1 March 2013 Scholarship Bulletin The following scholarships are currently available. If you have any questions see Ms Loya, in the counseling center. To complete your scholarship research, computers are available in our college center by the counseling center and the library. Check monthly for updated bulletins. NAME: ABBOTT & FENNER DUE: June 14, 2013 CRITERIA: High school junior or senior. Must write an essay on one of two topics. Apply online: NAME: AES ENGINEERS DUE: October 4, 2013 CRITERIA: Must be senior planning to attend college and pursue any field of study. Must submit 1000 word essay in response to one of two questions. Apply online: NAME: AIR FORCE ROTC - SDSU DUE: Open AMOUNT: Full tuition CRITERIA: Must be junior or senior who is a U.S. citizen before field training. Call for more info. Apply online: NAME: ALPHA PI SIGMA SORORITY, SDSU CRITERIA: Must be a Latina senior who plans to attend SDSU and has a minimum 2.5 GPA. See Ms. Loya for an application or the OHS website. NAME: AMERICAN LEGION POST 434 CHULA VISTA CRITERIA: High school senior in the Sweetwater District with a minimum 3.0 g.p.a. See Ms. Loya for an application. NAME: ANIMATION CAREER REVIEW ASPIRING ANIMATION PROFESSIONAL DUE: June 1, 2013 CRITERIA: Must be a senior with strong academic achievement planning to pursue an animation related degree. Students must submit essay. More information & entry form online: NAME: ASIAN PACIFIC FUND 20,000 CRITERIA: The Asian Pacific Fund offers 14 scholarship programs for high school seniors, with varying eligibility criteria. More info. & entry form: NAME: ASSOCIATION OF RAZA EDUCATORS (ARE) DUE: M arch 15, 2013 AMOUNT: up to $ 5,000 CRITERIA: Must be a senior who qualifies for AB540 (undocumented), is able to demonstrate financial need and a commitment to their community (community service). 2 NAME: AYN RAND DUE: March 20 (for 9 th & 10 th grade students) & April 26, (for 11 th & 12 th grade students) 2013 AMOUNT: $50 $10,000 CRITERIA: High school students who are willing to write an essay (600 to 1,600 words) on one of the topics provided (on the Ayn Rand books: Anthem or The Fountainhead). NAME: BRAD FOWLER MEMORIAL DUE: April 29, 2013 AMOUNT: $5,000 (5 winners will be selected) CRITERIA: High school senior who will attend college, has overcome obstacles associated with drugs or alcohol (someone you know or are close to), has athletic & academic achievement, and leadership ability. See Ms. Loya for an app. NAME: CABE (CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION FOR BILINGUAL EDUCATION) SD/SOUTH COUNTY CHAPTER (approximately 10 scholarships will be awarded) CRITERIA: High school bilingual senior who has overcome a hardship/adversity & has a GPA. Apply online: NAME: CABRILLO CIVIC CLUBS OF CALIFORNIA CRITERIA: High school senior of Portuguese descent who is a US citizen or permanent resident with a minimum 3.5 GPA and involvement in at least 3 extra-curricular activities. 3 NAME: CALIFORNIA WINE GRAPE GROWERS FOUNDATION (CWGGF) AMOUNT: $2,000 - $8,000 CRITERIA: Must be a senior whose parent(s) or guardian(s) are Vineyard employees of a California Wine Grape Grower. See Ms. Loya for an application or download an application online: NAME: CESAR CHAVEZ ESSAY CONTEST AMOUNT: $200 - $1,000 plus a laptop computer CRITERIA: Any high school student who is willing to write a 2 page ( word) typed essay in response to the essay prompt question. See Ms. Loya for an application and essay question, the OHS website or go to: NAME: CHANGE A LIFE FOUNDATION DUE: March 14, 2013 AMOUNT: $5,000 CRITERIA: Must be a senior w/ 3.5 GPA min., min SAT score of 1500 or min ACT score of 21, be enrolled in &/or have passed AP courses, have completed a min. of 40 hours of community service and able to demonstrate financial need. NAME: HEARTHSTONE HOUSING FOUNDATION DUE: March 30, ,000 CRITERIA: High school student (age years old) who resides at a Hearthstone Housing Foundation property OR is a resident in a county where a Hearthstone property is located. 4 NAME: KOHL S KIDS WHO CARE AMOUNT: $50 10,000 (multiple winners) CRITERIA: Any high school student who has contributed to his/her community in a significant way (for example: organized a food drive, cleaned up a park or helped a younger child learn how to read, etc.) Volunteer efforts must have occurred in the last year. Winners chosen based on community project, benefits and outcome. Nominations/applications may be submitted online: NAME: MARIACHI SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION (SUHSD)/BALLET FOLKLORICO SCHOLARSHIP DUE: March 11, 2013 AMOUNT: $750 3,000 CRITERIA: High school senior w/ min. 3.0 GPA who has been involved in a Mariachi or Ballet Folklorico Program for at least one year. NAME: MIRAMAR OFFICERS WIVES CLUB DUE: April 6, 2013 CRITERIA: High school senior, with outstanding academic achievement who is a dependent of an active duty Navy, Marine Corps or Coast Guard member currently attached to MCAS Miramar or who was attached to MCAS Miramar at the time of retirement or death.
