5 LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES An increasing number of studies have demonstrated that outcomes with new diagnostics and therapeutics applied in critically ill patients in regards to sedation, renal replacement therapy and ultrasonography, this course will review the research results. It has become imperative to update clinicians on these and other advances in critical care medicine. Multiple organ failure can be improved if evidence-based practices are followed; moreover, updated guidelines from the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Thoracic Society and the Infectious Diseases Society of America have been published to help direct clinical practices in this important population. This course is designed for critical care specialists, pulmonologists, general surgeons, anesthesiologists, hospitalists, internists, family practice and emergency medicine physicians, as well as, pharmacists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses in these fields. The intended result of this live activity is increased knowledge, competence and performance in the delivery of critical care to adult patient. After completion of this seminar the participant should be able to: List factors contributing to poor outcomes in patients admitted to the intensive care unit setting. Prioritize the management and interventions for adults with serious infections, renal injury, and respiratory failure requiring intensive care unit admission. Analyze the risks and benefits underlying perioperative management of antiplatelet and anticoagulant medications. Describe the etiology and spread of the Zika virus. Identify symptoms that may be present in patients infected with the Zika virus and how often they appear. Discuss key concepts related to the transmission, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of Bird FluVirus, Dengue Virus and Chikungunya Fever. Identify the importance of kidney health on clinical outcomes. Define severe sepsis and septic shock. Describe initial management of severe sepsis and septic shock. Review current clinical indications for therapeutic plasmapheresis, photopheresis and other cytapheresis procedures. Discuss options for vascular access, anticoagulation, and prescription for the various apheresis techniques and their associated complications. Review the pharmacology and neuropharmacology of dexmedetomidine. Recognize the indications and available evidence for ketamine administration in the critical care setting. Assess when stress dose steroids are indicated and manage other endocrine medications in the perioperative period. Utilize ultrasound to assist with diagnosis of common conditions and facilitate common bedside procedures and to optimize cardiac function.
