2 Let the Bells Ring Out to Welcome 2017 Ringing bells is a tradition so ancient that for millennia they have heralded news and celebration. Bells are so common that we nearly take them for granted. It wasn't always so. Bells once had jobs so important that entire cities depended on their voice to organize the hours, including calls to rise, work, worship, and retire. In fact, according to bellringing.org, bells were often invested with a certain awe. In pastoral medieval settings, humans did not make loud sounds. Only the great rumbling and cracking of the sky, evoked goosebumps. So the mighty voice of a bell was thrilling and it had great power to command the faithful and put fear into enemies. China is usually credited with founding the first bells around 3000 to 2000 BC. Early bells were mostly ceramic, but by 1000 BC, China had perfected bronze bells which were used for matters great and small -- on dog collars and in sacred ceremony. The largest bell in existence today is probably the Tsar Bell, on display on the grounds of the Kremlin in Moscow. This bronze mammoth is 20 feet tall and 22 feet in diameter, weighing more about 445,000 pounds. It is the third and largest Tsar bell, but has never been rung or suspended. Tsar Bells have had a rough history with fire. The first bell was completed in 1600 and lasted more than 100 years, but was destroyed by fire in the mid-17th century. A second, larger bell was cast in 1655 but was destroyed by fire in The current bell was cast in 1737 just before another Kremlin fire threatened to destroy it. It fell into its 33-foot deep casting pit as the fire ate away the bell supports. It was raised in 1836 and placed on a stone pedestal where it remains today. Health Corner Join or Start a Book Club For some, nothing sparks a great conversation more than a great book. That's why book clubs are popular for meeting people and having meaningful conversations. The bigger your community, the more likely there are a number of book clubs in the area. Book clubs can have themes that appeal to fiction lovers, history buffs, or even to special interests such as True Crime -- a popular type of reading group. You might be surprised at how many book discussion clubs are available. If there isn't a book club in your area, you can always start one. It can be as loose or formal as you wish. Most book clubs are monthly and members vote on titles of the books they will read. But some book clubs allow members to read their own choice of book and present their review to the members. According to litlovers.com, a group of six to ten is best to give everyone a chance to comment on the book of the month. To facilitate discussion, it's best to have books that fall into a general category or topic. Fiction clubs might choose historical fiction or books on the New York Times bestseller lists. Be sure to choose books that fall into a general level of reading interest. For example, a vibrant book group would have similar reading styles. Maybe they all think Pride and Prejudice is a lively read while other groups might prefer science fiction. Organizers can maintain a list of books for the next six months, an list of members, and choose a member to host the club for the month. The host for the month can offer a dessert or some other small food stuff for the gathering and present questions or quotes from the book as points of discussion.

3 Reba Susi was born on February 19, 1923, to parents Dalton Dylan and Lilly Kennedy Dylan, in the small town of Oak Hill, Tennessee, a suburb south of Nashville. Her parents had a land lease, and migrated down from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, by way of Virginia, to settle in the area. She was fortunate to have five siblings, including brothers DW, James, and William, and sisters Marie Pugh and Jane Ray. Reba met and married her husband, Samuel Curri, who was the Resident Inspector for Chance Vought Aircraft in Stratford, CT, during World War II. Reba was employed there as a secretary in their Sikorsky division. The Sikorsky is a heavy-duty helicopter designed for civilian, military, and firefighting uses. Reba worked for Vought (United Technologies) for 31 years until her retirement! Some of Reba s favorite life experiences include seeing the Big Band groups of the era perform live. This included Woody Herman, whom she saw in Chicago, and Artie Shaw, who excelled at playing the saxophone and clarinet. She also recalls fondly the amazing opportunity she had in November 1960, of seeing then-massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy speak in Bridgeport, CT, mere days before being elected President of the United States. She says that her son, Lou, had recently broken his leg, and was walking with crutches. Some of the crew running the event spotted them, and escorted them to almost the very front of the huge crowdso close that Reba said, We could almost reach up and touch him! She remembers vividly his reddish hair and very well tailored suit. Reba relocated to Davis to be closer to her family, and has found the Carlton to be a wonderful place for her to live. Her grandson, Jake, is the Dining Room Manager, and she enjoys the opportunities she has of being with family, and the activities and musical entertainment that are offered. She loves making ceramics and reading, and listening to Big Band, classical, and jazz music. Her favorite meals include Italian dishes and soups, and a slice of cheesecake for dessert! Her favorite movies include Doctor Zhivago and Gone with the Wind. Reba describes herself in three words as caring, generous, positive. She admires Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt for their services to our nation, and helping to pull a lot of dismayed and hopeless people out of the Great Depression. Reba s husband s family, in fact, created ornamental ironwork for many churches in the region, and even made some of the cast iron cookware that Eleanor personally owned! Reba was able to view it personally when visiting their estate in Hyde Park, New York. Reba admires the staff at the Carlton, stating that, People are nice, and you can never ask for anything they aren t happy to help you with. She would like to offer the verse: do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

12 Here we are going into the second quarter of the rest of our lives and I m wondering how many of us have learned to take charge of our own futures? It s so easy to just bump along, taking what comes and wondering why the same things keep happening to us. How many of us fully realize the power that we carry around with us, mostly untapped and deteriorating from nonuse. Many of you will know that I am referring to brainpower. rather than allowing our minds to run free with worry, anger, and other negative emotions that minimize our chance to be healthy, gain peace of mind, and have lasting happiness. There is no magic formula or age limit. We just have to take charge and become the CEO of our own lives. How do we do that? I am the CEO of My Life Many people start out their day with prayer and meditation and end it the same way. In addition to prayer and meditation we can examine our thought process to insure that we have not formed the habit of looking at life through negativity. Here s one way to test yourself : Ask yourself if you see a glass of liquid half full (positive thinker) or half empty (negative thinker). Also, being critical and not accepting of others comes from negative thinking. Seeing the good in people and being able to compliment and help them when needed is being a positive thinker. Another positive attitude shows when we are friendly to a new person who enters your environment, such as when a new resident moves in to your community. Remember how it feels to be the new kid on the block. Those feelings seldom change just because we are older. Our brain is like a computer. It is waiting for us to learn how to use it and then it will perform for us. Our brain/mind needs specific instructions from us so that it knows exactly how we want it to perform. It doesn t care if our input is negative or positive; it will perform either way. That s why it is so very important to insure that the input is positive. Positive input comes from everything we do and think. It includes the people we see every day, the movies we watch, the books and newspaper we read, the amount of world news we watch, and etc. I know that often life becomes difficult, as we grow more seasoned. Loneliness and illness are not much fun to live with, but again, we make the choice in how we are going to deal with them. First of all, I encourage you to focus on and be grateful for the time you had with your loved one never focus on the loss. Secondly, never take possession of an illness by referring to it as My. Treat it as the uninvited guest that it is, look at it as an inconvenience and determine to live your life in a positive manner. One of my favorite quotes from Dr. Wayne Dyer goes something like this: I d say that sums it up pretty well. As always, we are left to make our own free choices and we are also left to live with the results of those choices. I have found that it takes less energy to live a positive life and to be the CEO of my own life.. Einstein said, "We cannot solve our problems using the same thinking we used when we created them.
