1 From the Desk of the City Manager The City s official 90 th Anniversary Celebrations began on Sunday with the Hollywood Historical Society s Historic Downtown Hollywood Walking Tour in conjunction with Cobra Joe Production s Dream Car Classic. Many residents and visitors put themselves in Hollywood s rich history by visiting the more than 47 downtown locations on the tour. Participant s learned about the history of downtown properties along Hollywood Boulevard, Harrison Street and around Young Circle. Everyone enjoyed seeing the rare items that were on display from the City s Records and Archives division and the display of historic photos showcasing the history of Hollywood. The Dream Car Classic exhibited hot rods from the recent past to trucks from the early 1930 s. Many thanks to the CRA for partnering with the Hollywood Historical Society on this official birthday celebration event and special thanks to the Office of the City Clerk-Records and Archives and the Office of Public Affairs and Marketing for curating and displaying items, facilitating the City s participation, and producing supporting materials. 1

2 From the Desk of the City Manager (continued) I appreciate the accommodation and speed in which all parties came together for the Joint Special City Commission and CRA Meeting this past Tuesday. Pinnacle Housing Group s commitment to building at least 100 affordable senior rental housing units on the nearly five and a half acres of City and CRA owned land at Adams Street between South 24 th Avenue and South Dixie Highway is a positive step forward for the City. While I understand 100 units is a small step when it comes to addressing the need for senior affordable housing, this project is a welcome step forward in positioning Hollywood for the future. As the Baby Boomer generation ages the need for senior affordable housing will undoubtedly increase. On behalf of the City administration and staff, I extend my sincere condolences to the Roper Family. Former City of Hollywood Vice Mayor and Commissioner Guy Roper passed away this past Monday. Commissioner Roper was first elected in March 1986 and re-elected in March Mr. Roper served as Vice Mayor from March 1989 thru March 1990 and again from March 1992 through March of The Roper family s commitment to the City of Hollywood dates back to 1938, when Guy s grandfather established the popular Stratford s Bar and Restaurant. The people of Hollywood and a commitment to making the City a better place for all to live was his passion. He loved it - he was a people person, said his daughter, Robin Gayle Roper. In addition to his daughter Robin, he is survived by his wife Marsha, son Guy and four grandchildren. 2

Walk for the Greyhounds, Barefoot on the Beach This annual 1 mile walk fundraiser will be held from 5:00 p.m. 10:00 p.m. Walk on the shoreline from Azalea Terrace to Harrison Street and back. Hollydogs Greyhound Adoption is supported entirely by volunteers and contributions. There is no charge to attend; however, donations are much appreciated. Walkers will meet at the Hollywood Beach Culture and Community Center, 1301 S. Ocean Drive. 5 UPCOMING (continued) Veteran s Day 5K Buddy Run/Walk Tuesday, November 10 Sponsored by Project Courage Foundation, participants will gather at 5:30 p.m. beachside on Johnson Street and run north to Lee Street, south to Madison Street and back to Johnson Street. This event is in memory of South Florida Veterans who were killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, to recognize and thank veterans of the Vietnam War, WWII and the Korean War, as well as to unite local veterans with residents still serving in the military. The registration fee is $25.00 for individuals; $50.00 for teams of two. Park Road, Hollywood, Corporate Pavilion #12, from noon to 4:00 p.m. to the honor men and women who are currently serving or have served in the United States Armed Forces. Mayor Peter Bober works the grill while members of the Hollywood City Commission and volunteers serve a free barbecue lunch to local veterans, service members and their families. All Hollywood military personnel, veterans and their families are invited to this special event to celebrate their service. The menu will feature traditional barbecue fare including, barbecue chicken, hamburgers, baked beans, coleslaw, corn, cookies and brownies, and an assortment of beverages. The entry fee to T.Y. Park and the barbeque are free with military identification. Advance reservations are appreciated, but not required.
