2 Hill Haven Newsletter Page 2 A Fresh Perspective by Christopher Buwalda I am one who always loves the beginning of a new season, new year, or a new month. It is an opportunity to remind myself that I can start fresh. I can start fresh even with today. At the same time I realize that obstacles and real life situations can pop up at any given time. Do not allow yourself to become stagnant or give in to the thoughts of the past that could prevent you from moving forward. Time is precious and very valuable. Over the years, I allowed thoughts to keep me imprisoned from taking steps that would have had an impact that I would of desired. Past failures can stop us or be used as a catalyst to try again. The thoughts that crippled me were, I tried this before or nothing works right for me. The list can go on and be repeating over and over in our minds. We can find ourselves so easy to just give in to that mentality and just quit. But with a fresh start, movement forward can happen. It comes with making choices that look at the bigger picture of life. I have found out that a small step easily led into another step of reaching my desires and dreams. But it only took place when I was not allowing fear, worry, or the past have center stage. What would you like your fresh start to be? What is your deep hidden desire? What would you like to do in life? It could be college, a new career, or working out a schedule to spend time with a family member. Maybe it s stepping out of a comfort zone. Each of us has that ability to make that choice of a fresh start. Give room to thoughts that motivate yourself like, I can, and work on taking steps that bring you to your desired Christopher Buwalda outcomes. Hill Haven Volunteers Honored For Service On April 27th we celebrated National Volunteer Week with a dinner honoring our volunteers. This year, the Charlotte Nelson Award was given to Jackie Anderson a skilled pianist who entertains our residents every Monday morning. Jackie has filled in for summer picnics with her piano playing and has also brought her bell choir to perform for our residents. All our volunteers provide needed social support, entertainment, and spiritual care. They may help with projects or raise funds for equipment, activities, and general resident needs. Some volunteers come to us with an idea of what they want to do. Others simply come with a desire to help in any way they can. Haven Helpers is a unique group of volunteers who function much like an auxiliary for us. This committed group of volunteers has been improving the lives of residents for nearly four decades. Haven Helpers are always looking for new members to meet monthly and plan events and fundraisers as well as volunteers to help one time at an event Jackie Anderson If you are interested in volunteering to support Hill Haven please contact Carole Agosto, Volunteer Coordinator at or her at carol.agosto@rochesterregional.org.

4 Hill Haven Newsletter Page 4 A Message to Our Nurses from Dr. Bieber Hill Haven has been actively pursuing accreditation for the American Nurses Credentialing Center s (ANCC) Pathway to Excellence Program. This positive step will have a major impact on the way our nursing department will provide care. Pathway-designated organizations are deemed the best places to work for nurses. Healthy work environments improve not only nurse satisfaction but also patient satisfaction and quality of care. Mission Pathway to Excellence guides the positive transformation of practice environments in multiple settings to build global community healthcare organization committed to nursing workplace excellence Vision Pathway to Excellence is valued as a premier healthcare practice environment credential in the world Why? A work environment that engages and inspires nursing staff has a positive impact on : Staff satisfaction Staff retention Resident/ patient /staff safety Care delivery Quality outcomes Why is this important to YOU? Pathway to Excellence designation recognizes organizations where the focus and support of nursing fosters an environment that leads to professional development, engagement and improved resident/ patient care. National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th, Florence Nightingale's birthday. Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing saw nursing as a calling a career focused on unwavering commitment to the needs and comfort of the patient. Her vision changed society s understanding of nursing, bringing the focus on individual health and preventive care to the forefront, and even influencing public policy and healthcare reform to benefit her patients. This dedication to advocacy and leadership lives on today in our Rochester Regional Health nurses. In addition to your tireless care and compassion, you are innovative and driven, and are leading the way toward the future of healthcare. Building on Florence Nightingale s teachings, you are transforming healthcare in this region, and bringing the highest quality care to our patients when and where they need it. I cannot speak highly enough of nurses and their influence not only on healthcare, but on the lives of our patients and our community. For all that our nurses do day in and out, we are exceedingly grateful. Please join me in thanking our nurses for their unceasing contributions to our community. Thank you for all you do. Eric J. Bieber, MD President and CEO But it s not just about the award, more importantly it s about the journey and culture transformation that empowers nursing staff to be involved in decisions about nursing practice and operations. You will be asked soon to nominate nursing representatives for councils that will work on nursing practice and policy changes.

They can be purchased in the business office or at the receptionist desk, Monday Friday 7:30am-7:30pm. Tickets are $8.00 (Regal) and $900 (AMC) and there are NO restrictions. Easter Egg Hunt Brings Joy and Lots of Candy!! The newly re-formed Hill Haven Fun Committee sponsored an Easter egg hunt last month for the children and grandchildren of our team members. As usual, it was a rambunctious affair! Many thanks to the Fun Committee and the Hill Haven leaders who donated candy for the event. Pictured above are three satisfied participants: Kim Deschambault s grandchildren, triplets Cole, Dannika, and Carter. Message From the Chaplain May 4, 2017 is the National Day of Prayer. The National Day of Prayer is an annual day of observance held on the first Thursday of May. It is a day when people are asked to turn to God in prayer and meditation. Each year since its inception, the president has signed a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day. The modern law formalizing its annual observance was enacted in 1952, although earlier days of fasting and prayer had been established by the Second Continental Congress from 1775 until 1783, and by President John Adams in 1798 and Most presidents have issued annual or special occasion proclamations for a national day of prayer. Many residents at Hill Haven have told me: I don t know why God hasn t taken me yet. I don t know why I am still here. The National Day of Prayer is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the possibility that you are still here because the world needs your prayers. Think about it: When you were younger, raising your family, working one, two or three jobs just to make ends meet, there was not a lot of time to sit and pray. Now, you have lots of time and there are lots of people who could benefit from your prayers. Our leaders need your prayers those who lead us in ways of faith as well as those who lead us in civil matters. The men and women who serve us in the military as well as our First Responders who put their lives on the line every day for us need your prayers. The people at Hill Haven who look after you and take care of you day in and day out need your prayers. You family needs your prayers. Your neighbors here at Hill Haven need your prayers. This May 4th, let us rededicate ourselves to our prayer life. Rev. Patrick Shanley, Chaplain
