2 Declaration Flyer Becomes a Treasure After the Declaration was finished and signed in 1776, a printer named John Dunlap was asked to make 200 copies (some say 500) of the Declaration to be distributed throughout the 13 British colonies in America. Declaring independence would not be welcome news to the British, so Dunlap hastily prepared and printed the broadside for distribution. During the next 200 years, many copies, no doubt, were used for colonial bird cages. Some of the original colonial families held onto their copy of the broadside and passed it down to their heirs. But most are lost to time. Only 26 copies of the Dunlap Broadsides are known to survive today. The most famous recent find of the broadside occurred in 1989 when a financial analyst, browsing a Pennsylvania flea market, came upon an crude, and dreary, painting of a country scene in an ornate frame. Thinking the frame might be worth something, the man tore away the painting, only to find that the frame, was poorly made. But behind the painting he saw a paper folded into the size of a business envelope. The ancient printing on the paper was a curiosity, according to the New York Times. A friend thought the paper might be more than a curiosity. Selby Kiffer, a printing specialist at Sotheby's, told the New York times in 1991 that it turned out this was a first-printing copy of the declaration that was, astoundingly, in perfect condition he described as "beyond reproach." One other thing: the Broadside was still wet when it was folded. The first line of the Declaration shows up in reverse at the bottom margin -- evidence that Dunlap wasted no time distributing the Broadsides. By the way, the collector who spent $4 on the painting in 1989 sold the document for more than $2.4 million. A consortium later bought the document for $8.14 million. Health Corner Choices in Mosquito Repellents Consumer Reports tested the following repellents for effectiveness against mosquitoes and ticks: * DEET - Most effective as a repellent at 30% concentration. At the highest concentration, it will repel bugs for 7.5 to 8.5 hours. (OFF, Cutter, Sawyer, Ultrathon) * PICARIDIN - Developed in Europe in 1998 and tested by the Australian Army, this chemical is considered very effective in 20% concentrations, offering 8 to 8.5 hours of protection. Most effective Sawyer at 30% concentration and Natrapel 8, at 20% concentration for up to 8 hours protection from mosquitoes and ticks. At 5% solution, Off Family Care offered an hour or less for mosquitoes and 5 hours for ticks. A 10% solution in Avon Skin-So-Soft Bug Guard, offers 3 hours protection against Zika mosquitoes and 7-8 hours of protection against ticks and other mosquitoes. * Lemon Eucalyptus - Active ingredient occurs naturally in the lemon eucalyptus plant. A synthetic version named PMD. The EPA warns consumers away from products marketing a pure oil of lemon eucalyptus because it has not been tested for safety. Found in the Repel, at a concentration of 30%, It protects against ticks and mosquitoes for 7 to 8 hours. * IR3535, Based on an amino acid, this repellent is not as effective on the Zika-carrying mosquito, according to Consumer Reports. However, a 20% concentration will offer 3 hours repellent for the Aedes mosquito and up to 6 hours for ticks. * Herbal and oil compounds. Burt's Bees, All Terrain, California Baby, EcoSmart all offered similar rates of protection from a half hour on mosquitoes to an hour and a half on ticks.

3 Kelley Klemin Kelley Klemin was born to parents Herbert and Virginia in Lodi, California, south of Sacramento, and north of Stockton. Virginia was a stay at home mother and homemaker, and she had a large collection of orchids that she kept and cared for. Kelley has two sisters, Patsy and Carole, both of whom now live in Sacramento. His father owned a grocery store in the town, which eventually succumbed to the influx of big box chain stores that popped up. After its closure, Kelley and his family moved to Monterey, as his father had accepted a position with a grocer in Carmel. They served a wealthy population, including a number of movie stars who inhabited the area. In fact, Kelley s father was offered a considerable salary to become a manager, but declined due to his older age, and chose to retire instead. Kelley recalls fondly from his adolescence, his father s grilling skills, saying that he would marinate steaks overnight, and that they tasted so good! His mother would also make an exceptional waffle, using mashed bananas, lemon juice, and milk. He also remembers taking rides in the back of his dad s pickup truck through the countryside, and the excitement he would get from walking into a Tower Records store with a list of albums from a music review magazine, thumbing through vinyl and cassettes, looking for the new albums to take home and enjoy. Kelley was drafted in 1965 into the Army during the Vietnam War, and completed basic training in Louisiana at Fort Polk, and his advanced training in San Antonio,Texas. He worked as a Preventive Medicine Specialist, conducting inspections and surveys, and supervising facilities. He jokes that on his 21 st birthday, he was assigned KP duty, and wondered if they did it purposefully! He was fortunate to not have seen battle, and was discharged in Kelley attended Sacramento State University, graduating with a Management Information Systems degree from their Business Administration program. With this degree, Kelley was fortunate to begin a career with the State of California s Department of Healthcare Services as a computer programmer- a job he enjoyed immensely. He processed paid claims administered to the state s Medi-Cal program, and produced federal and state reports from the information. This was before the personal computer era, and everything was processed on a mainframe that held massive amounts of data. They used a programming language called COBOL (common business oriented language), which Kelley became fluent with using. Towards the end of his time with the department, Kelley was excited to work on a project called ChangeMAN, which controlled the lifecycle of development and implementation of computer programs, and was customizable to the user. Kelley knew the technology behind it, and had the necessary skills to help implement it. After 35 years with the State, Kelley celebrated his retirement, but stayed on as a part-time annuitant, as his enjoyment for the position had still not faded. Asked if he has a particular message or philosophy, Kelley states to, Live and let live and respect all people. A fan of classical music, he especially likes Beethoven, Brahms, Bartók, and Schubert. His favorite meal includes lasagna and any kind of ice cream for dessert! Asked to describe himself in three words, he states he s shy, quiet, respectful. He says he admires his parents, because they truly loved him. He also admires John F. Kennedy, as he was refreshingly different and inspiring to others. Kelley says that the things he likes best about the Carlton are the convenience, food, atmosphere, and friendly people!

12 Why is it that as we grow older, many of us expects less and worse? Fact is: we usually get what we expect. Emotions are a strange and powerful lot. How many of us fully understand our own emotions and how they affect us both positively and negatively? How many of us are in control of how we feel? Do you get up in the morning hoping to have a better day yet leave it to chance? Do you make it happen or simply let it happen? Do You Ask But You Don t Get? First of all, do you REALLY know what you want? And are you enjoying that which you desire because even though you may not be aware of it, the thing that you truly desire on a deep emotional level is what is driving your emotions and creating the kind of energy that surrounds you. That energy, be it positive or negative, goes out from you to those around you and beyond. Positive energy is free-flowing, feels comfortable, satisfying, life-giving. Negative energy is uncomfortable, aggravating. If it feels like work, such as the exercise you resist, and you have to make it happen, your energy is probably out of alignment. If you don t want to and it feels like a struggle to make it happen rather than peacefully letting it happen, your energy is probably out of alignment within you. Do you hear a buzz within you that you keep ignoring? Blame it on to a sickness, a virus, something you ate? Something going around? Probably not. Your energy may be out of whack. Whatever we give our attention to creates the energy we generate. You are like a wireless computer, and so you don t have to plug yourself in with some wire in order to connect to the network which is Source Energy, says Esther and Jerry Hicks, author of But it depends on how we align ourselves with The Source of Energy that determines how we feel. When we are full of this energy, we feel great and the world looks rosy. However, when we are approaching, orneriness, fitfulness, despair, and depression are some of the strong emotions we feel. We are not allowing the creative energy to flow through us as freely and fully as it could. Our tank never runs out, says Hicks. Here are the steps according to Hicks, on how to have more and better energy. : Ask for this energy. Remember that which you ask for is always given every single time! The Bible also tells us to be aware of what we ask for for we shall get it. You can t ask for perfect health while you are enjoying the illness you now have, therefore, your deep emotional desire and your intellectual plea/prayers must be in alignment. When we can take the approach to life that, I m going to make the best of this. No matter where I am, I m going to make the best of it. That means that if I make the best of it, it s got to get better, and if I still keep making the best of it, it has to get even better, and then people are going to find us very nice to be with. Children will find us joyous instead of critical; others will find joy through our examples. As we all know, but have a difficult time remembering, we never teach anyone anything by pointing out what they re doing wrong and then trying to discipline them into doing something that we believe to be right. Hicks say, No one else can evaluate anyone else s emotional scale. It s an inside job. It s a personal job and nobody else can do it.
