1 WEEK OF DECEMBER 7 DECEMBER 13, 2015 From the Desk of the City Manager The Hollywood Police Department held its Departmental Awards and Swearing In Ceremony this week. I would like to thank our men and woman in blue for their dedication to the residents of Hollywood. I would also like to welcome the five newest officers to the force. On Thursday they took the oath to serve with honor and to protect and serve the residents of Hollywood. Additionally, I would like to congratulate all of the Department s award winners: Officers and Employees of the Month August Secretary Eugenia Ekelund September 2015 Officer Steven Regentz, Crime Prevention Specialist Tracey Thomas, and Crime Prevention Specialist Doreen Avitabile October Sergeant Nicola Williams and Code Enforcement Officer Meghan Ramos Lifesaving Awards Officer Jason Dohaney & Officer Vinicio Perez Sergeant Nicola Williams Unit Citation Lt. John Graham, Detective Steve Sparkman, Detective Ricardo Penton, Detective Anthony Adams, Detective Raul Toledo, Detective Michael McBride, Detective Ryan Rillo, Detective Orlando Laso, Detective Misael De La Torre, Detective Justin Lang, Detective Daniel Bromley, Officer Roger Stacey, Officer Danny Ruiz, Officer Mileta Djokic, Officer Robert Channer, Officer Wilson Gouveia, Officer Chuck Burrows, Officer Aldo Blanco, Officer Kevin McClintock Community Service Award Lt. Jeffrey Devlin, Lt. Diana Pereira, Sgt. Lester Cochenour, Officer Matthew Barbieri, Officer Ernest Candelmo, Officer Brian Joynt, Officer Jeremy Ownbey, Officer Roger Stacey 1
2 WEEK OF DECEMBER 7 DECEMBER 13, 2015 From the Desk of the City Manager (continued) Swearing In Ceremony Officer Shana Freund-Gavilondo Officer Mark Mitchell Officer Matthew Rodriguez Officer Manuel Rodriguez-Belvins Officer Michael Mackay Police Shield / Purple Heart Officer Armando Silva Seldom have I witnessed a more poignant and inspiring award than that of Officer Silva s. We said Adieu to this brave colleague after almost 22 years of exemplary service that was tragically cut short after a horrific motorcycle accident during a traffic stop in We wish him and his family; wife Robin, son Spencer, and daughter Heather the best of futures to come. His legacy will not be forgotten. Thank you for keeping us safe! Residents came out in force for the latest Commission in the Community Open Forum on Wednesday evening. About 100 people filled the David Park Community Center as many took the opportunity to ask questions, offer suggestions and share concerns. Topics ranged from human trafficking, backflow prevention, parking concerns at an industrial park, and alley lighting to illegal conversions, Hillcrest and Orangebrook and the 441 improvement project. This was the fourth in a series of Commission in the Community forums that have been taking place in each Commission District of the City. After everyone enjoyed pizza and cookies the forum began with a welcome from Mayor Bober followed by a discussion facilitated by Commissioner Sherwood, who was our hosting District Commissioner. These community meetings are a great way to take the pulse of the community, hear concerns directly from individuals and listen to alternative points of view. The next Commission in the Community Open Forum is scheduled for Wednesday, February 10, 2016 District 3, and will be hosted by Commissioner Traci Callari. The forum will again be held at the David Park Community Center. 2
3 WEEK OF DECEMBER 7 DECEMBER 13, 2015 From the Desk of the City Manager (continued) The City held its annual Volunteer Appreciation Reception at the Orangebrook Golf & Country Club as a way to say thank you to the many volunteers who dedicate their time and talents to serving the City. This year s theme Volunteer Service is Priceless speaks to the volunteers talents and the countless hours they dedicate to making Hollywood a better place. You cannot put a price tag on the benefits the City reaps throughout the year thanks to these committed and devoted volunteers. Congratulations to all the raffle winners, please accept my personal thank you for your service to the City. The goodwill continued on Thursday as the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts held its annual Senior Holiday Luncheon at the beautifully decorated Fred Lippman Multi-purpose Center. It was my pleasure to assist City Commission members with serving refreshments and lunch to 100 seniors as the Swell Tones entertained with golden oldies and sounds from the big band era. The Senior Holiday Luncheon is a long standing tradition in Hollywood, started ten plus years ago as a way to recognize and honor the senior members of our community. 3
