2 The Most Decorated Dog in the World Allen Parton returned from his stint in the Royal Navy during the Gulf War in a wheelchair. He couldn't walk or speak and had lost many of his memories including the memory of getting married and even the birth of his children. He spent five years in the hospital struggling to come to terms with his disabilities. Fortunately for Parton, he was eventually paired with Endal, a beautiful yellow Labrador assistance dog who would completely change Parton s outlook on life. Although Endal s painful joint condition almost eliminated him from service dog work, his superior problem-solving abilities would prove him invaluable to Parton and would earn him the title of. During their 10 years together Endal learned hundreds of signs including signals to get Parton s hat, razor, and to get items from the supermarket shelves. What s more is that Endal even helped Parton learn to speak again by celebrating every time Parton made a grunt. One day when Parton was struggling to reach up to grab money from an ATM, Endal instinctively jumped up, took the money and the bank card in his mouth and passed it to Parton. On another occasion, Endal demonstrated his ability to react and respond in an emergency situation when Parton was knocked out of his wheelchair by a speeding car and was left unconscious in a parking lot. The yellow Lab quickly pulled Parton into the recovery position, covered him with a blanket, and fetched his mobile phone. Getting no response, Endal then went to a nearby hotel to signal for help. Suffering from debilitating arthritis, dedicated and resourceful Endal was able to teach a new Lab puppy his skills prior to his passing away at the age of 13. Inspired by Endal and as a tribute to his legacy, Parton established, a charity which matches services dogs with those injured or disabled during their service in the armed forces. Health Corner The ability to hear and communicate effectively impacts all aspects of your life including relationships, social interactions, and overall quality of life. One in three people over the age of 60 have hearing loss and one in two people older than 85 have hearing loss. Hearing loss can occur at any age. Although hearing loss might occur suddenly, it most often develops over several years or decades. Some of the reasons for changes in hearing include aging, use of some types of medications, exposure to loud sounds, serious infections, and accidents. Although most hearing loss in adults is permanent, some types of hearing loss are medically treatable or surgically correctable. The most common treatment for permanent hearing loss in adults is hearing aids; however, only a fourth of those who can benefit from a hearing aid use one. Most individuals wait about seven years to investigate treatment options after they begin to suspect having a hearing problem. Reasons for waiting include not thinking that the hearing loss is bad enough to need attention, not knowing what services are available, concern over cost, the social stigma of hearing loss, and a lack of self-awareness. Feeling like others are always mumbling. Asking people to repeat what they say or missing words and phrases on the telephone. Difficulty hearing or understanding speech in noisy environments. Turning the volume up on the television or radio louder than normal. Hearing loss can be managed using technology and improving communication strategies. Contact your audiologist to determine if hearing aids or other assistive listening devices are appropriate for you.

4 Jack & Joanne Chambers Joanne Chambers was born October 31, 1938, in Pratt, Kansas, a small town 80 miles west of Wichita. Being brought up in a farming family required a lot of hard labor and grit, and Joanne remembers her and her sister, ages 9 and 5 respectively, had to cook dinner for nine people each night. She had three brothers, and one sister. Jack Chambers was born October 14, 1929, a mere two weeks before the stock market crash of Black Tuesday, triggering the events leading to the Great Depression. Jack was born in Oakland, but following the death of his father, moved to Fallon, Nevada where he was raised by his maternal grandparents. During the Prohibition era, Jack s grandfather made moonshine in a still on his farm, and Jack lived a bit of the cowboy life! Jack realized early on his talent for fine art, which led eventually to his pursuit of a Master s Degree in Art from UC Berkeley. He served in the Army Air Force for two years during the Korean War, and met and married his partner, Judy, with whom he had four sons. He was hired as a media consultant in the Cooperative Extension at UC Berkeley, and later in Riverside. When Jack s younger son was thirteen, Judy passed away, and Jack raised four teenage sons as a single parent. Joanne spent winters with her family in the mild weather of Tucson, Arizona, beginning her musical career there. At age 14, her father passed away, and she went to work playing the organ in churches and teaching students piano, which helped lead her to a Performance in Organ Degree from the University of Arizona. Joanne married, and had two sons and a daughter. She and her children moved to Davis after her husband left, and raised them as a single parent as well. She loved Davis for its bicycles, safety, and beauty, and taught band and strings in public school for 20 years! While playing organ and piano for the advanced choir at UC Davis, she met Jack, and they married in They were now raising their seven children as a married couple! Joanne recalls a favorite life experience as traveling the world with the UCD Choir. Among the countries they visited and performed in were Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, China, Russia, Egypt, Greece, Australia, Tahiti, and New Zealand. A performance she recalls very fondly is playing for the Catholic Mass in St. Peter s Basilica in Vatican City. Asked about a message they want to pass along to others, they say, Fill your life with music, and do unto others as you would have them do unto you. After retiring from UC Davis, they enjoy spending time with their eight grandchildren, making new friends at Carlton, and being well-cared for. Joanne still gives organ concerts and recitals, teaches, and has made nearly 250 quilts for Project Linus, which provides them for needy, orphaned, and fostered children.

12 Exercise is Key in Improving Balance The probability of falling increases with age but balance training can help to prevent falls. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 1 in 4 adults age 65+ fall each year. Many people take balance for granted and navigate without thinking, effort or fear. For millions of others, however, poor balance is a major problem and can lead to balancerelated falls and injuries. Fortunately, studies have concluded that exercise can reduce not only the odds of falling but can also decrease the risk of sustaining fall-related injuries. Although there are many reasons for senior falls, one of biggest factors is poor balance. Causes of poor balance could be inner ear disorders, viral inflammation around the labyrinthine nerve, other nerve disorders, vision problems, diabetes, medications, or muscle loss. The loss of muscle mass is also a very common problem for older adults. Studies have shown that older adults who do not exercise or are very inactive tend to lose 3 5 oz. of muscle mass per year. Regular exercise is one of the most important tools for seniors seeking to avoid injurious falls. Studies have shown that exercising can increase muscle strength and mass, thus improving balance. The Live 2 B Healthy program is proven to help seniors improve both balance and overall strength. Live 2 B Healthy Trainers are all Certified Personal Trainers who are experienced in working with seniors. They are familiar with the challenges that come with age and customize exercises to fit the individual needs of each resident. Our trainers keep participants motivated throughout the class and make an effort to get to know each and every person by name. u u
