College & Career Room The Oviedo High School College/Career Room has provided a much-needed service to the students at OHS since Staffed by Dividend volunteers, the College/Career Room is located in the Guidance Office. It is open daily. All scholarship announcements will be posted in the Senior English classrooms and in the College room in Guidance. Don't let somebody else get the $ you deserve! Get these applications in! Note: This is not a legal document, and specific details should be checked with the College Room, Mrs. Lightsey in Guidance, or the organization providing the scholarship. Scholarship Update Attention all students interested in obtaining scholarships for college: Your College Room is a valuable source of information on scholarships that we hope you will utilize. Beginning in September, seniors and parents of seniors will receive a weekly Skyward blast of the Scholarship Updates. This update will include information about scholarships with approaching deadlines as an encouragement to seniors to apply. Although most scholarships target seniors, many are available to underclassmen as well. Everyone is encouraged to go to the OHS website> Guidance>Scholarship Info to access this important information. We will also place a copy of the announcement in

2 an orange binder in the college room and ask senior English teachers to post it on their bulletin boards. Applications for the scholarships will be on file in the College Room, and adult dividends are available on some days to assist you in your search. Please take advantage of this service that will be offered throughout the year, and see your counselor if you have questions regarding scholarships. Seniors, the American Road and Transportation Builders Association will award a scholarship of up to $5,000 to assist the children of highway construction workers killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty. You can obtain information about the Lanford Family Highway Worker Memorial Scholarship in the college room. Deadline to apply is April 7 th. Seniors interested in running are invited to apply for the Charles M. Rowson, Jr. Memorial Scholarship of $500 that is offered by the Orlando Runners Club. The application for the scholarship is in the college room and must be submitted by the April 11 th deadline. Seniors, the Chi Phi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is offering a $1,000 scholarship to one student based upon financial need and academic performance. Applications for the scholarship are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is April 15 th. Attention all seniors, the 2017 Fleet Reserve Association offers several scholarships to children and grandchildren of members of the United States Navy, Marine Corps or Coast Guard. Applications for the scholarships are available in the college room and must be submitted by the April 15 th deadline. Seniors, the Johnson Scholarship Foundation will award scholarships to deserving children of UPS employees. You can obtain more information about these scholarships in the college room. Deadline to apply is April 15 th. Seniors, the American Legion Legacy Scholarship will be awarded todependent children of members of the US Armed Services. Information about the scholarships is available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is April 20 th. If you are a senior with hemophilia, von Willebrands or other related hereditary bleeding disorders, you are eligible to apply for a scholarship through the Hemophilia Foundation of Greater Florida. Awards will be based upon merit, need, community service and aspirations reflected in an essay. Information about

Attention seniors, Give Kids A Chance is offering scholarship grants in the amount of $1,000 to high school seniors who have a documented financial need and at least a 2.5 grade point average. Information about the grants is available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is April 30 th. Attention all senior female African-American students, the Connie Joyce Davis scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded by the Nu Iota Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Applications are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 31 st. Seniors, the Lois and W.A. Boothe Memorial Scholarship is for students who plan to further their education at a postsecondary institution. Applications are available in the college room and must be submitted by the April 3 rd deadline. Senior African-American male students are invited to apply for the Jack LeFlore Memorial Scholarship sponsored by the Winter Park Alumni Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Three $1,000 scholarships and four $500 scholarships will be awarded. Applications are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is April 14 th. Seniors, the Abbott and Fenner Business Consultants will again offer scholarships of up to $1,000 to winners of an essay contest. Senior athletes, the BigSun Organization will award a $500 scholarship to a deserving student who will be attending a postsecondary institution and is currently involved in some sport at that institution or in the community. Seniors, the Central Florida Chapter of the International Test and Evaluation Association will award a scholarship of at least $1,000 to a student who plans to pursue a degree in any of the physical sciences, mathematics, computer science, or engineering fields. Applications are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 10 th.

4 Seniors, The Central Florida STEM Education Council will award scholarships to students who plan to pursue a degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics field. Applicants must have an overall GPA of 3.0, extracurricular activities, and community service. Information about the STEM scholarship is available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 25 th. Attention seniors: The Central Florida Chapter Women in Defense is offering a $1000 award to seniors interested in a career in national security, defense, or a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) related field. Applications for the award are in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 31 st. Seniors, the Kiwanis Club of Sanford is sponsoring an essay contest with an award of $1,000 to the writer of the winning essay. The essay is on the topic of volunteer services and the local community and must be received by the Kiwanis Club by the March 28 th deadline. All students grades 9-12 are invited to compete for a $2,500 scholarship in the Optimist International Oratorical Contest. Students are required to prepare an original speech of about four minutes based on an assigned topic. Attention senior girls: The PEO Chapter BQ, Florida is offering scholarships to female students with an unweighted GPA of 3.0 to 3.5. Financial need is considered but it is not the primary consideration for selection. More information is available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is April 10 th. Attention seniors planning to major in criminal justice or ROTC: the family of OHS 2013 graduate Matthew Caselli will award $500 to an Oviedo High senior who has a 3.0 and has demonstrated leadership in school or community activities. The deadline is April 15 th, so visit the college room today to pick up your application. Seniors, the Florida Council of the Blind is awarding scholarships to students who are legally blind. Applications for the scholarships are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is April 15 th. Attention all seniors, the Col. George C. Morton Memorial Scholarship is awarded in memory of those personnel who served in a Special Operations Unit during the

5 Vietnam War and those who were prisoners of war or missing in action in Southeast Asia. Applications for the scholarship are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is April 15 th. Attention seniors: The Pearlie s Lift Up Scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student who has struggled personally or academically in school, given back through service to his or her community, and wants a second chance in furthering his or her education. Attention students interested in a career in one of the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, or math): the Altamonte Springs Science Incubator, in partnership with Dr. Ashley Ansara, has establish a scholarship of $1,500 to provide outstanding Seminole County students the ability to explore and develop careers in STEM. The Coil Law High School Senior Scholarship valued at $500 will be awarded based upon your academic history and an essay on the assigned topic. Deadline for submission of the application is May 31 st, and you can obtain more information in the college room. Attention juniors and seniors: The Kim Coburn Scholarship of $500 will be awarded to an Oviedo High School junior or senior who has improved their grade

6 point average from the fall 1014 semester to the spring 2015 semester or maintained a 4.0 or higher GPA for the entire year. Attention seniors, the Foundation for Seminole County Public Schools will award several scholarships to graduating seniors of Seminole County high schools. Among the scholarships that will be awarded to Oviedo High School students are the Colonel Joseph F. Nardo Scholarship and the Catherine Toots Nardo Scholarship. There is only one application you must complete to apply for these awards, and that application is available in the college room. The deadline to apply is March 31 st. Scholarships will be awarded at Senior Awards Night, so come to the college room for information on applying for these Foundation scholarships. Are you a high school senior who loves Oviedo? If so, you could be this year s recipient of the Oviedo Preservation Project Scholarship. You can find out more information about the scholarship and how to apply in the college room. Seniors, the Robert Locke Scholarship was established in memory of the 2006 Oviedo High graduate to recognize and assist an OHS senior planning to major in theatre at the college level. The Central Florida Gator Club, an affiliate of the University of Florida Alumni Association, is pleased to announce six new scholarships. To apply, you must be a senior who has been accepted into the University of Florida. Applications are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 31 st. Attention seniors whose parent is a member of the Non Commissioned Officers Association. You are invited to apply for a $900 per year scholarship to be awarded by the NCOA. Attention senior girls: the Woman s Club of Sanford will award scholarships based upon GPA, community service, values, career goals, and financial need.

The American Legion Auxiliary will award several scholarships to students who qualify in a variety of categories including children of veterans who served in the Armed Forces or members of the American Legion or Auxiliary. Seniors, the Scholarship for Military Children was created to recognize military families contributions to the readiness of U.S. armed forces and the commissary s role in the military community. At least one $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student at each commissary. Attention seniors who excel in science: the Project Weather Scholarship is for $1000 and will be awarded to nine central Florida seniors by a meteorologist on News 13. You can pick up an application for the scholarship in the college room. All entries must be postmarked by the March 24 th deadline. Seniors, the Sanford Seminole Art Association (SSAA) will award two $500 scholarships to seniors from Seminole County Public Schools. Applicants must have taken visual arts classes in high school and plan to study visual arts in college. Applications are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 27 th. Attention freshmen and sophomores: The Ayn Rand Institute is sponsoring an essay contest based upon an essay written on one of three topics comparing Anthem and The Fountainhead. Seniors, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to students of Hispanic heritage based upon academic achievement and financial need. Application deadline is March 30 th, and you can get more information about applying in the college room. Attention seniors: The SeaWorld Environmental Scholarship is available to Florida high school seniors who have a GPA or 3.0 or higher. Attention senior girls: The Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority is offering a $500 scholarship to a senior girl planning to enter the field of education. Applications are available in the college room. Seniors, the Phil Cloninger Memorial Scholarship was established by the Oviedo/Winter Springs Regional Chamber of Commerce to be awarded to a deserving local high school senior. The application for the $2,000 scholarship is in the college room and must be submitted by March 17 th. Attention seniors: The Central Florida Hotel and Lodging Association is offering a full-ride scholarship to a student planning to pursue a degree at the UCF Rosen College of Hospitality. Applications are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 3 rd. Seniors who have been identified as being legally blind are eligible for a scholarship awarded by the Visual Aid Volunteers of Florida, Inc. Applications for the scholarship are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 30 th. Attention all students: The Americanism Essay Contest is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary and is open to all high school students. Awards range from $2000-$10,000 for each grade level based upon your essay. Entries must be submitted by March 10 th, and details are available in the college room. Seniors, the Lake Mary Heathrow Festival of the Arts Scholarship awards $500 to artistically talented Seminole County seniors. Applications are available in the college room and must be submitted by March 30 th. The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War awards two $2,500 scholarships annually to deserving seniors. To apply, male students must be a current member of the organization and female applicants must be the daughter or granddaughter of a current member and a member of an affiliated organization. 9 Attention all students grades 9-12: You are invited to participate in an art contest in which your artwork expresses patriotism. The contest is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, and awards ranges from $500 to $10,000. Find out more about the contest in the college room. Deadline to submit your artwork is March 31 st. Seniors, the Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor her legacy as an advocate for youth and supporter of community service. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA, demonstrate leadership in community service or other extracurricular activities, and have a combined family income of less than $100,000. Applications for the scholarship are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 31 st. Seniors, the Omega Psi Phi fraternity Friendship Foundation will award scholarships of $500 to seniors in Orange and Seminole counties based upon GPA, community service and leadership. Seniors, the Kiwanis Club of Oviedo/Winter Springs will award a scholarship to a local high school student who has at least a 3.0 grade point average. Seniors, the Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Fund will award One Full-ride scholarship valued at $48,000 to the Rollins College Evening Emerging Leaders program. Attention seniors, University Behavioral Center will award a $500 scholarship to a senior who has dealt with mental health challenges either personally or with someone close to them, whether it be a friend or family member. Seniors, the Kobrin Family Scholarship is a one-time scholarship of $2,000 awarded to a student who will attend UCF. Financial need, GPA, and test scores are considered, and preference is given to students who are of the Jewish faith. 10 Seniors, the American Nuclear Society will award four $1,000 scholarships to students planning to pursue a degree in nuclear engineering. Applications are on file in the college room. Attention female African-American seniors: the Sanford Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is offering scholarships to deserving students committed to pursuing a higher education. Seniors, the Rotary Club of Winter Springs Charitable Foundation will award the Service Above Self scholarship to a deserving senior. Applications are available in the college room and must be postmarked by the March 11 th deadline. Seniors, the Seminole County Historical Society will award the Carolyn Bistline History Scholarship to a Seminole County senior planning to pursue an undergraduate degree with a concentration in history. The scholarship is valued at $500, and the application is available in the college room. Deadline to apply is March 15 th. Attention seniors: Collins Dental is offering a $500 scholarship to an Oviedo High School senior who is interested in pursuing a career in the dental or medical field. Attention all students, you are invited to enter an essay contest sponsored by the American Foreign Service Association (AFSA). Attention seniors, you are encouraged to apply for the Oviedo High School PTSA Scholarship. Scholarships will be awarded on Senior Awards Night to deserving members of the OHS graduating class who are student members of PTSA, have a 2.5 or higher unweighted GPA, and have proof of acceptance to a college or vocational school. Seniors, a $1000 scholarship will be awarded to an OHS senior by the Oviedo High School Reunion Graduating Classes of who want to give back to current students. Attention seniors: the Oviedo Historical Society will again award a $500 scholarship to an Oviedo High School student with a special interest in history. The Central Florida Hotel and Lodging Association will award a scholarship of $1,000 per year for four years to a student with a 3.0 GPA and a financial need. Attention seniors interested in a career in real estate: The Florida Realtors Education Foundation is offering a scholarship to the college of your choice. Applicants will be evaluated on their academic achievement, financial need, sincerity of interest in the real estate field, and contributions to family, school, and community. Attention all students grades 9-12: The American Legion is offering several scholarships to individuals who qualify in various categories. If you are an Eagle Scout, a senior JROTC cadet, or a direct descendant of a veteran who served in the armed services, you could receive up to $2,500 in scholarship money. There are also additional scholarships awarded based on oratorical and art contests as well as

12 a general scholarship offered to seniors. Deadline to apply for each of these American Legion Scholarships is March 1 st, and you can receive more information in the college room. Seniors, if you are the child or grandchild of an active duty or retired member of the Marine Corps, you may qualify one of a number of scholarships offered by the Marine Corps Foundation. Seniors, the Lions Youth Exchange Scholarship is an award of $1,000 to deserving high school seniors. The scholarships may be used for further education, educational seminars, or educational travel. Deadline to apply is March 6 th, and applications are available in the college room. Seniors, the Oviedo-Winter Springs Lions Club will award a book scholarship of $1000 to an Oviedo High School senior. Applications are available in the college room and must be submitted by March 6 th. Attention Eagle Scouts: The American Legion is once again sponsoring the Eagle Scout of the Year Scholarship. Winners will receive a $10,000 scholarship, and runner-up will be granted $2,500. Applications are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 1 st. Attention seniors interested in pursuing a career in graphic communications, printing technology, printing management, or publishing: The Print and Graphic Scholarship Foundation provides scholarships based upon academic performance, essay-based questions, and letter of recommendation. Last year over 200 students were provided with support totaling over $400,000. Visit the college room to obtain more information, and the deadline to apply is March 1 st. Seniors, the Walmart Associate Scholarship will be awarded to a student who is employed at Walmart and has a financial need. You can learn more about the scholarship by visiting the college room. Deadline to apply is March 1 st. Seniors, the Woman s Club of Winter Park will award scholarships to students based upon their academic record and financial need. 13 Attention seniors: The Historical Society of Central Florida is pleased to announce the annual essay competition for the Scott Harris Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is for $2,500 and will be awarded on the basis of an essay about how community history shapes people s lives. Applications are available in the college room and the deadline to apply is March 3 rd. Seniors, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Conference at All Souls Catholic Church in Sanford will award $1,000 scholarships to two students from schools located in the Diocese of Orlando. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, school and community activities, and personal qualities. Applications are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 3 rd. Seniors, the Scholarships for DREAMers will be awarded on the basis of minimum GPA of 2.5, test scores, community service, recommendations, and financial need. Information about the DREAMers Scholarships is available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 8 th. Attention seniors interested in attending an Art Institute School next year: The National Art Honor Society Scholarship will be awarded to students based upon submission of six slides of your original artwork and a written statement describing your career goals. You can obtain more information in the college room, and the deadline for applications is March 8 th. Attention all students interested in receiving scholarships for college: The months of February and March are important times for applying for scholarships. Many of the scholarships awarded by local clubs and organizations are offered during this time, and several are offered specifically to Oviedo High School students. Attention seniors planning to attend Seminole State College: If you have at least a 3.0 GPA, you may be eligible for an Academic or Bright Futures Companion Scholarship to SSC. Visit the college room to pick up your application which must be submitted by the March 1 st deadline. Attention senior girls: Support Our Scholars is an organization that supports disadvantaged young women with extraordinary potential by providing a $10,000 stipend, trained mentor support, dorm room provision, and a laptop computer. Applications for the program are available in the college room and the deadline to apply is February 24 th.

14 Seniors, the Spectrum Sports Scholarship with a value of $2,500 will be awarded on the basis of an essay explaining How being a student-athlete helped to shape who you are and prepared you for the future. Applicants must have an unweighted GPA of 3.5 and must have participated in athletics while in high school. Seniors, the Friends of 440 Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to deserving students who lack the economic ability to continue their education beyond high school. Details about how to apply are available in the college room. Deadline to apply is February 28 th. Attention seniors: The Seminole County Council of PTAs/PTSAs will award scholarships on the basis of financial need and academic performance. Applications are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is February 28 th. Seniors, the Regions Riding Forward Scholarship Essay Contest will award $5,000 scholarships to 15 high school seniors across the US based upon an essay about an African-American who has inspired and motivated you. Information about the contest is available in the college room, and the deadline to submit your essay is February 28 th. Senior girls interested in majoring in a science field in college are invited to apply for the Women in Science Scholarship. This $1000 scholarship is awarded to an Oviedo High School senior girl by two local dentists. Applications are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 1 st. Attention all seniors: The Oviedo Woman s Club Scholarship will be awarded to one or more Oviedo High School students. You must have a 3.0 or higher cumulative, weighted GPA, and please note that male students are also encouraged to apply for the scholarship. Stop by the college room to pick up your application. Deadline is March 1 st. Attention seniors planning to attend Seminole State College: The Wayne M. Densch Scholarship of $1000 per semester for two years will be awarded to qualified first generation, first time in college students who a demonstrate financial need. The priority deadline for applying for this scholarship is March 1 st, and you can pick up your application in the college room.

15 Attention seniors planning to attend FSU, UF, FAMU, FGCU, TCC, or SFCC: The Southern Scholarship Foundation offers scholarships to students with a financial need who are accepted into these universities and community colleges. The priority deadline is March 1 st, but applications are accepted year-round. Information on applying is available in the college room. Seniors, the Tall Clubs International Foundation will award scholarships of up to $1000 each for students who qualify under the height requirement of 5 10 for women and 6 2 for men. Deadline for applications for the scholarship is March 1 st, and you can obtain information about applying in the college room. Attention seniors: The Simon Youth Foundation established the Community Scholarship to meet the needs of students in communities that have Simon shopping centers. Awards are valued at up to $2,500 each and will be based on financial need, academic record, leadership in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals, and an outside appraisal. Applications for the scholarship are available in the college room. Deadline is March 1 st.
