1 Villa Voices Information for our Residents, Family Members and Volunteers The Villa Care Centre & Retirement Lodge Volume 15 Issue 8 2nd Annual Wheels 4 Wheels Charity BBQ August 2018 The Huronia Seniors Volunteer Care Team (HSVCT) and the Villa Care Centre's Resident s Council were firing up the grills at the 2nd annual Wheels 4 Wheels wheelchair-accessible transportation service barbeque fundraiser. This event was open to all members of the community and those that attended enjoyed tasty burgers. Resident's Council raised $266.00, with all proceeds going directly to Wheels for Wheels. Wheels for Wheels is a donation based transportation service for individuals in North Simcoe who require wheelchair accessible transportation. Please contact them at wheels4wheels.5566@gmail.com or by phone at to book a ride with them or for more information. As a registered charity, they are able to give a tax receipt for donations that they receive. All drivers for the van volunteer their time for those in their community. 2 Education News Denise Pickett, Nursing Education Co-ordinator I hope everyone is enjoying the longer somewhat hot summer days and getting out as much as possible as the snow is just around the corner. With the heat please remember to hydrate as heat illness especially in the elderly is a concern. Our Education Focus for August is on Resident s Rights: the staff will be completing the RELIAS education on-line as well as copies of Every Resident-Bill of Rights for People who live in Ontario Long Term Care Homes are available for everyone by the Administration office. The staff will also receive a copy of the Jarlette Mission Statement which will be reviewed during our meetings. Debbie Lashbrook, our Psychogeriatric Consultant, will be here August 31st at 1015hrs for a round table discussion with all staff. She comes in monthly and is a great resource for staff and families. Our social media policy will be reviewed with staff through our communication books. If you have any questions regarding this, do not hesitate to contact our Administrator, Jill Wismer and/or our RFSC, Debbie Emmerton. Cori Johnson from the Palliative Care Network will be educating the staff on August 22nd at 1015hrs. The topic is to be announced and will be accompanied by a round table discussions of staff concerns. Lock out Tag out education will also be a focus of August education for our Managers as identified in our policy, and, as well, a safety talk for our front line staff will be scheduled. Please welcome Sherri Henderson to the Villa team as our new hairdresser. Sherri comes to us with a lot of experience, having run her own salon in the community. Stop by the hair salon to say hello and book your appointment. Her hours are 9:30-5:00, Monday to Friday and Saturdays 9:30 2:00.

3 Volunteer Ventures Lauren Parent, Life Enrichment Coordinator Not sure what volunteering at The Villa would involve? It is actually quite simple: sitting down and talking with an older person, listening to their life stories and just being some kind and thoughtful company. When you volunteer at a long term care home, you re almost guaranteed to make a few new friends. They may not be your usual crowd, but, at one time, they were your age and they can probably teach you a thing or two about life! Not only will you make friends, but you will also be improving the lives of the people you meet. In addition, you ll be providing an invaluable service to your community. There s no limit to the number of volunteers who can make long term care homes more fun and enjoyable for their residents. With more volunteers, homes can plan more special events and outings. For residents, moving away from your home and losing much of your independence is not easy especially after you ve been independent for so long. Being able to share knowledge with a young person can help nursing home residents regain a little bit of the independence they ve lost. The fact is that the couple of hours you take out of each week to visit could be the hours that a resident looks forward to most. Attending to the social needs of seniors can involve almost limitless activities from going for a stroll to painting someone s nails. Just think of it like a date with your best friend only he or she happens to be a few decades older than you! As long as you re making the residents feel loved and heard, you re performing an invaluable service to our residents. How much of a difference can your few volunteers hours make? Not only do you keep residents from feeling lonely, but you also act as a brain trainer. Older brains need stimulation just as much as younger brains, and these conversations and time spent can help keep our residents sharp and happy. The companionship you provide can also benefit you as you learn from their life experiences and hone you own social skills. Ready to jump into action? 4 Activation Lauren Parent, Life Enrichment Co-ordinator On Wednesday, August 8th, residents and family members enjoyed entertainment provided by Janet and Dave of Jayco Productions. With a Caribbean theme, we were whisked away to the sunny south with favourites from Jimmy Buffet, The Beach Boys and Bob Marley. Everyone had a great time, as Janet and Dave always put on a very energetic show filled not only with music but with fun trivia and jokes. Janet and Dave are also the owners of Harbour Life in Wasaga Beach, specializing in holistic remedies. For more information on their shop, please check them out at On August 14th, we enjoyed the interactive entertainment of Ivgeni Kriger, who shared his musical talents with the saxophone. Residents were given instruments and were able to join in with his songs. This was Ivgeni s first visit to the Villa Care Centre, and we certainly hope that it will not be his last! 6 From the Administrator s Desk Jill Wismer Greetings Everyone, It is with mixed emotions that our Volunteer Co-ordinator, Stacy Zelazny, has left her position at The Villa Care Centre. We wish Stacy all the best in her future endeavours, and thank her for the impactful years of service she dedicated to our organization. At this time, I will act as your primary point of contact for all volunteer-related programs and correspondence. We are actively looking to fill this position, and truly look forward to finding fresh new talent to take on this role. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to get in touch with me directly; otherwise, I look forward to working with you in the future. With all this nice weather we have been having, our residents and families have really enjoyed their time outside. We ask that, when taking a loved one out, you ensure you are letting the Charge Nurse know, signing out in the book, and bringing the necessary equipment to ensure safety; for example, wheelchair foot rests. We find that when pushing a wheelchair, the resident might accidentally lower their feet to the ground and cause injury. If you are having troubles finding foot rests, please let the staff on the unit know.
