1 From the Desk of the City Manager Birthday salutations are in order. In a few months the City of Hollywood will be celebrating its 90 th birthday, and in a few days America will be celebrating its 239 th birthday. As first predicted by John Adams in 1776 July 2nd would be a day celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival marked with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more. Turns out he was off by two days as the Second Continental Congress worked to approve the Declaration of Independence, but his original idea of an annual nationwide celebration of freedom continues. Whether you don your red, white and blue and head to the Star-Spangled Spectacular on Hollywood Beach, enjoy a traditional cook-out with hot dogs on the grill, or spend a funfilled day with family and friends; I wish you a very safe and enjoyable Independence Day filled with patriotism and pride for this great nation. 1

3 QUIPS (continued) Florida s Hollywood 2015 in Pictures Photo Contests The judging has finished and the winners of the City s 2015 Photo Contest have been announced. Florida's Hollywood 2015 in Pictures Photo Contest invited the public to photograph the sights and scenes throughout Hollywood that best depict the City. This year, all of the winning photographs were taken by Hollywood residents. In the Adult Category, Lori Singer won first place and a $200 gift card with her creative photo of a lifeguard stand on Hollywood Beach, captured through a window with a seagull on the door. Carlos Lopez took second place honors and a $150 gift card with his photo of a stroll through the mangroves on a nature trail with fluffy white clouds against a beautiful blue sky at Hollywood s Ann Kolb Nature Center. Jay Auerbach won third place and a $100 gift card with his snapshot that captured Charnow Park on the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk with a backdrop of twinkling lights and a gorgeous purple sky at sunset. In the Under 18 Category, Daniella Vazquez was the first place winner and awarded a $50 gift card for her fantastic aerial shot of the ArtsPark at Young Circle. This year, to commemorate the City s 90 th birthday, we included a special category for Best Historical Photo. Photographers were challenged with capturing a photo of an historic building, site or neighborhood in Hollywood. Or, they could search the City s historic photo collection and recreate an old Hollywood photo. The winner in the Historical Photo Category was Jon Morganstine, winning a $100 gift card with his photo of the American Flag and its repeated reflections in the mirrored glass of the picturesque Presidential Circle building on the historic site in Hollywood. The winning photos and others submitted during the contest may be portrayed in official City publications such as the quarterly New Horizons newsletter, Hollywood s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), and other documents and electronic media. The contest ran from January through the end of March and garnered more than 60 entries from residents throughout South Florida. Judges scored each photo on creativity and originality, quality of composition, overall design, overall impression of the art and how well Hollywood was depicted. The judges of this year s contest were: Susan Ostheim, Art Teacher at South Broward High School, Mike and Susan Stocker, both Photojournalists for the Sun Sentinel and Alessandro Di Sciascio, Systems and Programming Manager from the City of Hollywood Department of Information Technology. 3
