You should also research deadlines for applications, FAFSA information, and check to see if they require the CSS/Financial Aid Profile. 3 3 Union County Christmas "Parade Princess" Scholarship Each Union County Public High School will nominate one senior candidate to represent their school in the parade. This candidate should reflect leadership skills, academic excellence and commitment to community service. Judges will interview candidates on October 26. The parade princess will be crowned and awarded the Alex Kahle Memorial Scholarship on November 2. If you would like to be considered for nomination, please submit an interest form to Ms. Cole by the deadline. Forms can be found in guidance. Deadline: October 4, AES Engineering Scholarship AES Engineering Solutions is awarding a $500 scholarship on the basis of character. This award is available to high school seniors. To apply, students must submit a 500 to 1000 word essay in response to the following question: When you look back on your life in 30 years, what would it take for you to consider your life successful? What relationships or accomplishments will be important on this journey? Essays can be submitted to: scholarships@aesengineers.com. Students do not have to take engineering classes to be eligible. Deadline: October 6, U.S. Senate Youth Scholarship Must be interested in pursuing a career in public service; must be currently serving in an elected or appointed capacity in student government or a related organization (class president, student body, etc.); be a permanent resident of the U.S.; be currently enrolled in a N.C. high school; and have at least one parent/guardian that is a legal resident of N.C. An application, an essay, two letters of recommendation, and a digital presentation are required. Amount: Not specified. Deadline: Written essay must be mailed with a postmark date on or before October 8, The digital presentation must be uploaded no later than 11:59 pm on October 8, DAR Good Citizens Scholarship This scholarship is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. This is open to all seniors that are in good standing with their school. The student selected as the DAR Good Citizen must possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. The student selected as the DAR Good Citizen is then eligible for the scholarship contest. The scholarship contest consists of two parts. Part 1 requires the student to describe how he or she tried to manifest the qualities of a good citizen. Part II requires the student to complete a timed essay that is administered by a faculty member. The student has 2 hours to complete the essay and the essay topic is not known until the day of administration. This entry will be judged by independent, non-dar judges. The winning entry is then advanced to the state and national level of judging. The scholarship committee will choose which students to nominate. If you'd like to be considered for nomination please fill out an interest form and return it to Ms. Cole by the deadline. Amount: $250 for state-level winners; $500 for national winners; $5,000 for two top national winners. Deadline: Interest forms are due to Ms. Cole by October 9.

4 4 NFAA's Young Arts Program Student must demonstrate artistic experience in one of the following art forms: cinematic arts, dance, design arts, jazz, music, photography, theater, visual arts, voice, and writing. Amount: Up to $10,000. Deadline: October 13, Shelton National Leadership Scholarship at NC State Students must demonstrate leadership experience and potential; evidence of personal character and integrity; orientation toward community service; commitment towards personal growth; commitment to physical fitness and wellness; understanding of and interest in the program; and academic eligibility. Amount: $10,000 annually to cover tuition and fees, housing, and more. An additional $2,000 for student leadership enrichment experiences. Deadline: October 15, Goodnight Scholars Program To be considered for this program, the student must be a North Carolina resident; have an adjusted gross income up to $100,000 and demonstrate financial need (confirmed by FAFSA); select a STEM education major; demonstrate a history of exceptional academic performance (typical recipients of this award are in the top 2% of their graduating class, score above 1450 on the new SAT and/or score above a 32 on the ACT, and have at least a 3.9 unweighted and/or 4.8 weighted GPA). Students must also submit a general application to NC State University. By December 23, 2017, the program will issue approximately 700 invitations to prospective students that opens up the Goodnight Scholars Program online application. Students who do not meet the above criteria but still want to be considered for the program can self-nominate. The self-nomination process will be open from October 15 through December 1. Amount: Tuition and fees, housing, and meals up to $19,500 per academic year. Deadline: General application to NC State must be submitted by October 15, 2017 VFW Voice of Democracy Applicants must record an audio essay (3-5 minutes long) discussing the topic "American History: Our Hope for the Future". Applicants must fill out an application and submit that and the audio recording to their local VFW post. Amount: $30,000. Deadline: October 17, Horatio Alger State Scholarship Student must be enrolled full time as a high school senior and have plans to enter college in the U.S. in the fall following graduation; exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor's degree at a public or private institution; demonstrate a financial need ($55,000 or lower adjusted gross family income is required); be involved in co-curricular and community service activities; display integrity and perseverance overcoming adversity; maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0; and be a U.S. citizen. Amount: $10,000. Deadline: October 25, 2017.

Belk Scholarship at Davidson College This scholarship is open to students who demonstrate academic excellence, purposeful engagement in the classroom, in student and civic organizations, on the athletic field, or in the arts. Belk Scholars also exhibit a commitment to the local and global communities. Students who are interested in this scholarship have to be nominated by a school official. To be considered for nomination please submit an interest form to Ms. Cole by the deadline listed below. Thirty students will be invited to Belk Celebration and Selection Weekend, March 22-24, Class of 2022 Belk Scholars will be announced by April 1, Amount: An annual renewable scholarship valued at $69,903 and two special study stipends (up to $3000 per stipend) to pursue international study and other enrichment opportunities. Deadline: Interest forms are due to Ms. Cole by Oct. 25. Students interested in this scholarship must also apply to Davidson by December 1 (This does not imply Early Decision commitment). U.S. Bank Scholarship Program Complete all eight Financial Genius for Life education modules, in addition to the application. Amount: Up to $20,000. Deadline: October 27, Coca-Cola Scholars Program Student must be a current high school senior and planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution. Amount: Varies. Deadline: October 31, Ron Brown Scholar Program Applicants must be African-American, excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. Applicants must also be a U.S. citizen or hold a permanent resident visa card. This program is looking for the most talented and economically-challenged high school seniors who demonstrate a keen interest in public service, community engagement, business entrepreneurship, and global citizenship. Amount: $10,000. Deadline: November 1, Cheatham-White Scholarship at NC A&T University This merit-based scholarship is available to students who would be a competitive applicant to North Carolina A&T. Student must also be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; be on course to graduate high school in the spring prior to college admission; have a cumulative GPA of at least 4.0 and a minimum SAT score of 1280 (new) or 1200 (old) or 28 on the ACT; and show exceptional qualities of character and leadership, be significantly involved in extracurricular activities and demonstrate a strong commitment to service. Student must be nominated by a school official or through selfnomination. Amount: Full tuition, student fees, housing and meals, textbooks, a laptop, supplies, travel and personal expenses. As well as summers of fully funded enrichment and networking opportunities that may include international travel and study. Deadline: November 1, 2017

6 6 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards This award recognizes students who are involved in community service. If you have completed any community service within the past year, you qualify for this award. If you want to be considered for this award you will need to fill out an online application. The scholarship committee will then choose one or more top applicants to be honored. One of these applicants will then be eligible for the $1,000 statelevel award, a silver medallion, and an all-expense-paid trip with a parent/guardian to Washington, D.C. Deadline: Online application must be completed by November 7, Robertson Scholars Program at UNC Chapel Hill and Duke Student must apply for undergraduate admission to Duke and/or UNC Chapel Hill the same year they apply to this program. The program is looking for students who deomonstrate purposeful leadership, intellectual curiosity, strength of character, and a collaborative spirit. Amount: Tuition and fees, room and board. Deadline: November 15, Scholarships for Nonresidents at the University of South Carolina Each scholarship has its own criteria. Please visit this link to view each scholarship. Amount: $500 - $30,000. Deadline: November 15, Scholarships at Appalachian State University Each scholarship has its own criteria. Please visit this link to view each scholarship. Amount: Varies. Deadline: November 15, The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship at UNC Chapel Hill This scholarship is based largely on written work submitted by the candidates. Students who write poetry, fiction, plays, literary non-fiction (personal narratives, memoir, travel and nature essays, literary journalism, belles-lettres) are eligible. Multiple genre submissions are also encouraged. The application process requires the submission of up to 50 pages of prose, 40 pages in poetry, or 60 in play writing. Students submitting work in multiple genres should submit between pages of original work. In addition to completing the application, candidates will submit a 500-word personal essay entitled "Why I Write". Amount: Full tuition and fees. Deadline: Students applying for this scholarship must submit an application for admission to UNC Chapel Hill by October 15 AND submit a scholarship application by November 15
