1 April 2018 Newsletter Dove Healthcare - Rice Lake Update From The Administrator For the past six months I have mentioned that we are in our annual state survey window. The day finally came where the Wisconsin Department of Health Services survey team showed up! On Monday, March 26 our annual survey process began. Over the last three days during the survey process, the surveyors observed resident cares medication passes and dining services; audited the kitchen and resident medical records; interviewed all residents and some family members; quizzed employees, and ensured our facility is compliant with all federal and state regulations. I am beyond proud to share with all of you that our team received a citation-free survey! This is a huge achievement, and it makes me feel even more honored than I already feel every day to be a part of this team. It shows throughout our home how privileged we feel to care for the residents, and we are grateful that it did not go unnoticed during our survey process. I am extremely thankful for everything our team does on a daily basis to provide quality care and services, and we are also particularly appreciative for your involvement every step along the way. There is always room for improvement, and now that we are finished completing our survey process, we can step back and ask ourselves, How can we be better? Thank you for all your support and for giving us the opportunity to care for you or your loved one. Sincerely, Marie Zachmann, Administrator Volunteer Needs 1-2 volunteers are needed to assist with bingo play every Tuesday afternoon in April from 1:30-3:15 PM. 1 volunteer is needed to assist with manicures every Wednesday in April. 2 Nursing Headlines April 2018 Newsletter Dove Healthcare - Rice Lake Rockin In Rehabilitation Pain management is a very important factor that is continually assessed by our nursing employees to assure the highest quality of life for each resident. Pain that is well managed can assist with improvement of appetite, social interaction, independence and allows each resident to function at their highest physical capacity. Pain can be identified through verbal and nonverbal indicators. Some residents are able to clearly describe their pain symptoms, however, some residents can not describe their pain, or even state that they have pain. For this reason, nursing is continually monitoring residents for pain symptoms and verbal or non-verbal indicators of pain. Nonverbal pain indicators include expressions of pain not put in words, including groans, tense body language, facial grimacing, clenched teeth, bracing or holding onto parts of the body and restlessness. Pain can be acute and/or chronic. Acute pain is sudden pain that will improve in a short time and eventually resolve. Chronic pain is constant and ongoing. Our nursing employees routinely assess for pain and communicate any new, increased or unresolved pain to the MD. The MD will review the nursing assessment data, and decide on the best way to treat the pain. Nursing employees monitor pain medication effectiveness and for any adverse affects of pain medications. It is our goal and desire to have our residents as comfortable as they can be, with all team members working towards this goal. All of our employees are educated about the importance of reporting pain indicators to our nursing employees. You are also an important part of that reporting process. Your insight about the pain and comfort issues involving your loved one is very important to us. We encourage you to speak to one of our nurses if your loved one is voicing complaints of pain or exhibiting any non-verbal indicators of pain. We appreciate your input and welcome any questions you may have regarding pain management. Brittany Poppe, RN, Nurse Case Manager April is National Occupational Therapy (OT) Month. I would like to share some information about Occupational Therapy for those who may wonder just what it is we do. Occupational Therapy is the only profession that helps people across the lifespan to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities. Occupational Therapy practitioners enable people of all ages to live life to its fullest by helping them promote health, and prevent or live better with injury, illness, or disability. Common Occupational Therapy interventions include helping children with disabilities to participate fully in school and social situations; helping people recovering from injury to regain skills; and providing supports for older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes. Occupational Therapy practitioners have a holistic perspective, in which the focus is on adapting the environment and/or task to fit the person, and the person is an integral part of the therapy team. It is an evidence-based practice deeply rooted in science. Meet our OT Team: Shelly (far left) is a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) and has been with Dove Healthcare for 12 years. She transitioned from Dove Healthcare - Wissota Health & Regional Vent Center when Rice Lake opened in May I m a Registered Occupational Therapist, OTR and Rehabilitation Director (pictured in middle). I have been with Dove Healthcare for two years. Amanda (far right) is a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) and has been with Dove Healthcare for eight years. She transitioned from Dove Healthcare - West Eau Claire in July Thank you Shelly and Amanda for your hard work and dedication to our residents and team! We are very fortunate to have you here at Dove Healthcare - Rice Lake! Courtney Drury, OTR/L, Rehabilitation Director

3 April 2018 Newsletter Dove Healthcare - Rice Lake Social Services Corner Welcome to Spring! This month we would like to talk about the changes coming up in Medicare numbers. Some may have already experienced this change, however, each Medicare member will be receiving a new insurance card as well as a new Medicare number. It is important that these changes are communicated to Anna or Louise in Social Services as soon the new cards are received. We use the numbers on your Medicare card to bill Medicare for the skilled services (such as therapy) for all residents and patients here. It is important that we make a new copy of your insurance cards and then get them uploaded into residents files at the building. In addition to the changing Medicare numbers, it is also important to communicate any insurance changes with the Social Services team. If a resident or family member opts to switch any insurance, that change needs to be communicated to Social Services in a timely manner. Please keep this in mind going forward, and if anyone has any questions, our door is always open! Warm regards, Louse Quinn and Anna Thums Nutritional Notes I ll have a Grilled Cheese, please! From fillyourplate.org What is it about grilled cheese that makes it so universally appealing? If you looked up the definition of comfort food, you may just find a picture of a grilled cheese sandwich, because it easily evokes memories of childhood. Just the mention of the words is enough to make your tummy rumble with longing and delight. You can almost smell the melted, hot cheese enclosed between two slices of crispy, buttered bread. To honor this timeless classic, let s take a look at some of it s more interesting facts. The Ancient Romans were the first civilization to make a cooked bread and cheese-type sandwich. Many cultures since have invented their own take on the dish. In Switzerland, it is customary to toast the bread and melt the cheese separately before combining them, while in France, the Croque Monsieur (grilled ham and cheese sandwich) is popular. When affordable sliced bread and inexpensive cheese became available in the U.S. during the 1920 s, the grilled cheese became a household staple. At the time it was prepared a little differently, open-faced and topped with shredded American cheese. In the 1960 s, the grilled cheese as we know it, emerged when the second slice of bread became a standard part of the sandwich. The actual term grilled cheese doesn t make an appearance in print until the 1960 s. Before then, they were called melted cheese or toasted cheese sandwiches. April 12 is Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day, so make plans to include a grilled cheese sandwich in your menu for that day - they pair up great with chili, tomato soup, or bean soup! Or, maybe you have your own grilled cheese combo? Take time to celebrate this alltime favorite! Sincerely, Teresa Mead, Nutritional Services Director

4 April 2018 Newsletter Dove Healthcare - Rice Lake Recreation Highlights Volunteers... The Heart of our Team Memories from the Month: April 15-22, 2018 has been set aside as a time to pay tribute to volunteers. President Richard Nixon established National Volunteer Week with an executive order in 1974 as a way to celebrate volunteers. Since then, the original emphasis on the celebration has widened; the week has included recognition for existing volunteers, while also fostering a nationwide effort to urge people to get out and volunteer in their communities. Some ask the question, why volunteer? People choose to volunteer for many reasons. For some, it offers a chance to give back to their community, to make a difference. For others it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on life experiences. No matter what reason is given for volunteering, certain benefits are realized, with the most notable of these the numerous health benefits. Volunteering has been shown to improve mood and make you feel healthier. It increases your sense of purpose and reduces stress. Volunteering can give a deep sense of happiness both immediately and long term. As the founder of Project Helping put it, there is a joy that comes from serving others that can not be replicated through any activity other than volunteering. Above: Phyllis works on tulip assembly for spring floral craft. Below: Gladys shows off the finished product. The role of volunteers in our facility cannot be over-emphasized! Our volunteers are vital members of our team. Indeed, they are The Heart of our Team! And so, to our volunteers, we say THANK YOU! We appreciate everything you do to support our mission and the work being done here. And, to those of you who have a desire to serve others, make a difference, gain experience, or find your joy, we encourage you to take the next step --become a volunteer! We have volunteer opportunities available now. Please contact me or go to our website dovehealthcare.com to fill out a volunteer application. We look forward to hearing from you. Til next month, Nadine Williams, Recreation Director Floreen s Antique Roadshow was all about Spring in March and featured flowers, pussy willows and a beautiful antique clock, which fit in nicely with springing ahead in March.

5 April 2018 Newsletter Dove Healthcare - Rice Lake Memories from the Month: Cleo enjoys an afternoon game activity with one of the scouts from Pack 28. Our March cultural event celebrated the British Isles. Residents above and at left work to prepare our authentic Irish meal. Residents below enjoy a very British afternoon tea. Janet, Louise, and Carol are busy with a stained glass craft that provided a St Patrick s Day surprise. Several residents gather to complete stage one of a flower pot craft that will be completed in future craft sessions and will then be used for something special later this spring.
