7 P a g e 7 Engage Rotary, Change Lives (R.I. Theme ) RI President-elect Ron Burton will ask Rotarians to Engage Rotary, Change Lives in He unveiled the RI theme during the opening plenary session of the 2013 International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA, the annual training event for incoming district governors. If we really want to take Rotary service forward, then we must make sure that every single Rotarian has the same feeling about Rotary that each one of us here has today, Burton said. We need to make sure that every Rotarian has a meaningful role to play, that they re all making a contribution, and that their contribution is valued. Burton said the July launch of The Rotary Foundation s new grant model, Future Vision, makes it an exciting time to be a Rotarian. He said the new grant model, which has been used by about 100 pilot districts since 2010, represents a new era for the Foundation, and will help Rotarians get excited about Rotary s ability to change lives. It takes everything that is wonderful about Rotary and raises it to a new level by encouraging bigger, more sustainable projects while providing increased flexibility for local projects, both of which address the needs of the community being served, he said. Burton asked the incoming district governors to take the lead in helping their clubs through the transition, with the assistance of their district Rotary Foundation chairs, who also attended the assembly this year. The training sessions are focusing heavily on equipping these leaders to go back to their districts as experts on the new grant model. Before the assembly, Burton asked each of the incoming governors to make a donation in their name to The Rotary Foundation in order to demonstrate leadership by example. At the assembly, he announced that all 537 governors-elect had complied; along with donations from all RI Board members and Foundation Trustees, the contributions totaled US$675,412. Now, I have to believe that some of this is money that The Rotary Foundation probably would not have received had I not asked. And I think that this is an important lesson he said. If you want somebody else to do something, you can just sit around and wait for them to get the idea, or you can ask. (Source: Rotary International News, January 2013)

Rotary Literacy Month highlights literacy and education issues around the world. Celebrated in March each year, Rotary Literacy Month is an excellent opportunity for Rotary clubs to raise awareness about literacy, launch new literacy initiatives and projects, and recognize literacy accomplishments from the past year. Rotarians everywhere are encouraged to participate in Rotary Literacy Month by engaging in service or activities that specifically address literacy and education issues either in their communities or abroad. Why is literacy important? Literacy is the foundation for virtually all forms of education and a crucial component of effective social andeconomic participation, human development, and poverty reduction. According to the United NationsEducational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) nearly 800 million people over the age of 15 lack even basic reading and writing skills worldwide. In addition, there are roughly 137 million school age children who are illiterate around the world. Sadly, over 64% of all illiterate people in the world today are women.. Joke of the Month Fred s father grandfather and great-grandfather had all been able to walk on water to the bar across the lake for their first legal drinks. So when Fred s 21st birthday came around, he rowed out to the middle of the lake, stepped out of the boat and nearly drowned. Fred climbed back in and went to see his grandmother. Grandma, he asked, it s my 21st birthday. So why can t I walk across the lake like my father, his father and his father before him? Grandma said,... Because they were all born in January, and you were born in August. (Source: Laughter, the Best Medicine)

13 March 2013 P a g e 13 Geneseo Central School Girls Basketball Rotary Inbound Exchange Student Catalina Rodriguez #44 Catalina has been an important piece to the puzzle this season and has been a true gift from Chile. With a flair all her own, Catalina is a multi-dimensional offensive player, who can take the ball to the basket, pass with ease and dominate on the boards. Catalina's career highlight was the Dansville Game, as she achieved her lifelong dream of playing guard. Her best memories of basketball are playing with Jordan (her best friend here), playing on the national team of her country, and the first couple of games/scrimmages when the referees tried to talk to her and she couldn't understand them. Basketball has taught Catalina "I can be a team player, to try to understand what the coach and the team said. I learned a little bit about American basketball". In addition, Catalina would like to thank her host family (Jeff, Debbie, Madison, and Josh Welch) for supporting her, Michael Bushek, her first host father for coming to every home game, and "Coach Haz for trying to help me. Thanks to the team for this awesome season, I love you guys, I'm never going to forget you." Catalina is well rounded as she participates in Drama Club and volleyball. The Lady Devils will miss her offensive prowess, her infectious smile and all of the cultural lessons she has taught us throughout the season. 14 March 2013 P a g e 14 Updates from El Sauce Enlace Project Welcomes its Largest Service Learning Group On New Year s Eve, Enlace Project welcomed its 14 th service learning group from SUNY Geneseo for a 17 day experience in Nicaragua. The group included 12 students from SUNY Geneseo, SUNY New Paltz, and SUNY Potsdam as well as Sam Cardamone, a study abroad advisor at Geneseo. The students were kept extremely busy during their time in Nicaragua, immersing themselves in their service projects and reflection sessions as well as exploring Nicaragua with excursions to Ocotal, León, and Managua. For two weeks, the students dedicated themselves to supporting the community and Enlace Project's programs by participating in health, economic development, and education programs. Each of the students chose a project based on their area of study and personal interests, and with guidance from Enlace Project staff, they developed and carried out projects while in El Sauce. The complete from Kellan Morgan is available on the Updates From El Sauce link on the Geneseo Rotary Club website.
