2 Fifth Annual Care of the Bariatric Patient Conference THE FIFTH ANNUAL Care of the Bariatric Patient Conference Needs Assessment Given the continued prevalence of obesity, more patients than ever are seeking surgical and non-surgical approaches for weight loss and resolution of comorbidities. For physicians, nurses and allied health personnel to continue to provide high-quality care, they must keep current with medical/surgical innovations and changes in pre- and post-operative care. This course will inform participants about the most current advances in surgical and medical weight loss through didactic lectures, panel discussions and interactive audience participation. Course Overview This two-day course is designed for general and bariatric surgeons, allied health professionals and dietitians who are interested in comprehensive care of the bariatric surgical patient. The course will review the latest updates in nutritional guidelines, operative procedures and patient management in the bariatric surgery patient. 2

3 Objectives THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY CENTER FOR MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY Completion of this course will enable participants to: Understand the process required for the bariatric patient, from admission into a program through surgery, recovery and long-term follow-up Understand and assess the roles of different healthcare providers in caring for the bariatric patient Differentiate between the different types of bariatric surgical procedures and be able to choose the procedure to fit the patient Understand the role of medically managed weight loss in pre- and postoperative weight management Identify and describe the importance of pre-operative work-up of the patient, including a thorough medical evaluation, sleep apnea screening, pre-operative endoscopy and general health screening measures Understand and assess the role of pre-operative diet/lifestyle education for the patient and its effect on long-term outcomes Understand current surgical approaches, complications and role for revisional surgery Understand how to manage patients in the immediate post-op period and to evaluate the effectiveness of standardized order sets and the care-coaching models Understand how to follow a patient post-operatively, including diet progression, changes in medications and weight loss Identify and describe the effects of bariatric surgery on obesity-related comorbidities Understand the role of obesity and weight loss on fertility Identify and describe the immediate and long-term psychological changes for the post-surgical bariatric patient Identify and assess the role of social supports/relations for success in the shortand long-term Understand and assess future technology and its role in weight loss Accreditation The Ohio State University Medical Center, Center for Continuing Medical Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. The Ohio State University Medical Center designates this educational activity for a maximum of AMA PRA Category I Credit. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. For those individuals seeking continuing nursing education credit may do so by turning in their CME certificate with the nursing board and will receive the equivalent in credits.
