2 Goal This activity has been designed to provide up-to-date education to health care providers in order to improve health outcomes in the field of immunization and vaccine preventable diseases. New recommendations and guidelines will be addressed through didactic lectures and panel discussions. Target Audience Family practice physicians, pediatricians, internists, pharmacists, nurses, advanced practice providers, school nurses, nursing students, medical residents and medical students will benefit from attendance at this activity. Objectives At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to: Discuss the role of pharmacists in immunization practice Review key components in the successful implementation of a vaccine program in Australia Discuss updates to the Pennsylvania s school immunization regulations for attendance in all grades Describe updates from the Pennsylvania Department of Health immunization program. Utilize the recommended Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice (ACIP) schedules for children, adolescents, and adults Summarize the latest updates from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on vaccines and vaccine-preventable diseases Utilize a patient s personal experience with meningitis to effectively describe the importance of vaccine compliance Describe some worldwide mosquitoborne illnesses of concern in 2017, such as Zika virus and yellow fever Discuss appropriate vaccinations for yellow fever and Japanese encephalitis for patients who express plans to travel to areas with risk Explain the burden of human papilloma virus (HPV) related diseases in both high- and low-resource settings Describe implementation of the HPV vaccination, including age to begin screening, administration of catch-up vaccination, and the 2-dose series Utilize case studies to illustrate the challenges of successful implementation of HPV vaccine programs in U.S. and abroad AMA Accreditation The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. AMA Designation The University of Pittsburgh designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Other health care professionals are awarded 0.7 continuing education units (CEUs), which are equal to 7.0 contact hours. AAPA Accreditation This activity is approved for 7.0 AAPA Category 1 credits. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation. AAPA Designation UPMC has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to designate AAPA Category 1 credits for activities designed primarily for its own learners and other learners within its network. ANCC Accreditation UPMC Provider Unit is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. ANCC Contact Hour A maximum of 7.0 nursing contact hours will be awarded. Participants will be able to claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the program. Accreditation refers to recognition of continuing nursing education activities only and does not imply UPMC or Commission on Accreditation approval or endorsement of any commercial product. ACPE Credit The University of Pittsburgh Center for Continuing Education in the Health Sciences is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Rayna entered Virginia Tech in 2001 as a part of the women s team, which was in the Big East Conference at the time. By the time April 2002 had approached, Rayna was struck with a deadly bacterial disease known as meningococcal meningitis, which then led to 96 days in the UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia, with collapsed organs, non-functioning kidneys which had her on dialysis, in a coma, liver problems and, worst of all, no blood circulation to her hands. The day came when all four of her limbs were amputated and she became a bilateral amputee. Rayna returned to Virginia Tech in the summer of 2003 to her normal college life as if nothing had ever happened. She just recently completed the USA A2 sitting volleyball training camp. Rayna recently graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in consumer studies and plans a career in motivational speaking about priorities in life, determination, perseverance, and never giving up. She hopes that one day she can spread the smile that she wears every day with others.
