out facility along with a sauna, racquetball courts, and gyms available for use. As you continue to look through the brochure you will notice we offer special events like the Back to School Carnival, Halloween Happening, December is Special to Me Essay contest, Winter Glow and the Daddy Daughter Dance. We also offer trips for children, families, young adults, and senior citizens. Even though the weather is changing, you don t have to get out of the water. Our indoor pool at the Hamtramck High School is open year round offering swimming lessons, lap swimming, and water aerobics. Understanding Hamtramck s diverse culture we are now offering gender specific swim lessons. I encourage you to participate in all we have to offer. A world of friends, fun, and fitness waits just outside your door. We encourage all residents to discover and enjoy the benefits of your millage dollars at work. 5 Hamtramck Parks and Recreation Refund Policy Please keep in mind our minimal fees are in place to ensure you or your child's participation. Full refunds will be given if a program is cancelled by the department due to low enrollment. You must collect your refund or use it as a credit within 2 weeks of class cancellation. If you enroll in a program and decide you can not attend prior to the first day you will be issued a refund, less a $5 administration fee. The $5 administration fee can be waived if you choose at that time to take a house credit and enroll in another class. You must use the house credit at the time of the refund. You may use the refund toward any program put on by the department. Refunds or house credits will not be issued after the start date of a program, even if you did not attend the program. You may not substitute a different participant for a program. Any program less than $10 will not be issued a refund at any time. Refunds will only be given for a field trip 1 week prior to the scheduled field trip. Fees put in place by the Recreation Department do not cover costs of instructors, materials, uniforms, equipment and other overhead. Our fees are commitment fees, put in place to ensure participation from those who sign up. Refunds will not be given if a class is cancelled due to weather, school being closed or a scheduling conflict. The department will do its best to make up any missed classes although sometimes this may not always be possible. *Resident Rate* Anyone who lives in Hamtramck or who attends or is employed by the Hamtramck Public School, District. This includes parents of Hamtramck Public School students. You must bring in proof of residency or school enrollment or employment to be granted resident rates. 6 Special Events Back To School Carnival Come and celebrate back to school with us. There will be rides, crafts, face painting, limited give a ways and tons of fun! Date: Thursday, August 23 Time: 4:00-7:00 p.m. Location: Pulaski park Our annual Punt, Pass and Kick Competition will also be held at this time. Kids ages 8-15 can show off their football skills. Halloween Happenings Dress up in your spookiest costume and enjoy a few hours of Halloween fun! There will be hayrides, goody bags for kids and more. We will also have a pumpkin patch where you can pick out your favorite pumpkin and take it home for only a dollar! Cider, donuts and goody bags will be handed out until they are gone. Rain or shine, please dress appropriately for the weather. Date: Saturday, October 20 Time: 11:00-2:00 p.m. Age: All Ages Location: Pulaski Park Fee: Free to residents The Pumpkin Plunge Everyone needs a pumpkin with Halloween just around the corner. For those of you who can swim this event is a perfect way to get one. We have plenty of pumpkins that mysteriously grew in Hamtramck High School pool. Help us get them out and take them home to carve. Certain pumpkins will be marked and you may get a special prize! As always our recreation lifeguards will be on duty. Date: Monday, October 22 Time: 5:00 p.m. Fee: $2.00 Resident, Act# 6300 $4.00 Non-Resident Act#6301 Age: 5-17 w/adult You must be able to swim in order to participate! 6 Tickets must be purchased in ad- vance! Purchase tickets September 24-October 24 December is Special To Me Essay and Winter Wonderland picture contest. You may begin turning in essays and pictures on Monday, November 5. Essays and pictures must be turned into the Hamtramck High School Community Center no later than Friday, November 30 by 5:00 p.m. Students can write an essay words explaining why December is special to them. Any child in the 4 th, 5 th or 6 th grade may enter this creative writing contest. Grades K-3 can enter the creative drawing contest. All essays and pictures will be displayed at WINTER GLOW. Please see the flyer for official rules and details.

7 Special Events 17th Annual Winter Glow Get in the spirit of winter with horse and buggy rides, crafts, ice sculptures, and hot cocoa. There will be a special appearance by Santa! Please bring a camera if you would like a picture. Date: Saturday December 8 Time: 11:00-2:00 p.m. Age: All Ages Location: Hamtramck High School Community Center Fee: Free to residents Santa Breakfast Tickets will be on sale Monday, November 5 until Wednesday, December 5 at 5:00 p.m. or until they sell out. Please buy tickets in advance. No tickets sold day of event. Visit with Santa and his helpers. Participate in fun crafts and face painting. Please bring a camera if you would like a picture. Buy your tickets early. They may sell out before the end of sale date. Please buy tickets in advance from the Hamtramck High School Community Center. Make a memorable night for your little girl! There will be dancing, food, punch and more. This is a special dance for fathers and their daughters, moms will not be admitted. Uncles, Grandpas and big brothers are welcome to substitute if dads cannot attend but must be 18 or older. You must attend sessions regularly to participate. for Open Basketball Ages 9-18 Registration Starts:: August 13 Start Date: September 17 End Date: October 25 Days Time: Monday-Thursday 6:00-7:15 p.m. 12 and Under Act # 3326 This is a free program. Players can practice skills during this open court time. Open basketball may be cancelled due to High School or Middle School games or other school events. A parent must register a player under 13. Players must bring a school picture ID, State ID or drivers license to be admitted. Identification must include a picture and be current. Junior Basketball League Grades 4-6 Registration begins December 3 and continues until teams are full or the registration closing date; please sign up early to ensure your place. 10 Soccer Youth Programs 3-18 Its Back! And its better than ever! Soccer coach Mike Pelot is ready to take our soccer program to new heights. Registration is going on now and ends September 7 or when teams are full so sign up today. Practices began in July. Ages: 5-18 Fee: $10 Resident, $20 Non-resident Practice days and times are determined by the coach. The coach will contact you once you have registered. Games are on Saturdays, you will receive a schedule with times.. Girls in grades 4-6 can prepare themselves for the Middle School team by getting a jump start at an early age. The team will compete in the Think Detroit PAL League. Jersey and knee pads provided. This will be the third season of girls volleyball and we are improving every year! Tennis Saturdays Registration: Fall August 13-September 15 or until full Winter October 22-February 2 or until full Dates: Fall-Saturday, September 8-October 27 Winter- Saturday January 26-March 23 Fall classes will be held outside at the Veterans Park tennis courts. 12 Senior Programs Senior Kick Fit Exercise Class This three times a week fitness class is geared specifically for seniors. Special stretching and exercises are done to help improve flexibility and gain strength. This is a continuous class. Days: Time: Location: Fee: Seniors are 50 and over. Nutrition Class Once a month Michigan State University Extension program will provide an instructor to discuss nutrition. The topics will differ each month with new and valuable information. Light snacks will be provided. Please pick up a flyer each month to see the date, time and topic. Join us for coffee every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning around 9 a.m. in the Senior Room. The senior room is always available to seniors during the open hours of the community center. Senior Trips are held at least once a month. Please visit the Community Center for a complete list of various trips including monthly casino trips. Lets Go to the Movies! Every other month we head out to the Birmingham Palladium to enjoy lunch, popcorn, pop and a show. Movie dates below. Trip is for ages 50 and over. Detroit Princess Cruise Come cruise the beautiful Detroit River with us. Transportation, lunch and music provided. You must ride the bus to and from the boat in order to attend. Busses will leave from the Community Center and the Senior Plaza. Trip is for seniors 50 and over. 13 Community Center Hamtramck High School Community Center The Community Center is open Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m.-10 p.m. You may register for programming during theses hours. The registration desk is on the lower level on the North side of the building. The Community Center will be closed on anytime that the Hamtramck Public School District is closed. This includes holiday breaks and snow days. Our fitness center is located in the lower level of the Community Center and is open from 8:00 a.m.-9:30 p.m. We offer free weights, weight machines, elliptical, treadmills and exercise bikes. All people who use the fitness center must purchase a membership card good for one year. Fitness Center Residents $7.00 Act # 1201 Non-residents $20.00 Act # 1202 Senior Resident Free Act # 1203 Senior Non-resident $10.00 Act # 1204 After purchasing a membership card you may select one of three ways to pay for fitness center use. We offer $3.00 daily, $25 monthly or $150 yearly. Proper workout attire is required for the fitness center. Jeans, sports bras, sandals or boots are not permitted. The department has the right to refuse anyone who is not properly dressed. You must be 18 or older to use the fitness center. Children are not permitted in the fitness center. Walleyball $12.00 per hour (with membership card) When available, please call the Community Center to reserve a court. Any child 3 and under or not potty-trained must wear an approved swim diaper.
