2 General Information Course description Contemporary Pediatrics conference is designed to provide current information on a variety of medical and surgical conditions affecting infants, children and adolescents. Outstanding faculty of the Kentucky Children s Hospital will offer presentations and concurrent sessions on a variety of topics. Course learning objectives Upon conclusion of this program, you will be able to: 1) Identify life threatening conditions including stridor, child abuse, dermatologic conditions, and risk for sudden cardiac death; discuss screening and management of some of those conditions; and discuss strategies for preventing and managing them in primary care practice. 2) Discuss appropriate indications for and interpretation of common laboratory and radiology testing used in a primary care setting including the CBC, Urinalysis, and Chest X-ray. 3) Review clinical presentation, pathophysiology, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases such as Methacillin resistant staph aureus and appropriate use of antibiotics; discuss risk factors for infectious diseases including daycare attendance as well as appropriate work up and treatment of symptoms such as fever. 4) Discuss the post-discharge care of late-term premature infants together with their nutritional needs. 5) Review sexual health for adolescents including contraception and risky sexual behaviors Intended audience The Contemporary Pediatrics Conference is designed for pediatricians, pediatric specialists, family medicine physicians, pediatric nurse practitioners, family medicine nurse practitioners, physicians in resident training, nurses and physician assistants

3 Credit The is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The designates this live activity for a maximum of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. ANCC and KBN approval of a continuing nursing education provider does not constitute endorsement of program content nor commercial sponsors. Date and location The Contemporary Pediatrics conference will be held May 19-21, Thursday s activities will be held at Spindletop Hall. Friday s and Saturday s activities will be held at the Griffin Gate Marriott Resort & Spa in Lexington. The Marriott is conveniently located just off Interstate 64/75 on Newtown Pike. Free access to the concierge lounge will be offered to overnight guests and their families. In order to receive the special rate, reservations must be made before the room block is filled or by Thursday, April 28 th, 2011 whichever comes first. Reservations for the event can be made with Marriott Reservations: Guest rooms are available at the special rate of $129 per night. Check in time is 3 p.m. Checkout time is noon. 4 Other events Thursday Pre-Conference: 7:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS) will be offered for an additional charge of $300 on Thursday, May 19th, 2011 at the Marriott. Dawn Turner, MD Lexington, KY Philip Bernard, MD Medical Director Pediatric Transport and Outreach University of Kentucky HealthCare Lexington, KY Although this course is designed for physicians, other disciplines are encouraged to attend. The APLS Course focuses on the evaluation, diagnosis and initiation of treatment of many pediatric medical and surgical emergencies during the time the patient s condition is being stabilized in the clinic or emergency department. Major topics to be addressed include Pediatric Assessment, Pediatric Airway, Central Nervous System, Medical Emergencies, Cardiovascular System, and Trauma. Advanced Airway and Advanced Trauma Procedures skill stations will be included. Limited to 25 registrants. Please register as early as possible in order to receive materials by mail prior to the course. Friday Poster Session: 7:30 a.m. 4:00 p.m. A display of recent faculty and staff research achievements will be displayed in the foyer outside of the main conference room at the Griffin Gate Marriott. If an additional event is not available, the amount of the event for which you registered will be refunded. Many events have limited availability, so early registration is recommended. The reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course due to unforeseen circumstances.
