1 21 st Annual RLO: Real Life Orthopaedics 2011 Friday, November 18, 2011 Course Chairmen: Stephen W. Smith, MD Peachtree Orthopaedic Clinic Capital City Club Downtown 7 Harris Street NW Carlton G. Savory, MD The Hughston Clinic A continuing medical education activity sponsored by:

2 Overview This continuing education activity has been developed to provide the orthopaedic surgeon, nurse, surgical technologist and other allied health professionals with the most current information on total joint procedures. Three live surgeries will demonstrate surgical approaches for total knee and hip arthroplasty. Participants will be invited to ask questions specific to the surgical procedure during the live presentation. Faculty will address legal issues, bearing surfaces, computer-assisted surgery, unicompartmental knee surgery, presenting the research and evidence that will enhance patient outcomes. Case presentations with audience interaction will stimulate interest. The format is highly interactive and will provide ample opportunity for participants to interact with the experts. Target Audience The intended audience is orthopaedic surgeons who have expressed the need for information on current practices that will result in improved patient outcomes. Nurses, surgical technologists and other healthcare professionals are invited to attend as member of the team. Needs Assessment Orthopaedic surgeons have a wide variety of prosthesis to select which will meet the individual needs of patients having total joint replacement. The surgeon needs to have an in-depth understanding of bearing surfaces as well as fixed versus mobile bearing knee prosthesis. They request evidence-based protocols for selecting the most appropriate prosthesis based on the patient s age and pathology. The surgeon needs to recognize pain management as a rapidly evolving field with a significant impact on patient satisfaction. Orthopaedic surgeons are frequent users of prophylactic antibiotics and need to establish acceptable protocols that meet required guidelines. Litigation is a potential for any practice setting. The surgeon needs to know how to implement best practices that will minimize the risk. Managing blood loss during the surgical procedure has become an issue related to safety of transfusions. The surgeon needs to understand the risks associated with blood loss. Professional Practice Gaps Previous evaluations indicate that orthopaedic surgeons need to institute pain management protocols that are effective for their patients. They are requesting information on how to modify difficult preoperative risk factors, such as obesity, smoking, etc. The surgeon wants information from the experts on the pros and cons of various surgical approaches. There is a need to gain information on the use of tourniquets and blood management. Methodology-Format The format for this course includes short presentations by experts and discussion from the audience. Three live surgeries will demonstrate surgical techniques and present tips on achieving the best outcomes. Case presentations will afford the participants an opportunity to ask questions and discuss best practices. Lectures on a CD and a course syllabus will be provided to the attendees for future reference. Objectives Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1. Select the correct bearing surface for the patient based on evidence in research and practice. 2. Discuss risks associated with litigation and how to minimize the potential for malpractice. 3. Evaluate surgical approaches to hip and knee arthroplasty during live surgery presentations. 4. Differentiate mobile versus fixed bearing total knee arthroplasty as it relates to type of patient and expected outcomes. 5. Critique case presentations and discuss best practices.
