Please join the residents and staff of American House Cedarlake at 11:45 a.m. outside in front of the building by the flag pole for the raising of our beautiful flag! The ceremony will include everyone in attendance holding a flag with all of our voices raised as one, to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. We will then proceed back into the building toward the Cedar Room for music and song by Tim Wilsey and Barrett Haselwood. The live entertainment will be heard resonating through the halls during the lunch hour. Chef Sam and his culinary staff will prepare a delicious BBQ lunch for all! American House celebrates with this great tradition every year. Everyone is invited to join in the patriotic festivities on this special day! God Bless America!
2 2 Celebrate the Stars and Stripes The first Flag Act was passed June 14, 1777, to dictate that the United States flag be made of 13 alternating red and white stripes and 13 white stars on a blue background. Today, much of the country observes Flag Day on June 14. Legend maintains that Betsy Ross, a seamstress from Philadelphia, made the first U.S. flag, but it was likely Congressman Francis Hopkinson who designed it. Since the Great Seal was created in 1782, the flag s colors hold special meaning: White represents purity and innocence, red symbolizes hardiness and valor, and blue stands for vigilance, perseverance and justice. The public fascination with the flag as a patriotic symbol came about during the Civil War. Happy Birthday! June 1st Shirley R. June 3rd Judy I. June 3rd Marty S. June 4th Doreen H. June 9th Barb M. June 28th Barbara M. Fascinating Strawberry Facts By Brian K. Rosso, M.S., R.D. The Michigan strawberry season will be here before you know it. I hope you enjoy the following facts about this delicious fruit. Eight strawberries provide only 45 calories, 140 percent of the RDA for vitamin C and three grams of fiber. One strawberry contains about 200 seeds. Strawberries are the only fruit with seeds found on the outside instead of the inside. The only way to harvest strawberries is by hand. The largest strawberry ever picked was half a pound. Historically, strawberries represent peace and prosperity. The average American eats 4.85 pounds of strawberries annually. Strawberries offer the most flavor when eaten at room temperature. Strawberries are a member of the rose family. Birds are responsible for the spread of strawberry seeds across the country. Belgium offers a museum dedicated entirely to strawberries. Visit an American House today and enjoy some strawberries.

6 7 Cabernet and Canvas! Have you ever wanted to paint on a canvas? Follow along with our local acrylics artist and create your own masterpiece! Tuesday, June 28th, in our Arts and Crafts Room from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Don paint clothes and an open mind. You will be guided from beginning to end in the process of light pencil sketching to covering your canvas with the design of the day. The class is casual and fun! We sip a Cabernet while working (provided by American House Cedarlake or B.Y.O.B. if you prefer a different selection!). You will learn to use a variety of brushes, from flat, round, and rigor to obtain different effects and texture. No art background is needed, just your sense of wonder and curiosity. There is enough room for nine artists, so please sign up in the library as soon as you decide to participate and try acrylic painting! You are guaranteed to have fun and a masterpiece at the end of class to take home!
