2 2 Try It in 2017! Baby Blankets for a Cause! Yarn Is in the Library! Boggle - How Many Words Can You Find? Simple Ways to Spread Kindness No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted, wrote the ancient Greek storyteller Aesop. Random Acts of Kindness Week, the second full week in February, was created to encourage thoughtful gestures toward others. Here are a few ideas to spread joy: Do you enjoy writing letters? Pen thank-you notes for local police and fire departments or those serving in the military. Make cards for patients at a children s or veterans hospital as a cheerful surprise. Do you like getting compliments? Everyone does, so make a point to say something positive to people you encounter. Wish passersby a good morning or tell someone you like their outfit. Praise a server, nurse or aide for the work they do. A smile and a few kind words can brighten a person s day. Do you like connecting with younger generations? Get involved with a day care, school or youth organization and read to the youngsters, share stories about your life or teach them a game or skill. Do animals hold a special place in your heart? Buy or make treats for a friend or family member s pet, or collect and donate food, blankets and toys to an animal shelter. District 202 Gold Card Available to Senior Citizens District 202 residents 62 years of age and older, can get District 202 Gold Cards, which provide free admission to all student athletic events, and discounted admission to all student performances. Please contact Director of Community Relations Tom Hernandez for more information at (815) Act of Kindness Some Sparkling Residents! Barb M. Lorraine F. Delores D. Nancy D. Peace.

3 3 Quotes and Tips for 2017 Quiet people have the loudest minds. Never have more children than you have car windows. These mountains that you are carrying, you were only supposed to climb. Just be yourself. Let people see the real, imperfect, flawed, quirky, weird, beautiful, and magical person that you are. Know that your kindness has a ripple effect in the universe. Don t stop until you re proud. Your speed doesn t matter. Forward is forward. Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations. Every act of kindness grows the spirit and strengthens the soul. Change the world by doing one act of random kindness at a time. Stay in touch. Volunteer. Get more sleep. Travel. Resident Town Hall Meeting We are holding two Town Hall meetings on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., in the Community Room. We encourage everyone to attend one of the meetings and learn about all the new things going on in our community. Your questions are always welcome. February Birthdays to Celebrate! 5 6 Get Moving! Please check with your physician before starting any exercise program. Fitness programs are all held in the Community Room. Silver Sneakers Basic Chair Class Monday through Friday 9:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. The Heart and Soul As I talk with our residents, I often hear about our wonderful and competent staff, the great programming and services, and how much they enjoy living at Cedarlake. One very important focus for our leadership team in 2017 is to improve our communication, support, and recognition with our front-line staff. They really are the Heart and Soul of our community and they are the ones providing the great support and services you receive every day. One of our new initiatives we started in January, is our monthly All Staff Meeting in which we get together to do training, update staff on what s happening, and provide time for questions and feedback. In addition, we ve started a new Employee of the Month Program to provide recognition for our outstanding staff. We want to honor our staff that go above and beyond in providing great services for our residents. We re also rolling out a Wall of Fame area to provide information and recognition for our staff - including pictures of new staff and our employee of the month. I m sure you would agree our additional investment of time, communication, and recognition of our employees is a very worthwhile endeavor for our community. Please let us know when one of our staff does something extraordinary and brings a smile to your face. As always, blessings to all of you! Mark Miron, Executive Director Cardio Class Has Been Cancelled for February. Lack of interest and attendance merits our instructor to cancel at this time. Work Out Room Sign up at the front desk to learn how to safely use the gym equipment. Talk About It: Love Stories Use this discussion topic to reminisce about your past. Talk with your friends about your memories and learn how everyone s experiences were similar or different. Do you have a spectacular real-life love story to share? What are your favorite love stories from television, movies, theater and books? Many classic love stories, such as the films Roman Holiday and Casablanca do not end with the couple together. Do your favorite romance stories end this way, or do you prefer a happy ending together? Are you or have you been married? Was the proposal especially memorable?

6 7 Health Interesting Pear Facts By Brian Rosso I hope you find the following pear facts interesting and informative. The first pear tree was planted in America in the 1620s. One pear contains only 100 calories. Pears are a good source of vitamin C and fiber. A fresh pear is ripe when the stem area of the pear is soft when gentle pressure is applied. If the middle of the pear is soft to the touch, the pear is overripe. Michigan ranks No. 5 in regard to harvesting pears. The top two pear varieties grown in Michigan are Bartlett and Bosc. Other pear types include: Anjou, sweet with a citrus flavor. Comice, sweet with a buttery taste. Concorde, crunchy with a vanilla flavor. Seckel, small in size and very sweet. Pears are available at all American House locations. Wellness Center News February is Heart Healthy Month. If you wish to see a doctor who visits here at Cedarlake, please sign up with Diane, our Wellness nurse at the wellness center to make your appointments with the following doctors and/or nurse. Entertainer, Jennifer Hall Tuesday, February 21st, at 2:30 p.m. Jennifer will be in the Community Room for our February birthday party. Her genre s range from Motown to Jazz, Big Band to Country, and Rock & Roll to Ballads. Jennifer is a new entertainer to our community.

7 February 2017 John Dominis was born and raised in New York City. After graduating from high school he went on to study at Cooper Union Evening School of Engineering. John worked and attended classes from to earn his degree in Chemical Engineering. During the years 1952 to 1954, he served in the Army and was stationed in Georgia, New Jersey, New Mexico, and Texas. John received his Master s Degree in Chemical Engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic in This same year he met Nancy, his wife, in Philadelphia. John has three sons, two of whom were born in Holland and one son born stateside. His career in process design of chemical plants and refineries took him all over Europe and the United States. One of their favorite places to live was Amsterdam because it was old and quaint. John enjoys reading Roman period historical books as well as mysteries. A hobby he enjoys is mosaic making. John also used to be a translator for Bosnian refugees in Memphis, TN, around John and Nancy would sometimes take in Croatian and Bosnian children with heart issues, as well as their families. This was as John stated, his calling, because of his ability to translate. However, it definitely came back to John and became a heartfelt return, being able to go to the hospital and hold the mothers hands and to wait with them as their children s surgeries took place. He appreciates the kindness of all the American families from his parish that were able to help in this area of need. He has lived at Cedarlake for 2 years and loves how friendly the people are and the good food. John s words of wisdom that he would like to leave off with is take it as it comes.
