1 From the Desk of the City Manager On Tuesday, I was pleased to join City staff, members of the City Commission and Representatives from the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance to welcome Florida Governor Rick Scott to Hollywood to tour the new headquarters for Aerospace Precision, a company that recently expanded in Hollywood relocating its headquarters and distribution operations from the west coast. The company has had a presence in Hollywood for several years, but recently acquired another firm and decided our City was the right location for continued growth. This expansion showcases the economic development successes that can be accomplished when the Governor s Office, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance and the City s economic development team all work together to move Hollywood forward. Aerospace Precision currently employs 40 people and is seeking to fill 25 added positions including engineers, machine operators and administrative staff. The aerospace industry is one of the targeted industries for Hollywood and for the state of Florida. Our staff is continuing to work with the company to ensure it is able to take full advantage of the many statewide economic incentives and programs to help it continue to succeed and grow. We had a very full agenda for our final City Commission meeting on Wednesday before the annual summer Commission break. One item I mentioned during my comments was an update on the Request for Letters of Interest (RLI) related to Orangebrook Golf Course the Commission had requested. Staff developed this solicitation to gauge private sector interest in the partial redevelopment of Orangebrook Golf Course, while maintaining golf on the site. The RLI was issued on May 22 nd. A total of eight responses were submitted by the closing date of June 25 th. It s worth noting that 6 of the 8 respondents expressed some interest in residential development as a companion to the golf development already on the site. The overall level of interest is encouraging particularly because several of the respondents are large, well-established development firms that have not previously pursued projects in the City of Hollywood. While this is only an initial indication of interest in the site, the results of this solicitation can be used to help inform the creation of a more formal RFP for the partial redevelopment of the site and improvements to the existing golf component. On Thursday, I was pleased to attend our Hollywood Police Department s Swearing In, Awards and Recognition Ceremony. We welcomed 6 highly qualified individuals as newly sworn police officers. 1
2 From the Desk of the City Manager (continued) I am continually impressed with the caliber of the officers we are recruiting and with the work being done by our veteran officers. The ceremony also included the recognition of officers for physical fitness, community involvement and life-saving actions in the line of duty. The Department s highest honor, the Medal of Valor, was given out for the first time since Officer Wadson Sainvil received this honor for putting his own life on the line to protect a family facing the imminent threat of domestic violence related to an incident that occurred at South 26 th Avenue and Adams Street. Congratulations to all of the honorees: Officer & Employee of the Month Officer James Lowndes- April 2015 Code Enforcement Supervisor Alejandro Araya-April 2015 Officer Wadson Sainvil-May 2015 Fitness Award Officer Rosalynn LaHara First Place Individual - Officer Bryan Joynt Second Place Individual - Officer Gregory Brunetto First Place Team - Officer Fregin & Officer Ferriani Second Place Team - Officer Ostrowsky, Officer Regentz, Office Falcon & Officer Hammaker Community Involvement Award Officer Carol Solowsky Life Saving Awards Officer Steven Fernandez, Officer James Gibbons & Officer Robert Joseph Interdepartmental Award of Merit Office Alex Chang Medal of Valor Officer Wadson Sainvil 2
3 From the Desk of the City Manager (continued) These recognition ceremonies remind us that the officers on our Police force routinely face challenging and difficult situations requiring sound reasoning, judgment and training to protect lives and property. I deeply appreciate all of the individuals who commit themselves to this task day in and day out. The dedication of our police force and the essential role public safety plays in our community made the selection of a new Chief of Police a very significant decision. I am pleased to announce my appointment of Interim Chief Tomas Sanchez to the position of Police Chief with the City of Hollywood effective July 10, Chief Sanchez has served the City of Hollywood with a highest degree of professionalism and integrity since joining the Police Department over 27 years ago in May 1988 as a Police Officer. For the past thirteen years, he has been a part of the department s command and executive level team serving as Assistant Chief since August of He has extensive experience leading numerous divisions and sections of the department including professional standards, neighborhood services, drug enforcement, criminal investigations, patrol, support services and special operations. Chief Sanchez earned his Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Florida International University in August of He has dedicated himself to continued education and training in the field of law enforcement having graduated from the Senior Management Institute for Police, the DEA Drug Unit Commanders Academy and the Southern Police Institute. Throughout his career, Chief Sanchez has received many honorable commendations from residents and civic organizations and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Police Athletic League. Chief Sanchez began his career in public service in the United States Army and served for 7 years being honorably discharged in Please join the administration in congratulating him on his promotion to Chief of Police. 3
4 From the Desk of the City Manager (continued) The Commission is now officially in its scheduled summer recess and as such, this will be the last weekly report until the Commission reconvenes on Wednesday, August 26 th. While there will still be significant work taking place, I know many of our Commission members will also try to enjoy a little downtime during this annual recess from our twice-monthly Regular Commission Meetings. The calendar is already filling up for August and September with a budget workshop for the Commission on Thursday, August 27 th from 3:00-5:00 p.m. and the City s two public budget hearings on the 15 th of September and 28 th of September at 5:30 p.m. in the City Commission Chamber. I wish each of our Commission members a restful and rejuvenating few weeks and during this vacation season safe travels to all who may be getting away to enjoy valuable time with family and friends. 4
