3 8 Tips for Keeping Your Medications Straight Many people over 65 take between two and seven prescription drugs a day; and keeping track of these medicines may get complicated. However, to maintain optimal senior health, it s important to take your medications as prescribed by your doctor, and take overthe-counter drugs correctly. Use these 8 tips to help you stay organized and take medications correctly. 1. Don t Take a Day Off a. Try taking your pills at the same time each day. To help you remember you could take them right when you brush your teeth, at the start of your favorite TV program, or with the same meal. 2. The Scoop on Mixing Medications a. Make sure your doctor knows all prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and even vitamins so they can point out potential interactions and change the drugs as needed. 3. Mind Your Food and Drink a. Depending on prescription medication foods and beverages can lead to medication side effects. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about foods or beverages that could possibly have a negative impact on the effectiveness of the medication.
4 4. Guard Against Drowsy Driving a. Talk to your doctor about your prescriptions and activities. Ask if it is best to take prescriptions before you go to bed instead of during the day. 5. Lost Your Appetite? a. If you re taking a drug that consistently keeps you from eating, find ways to take in the calories and nutrients that you need to keep up your strength and weight. 6. Know Your Medication Facts a. Get a good understanding of how and when you should take them, and even what to do when you skip a dose on accident. 7. Make a List and Check it Twice a. Create a running list of all of your prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and vitamins. Bring this list with you to all of your doctor s appointments, any time you go to the hospital, and to your pharmacy. Try and fill all of your prescriptions at the same pharmacy so your pharmacists can be on the lookout for potential interactions. 8. Follow Instructions a. Taking medication the exact way it s prescribed can improve senior health.

8 What Happened in January? Home Health Crusaders did in home wellness checks; this included blood pressure, blood sugar, oxygen level and other health related questions. If residents were in need of a home physician (for residents who cannot get to doctors appointments), in home health aide, delivered prescriptions, or nurse wellness checks throughout the week, this was offered. If these services will fit your needs please let Sabrina know and we will be able to schedule according to your needs. Has winter made you feel confined to your apartment? There are plenty of activities around Linden House to keep you active and social during the cold months! Danielle, from Belvedere Living Center, brought lunch, played bingo, and gave prizes. This included roll ups, chips, cookies, valentine s pictures, candy, household items, and more! For the movie day residents had snacks and watched Grown Ups, which had them laughing out loud! Don t be shy and join us for some events, socializing, lunch, and laughs in February!
