1 2016 SENIOR AWARDS CRITERIA & APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Below you will find a brief description of each Senior Award, Grant or Scholarship that is being offered, as well as the criteria and application requirements for each. Students should carefully review this information and indicate (X) on page 4 & 5 of the Sr. Awards Application each award you would like to be considered for. Students will be considered for every award they apply for if they meet the criteria. Various selection committees will review the applications for each award and choose the recipients. Please be sure to include any supplemental information that is required when you submit your Senior Awards Application. Supplements are available in the Main Office. 1) AMERICAN LEGION POST 399 AWARD This award is given in recognition of the possession of high qualities of courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship and service. All these are necessary for the preservation and protection of the fundamental institutions of our government and the advancement to society. 2) BRAD HAMILTON BOOK MEMORIAL GRANT This annual grant is awarded to an Upper Bucks Technical School senior who plans to enter the workforce or who is pursuing higher education in a vocational/technical program. This grant may be renewable in if the applicant demonstrates financial need for tools, work clothing, and other work related or higher education expenses. Supplement A is required. Supplement A is available in the Main Office. 3) BRIDGETON ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION DESMOND MULLIGAN SCHOLARSHIP This grant is presented annually by the Bridgeton Athletic Association in memory of their friend and valued community supporter, Desmond Mulligan. This award is determined by a faculty committee, with preference given to a Vo Tech student and is based on the following criteria: a. Must be a resident of Bridgeton Township, or have participated in the Bridgeton Athletic Association for at least one year. b. Must continue their education in the areas of Agriculture, Horticulture, or Environmental Studies. c. Must demonstrate generosity, volunteerism, and involvement in the community. 4) BRIDGETON ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION FRED BITTENMASTER III MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP In honor of its founding member, Fred Bittenmaster III, the Bridgeton Athletic Association annually presents this grant to a senior student determined by a faculty committee to be most representative of the following: a. Must have participated for at least one year in the Bridgeton Athletic Association. b. Must have lettered in either baseball or softball at least once at Palisades. c. Must continue education after graduation. d. Traits of generosity, volunteerism and involvement in community. 5) BTSA COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP FOR ECOSYSTEM STUDIES Bridgeton Township Sportsmen s Association, Inc. offers a scholarship to one student who enters higher learning for a career that maintains and improves the ecosystem. 6) C. PRESTON SCOBORIA ATHLETIC/ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD SCHOLARSHIP This Grant is awarded to one male & one female who have demonstrated outstanding athletic & academic achievement & determination. Preference given to students who have participated in boys' or girls' track, cross country or wrestling. EITHER the recipients have participated in at least 6 seasons; 2 of the seasons must be in either cross country, wrestling or track & student must have earned 3 varsity letters OR student who has participated in either cross country, wrestling, or track for 4 seasons and has earned at least 3 varsity letters.
2 In addition, the following criteria must be met: a) Maintains a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 b) Must be accepted to a 4 year college or university. 7) COOPER MECHANICAL INC. SCHOLARSHIP This award will be given to a graduating senior who will pursue a certificate or degree from a technical college/vocational school. Major concentration can be of the student's choosing including, but not limited to, careers such as plumbing, HVAC, electrical, cosmetology, carpentry, health care, criminal justice, and culinary arts. 8) CRAIG T. STAATS GOOD CITIZENSHIP AWARD Sponsored by State Representative Craig Staats, a scholarship is presented annually to the senior student determined by the faculty to be most representative of the following criteria: a. Ranked in upper 1/4 of class. b. Active in community service. 9) E.M. NICHOLAS GRANT This grant is being awarded in honor of E. M. Nicholas, a long time resident of the district who was concerned about the environment. This award is also to encourage young people to be interested in agriculture or environmental issues, all in his memory. This grant is given to a senior pursuing a career in the area of agriculture or preservation of the environment. Recipient does not need to be a college preparatory student. 10) JOHN JAMES QUINBY MEMORIAL CASH GRANT This grant is given to a senior that meets the following criteria: a. Pursuing post high school education b. Demonstrated leadership c. Participated in high school athletics in their junior and senior year. d. Contributed 25 hours of non mandatory school and/or community volunteer service e. Maintained a grade point average of 2.5 or above. f. Preference given to a student who has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout or Senior Girl Scout and/or worked or aided the disabled. 11) MARJORIE MILLER BERGEY COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD This award will be a one time grant given by the Class of Consideration for this award shall be without reference to race, sex, or creed. The award shall be used to pursue a post high school education program. This grant will be given to a student who meets the following criteria: a. A senior who has shown exemplary leadership, character, and dedication in the pursuit of community service b. Must have attended Palisades High School as a full time student during his/her entire sophomore, junior, and senior years c. The recipient is expected to attend the PAA Alumni Banquet on June 18, 2016 where he/she will be recognized. Supplemental information required: The candidate shall present 1 letter of reference to the selection committee from the leader/s of the specific community service organization with which the candidate participated. 12) PALISADES ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP
3 These scholarships are presented annually by the Palisades Alumni Association to three (3) graduating seniors determined by a faculty committee to be the most representative of the following criteria: a. Character b. Achievement c. Service to School/Community d. Future Goals **Recipients are expected to attend the PAA banquet on June 18, 2016 where he/she will be recognized. 13) PALISADES ALUMNI ASSOCIATION HELEN LINES NAST JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP This monetary award is given to a senior by the Palisades Alumni Association. Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria: a. A senior who has shown leadership, exemplary character, achievement, and dedication to the production of the yearbook or school newspaper. b. Is planning to major in journalism or media in a post high school education program. c. Attended Palisades High School as a full time student during his/her entire sophomore, junior and senior years. **Recipient is expected to attend the PAA banquet on June 18, 2016 where he/she will be recognized. 14) PALISADES ALUMNI ASSOCIATION JOHN BLAIR ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP This monetary award is given to a senior male by the Palisades Alumni Association and may be used for future education or in any way deemed positive by the recipient. This award is determined by a committee, which includes the athletic director, and is based on the following criteria. a. Must have lettered in at least two sports in their senior year (this includes managers who have lettered.) b. Attended Palisades High School as a full time student during their junior and senior year. **Recipient is expected to attend the PAA banquet on June 18, 2016 where he/she will be recognized. 15) PALISADES ALUMNI ASSOCIATION STEPHANIE STONEBACK ZISKO ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP This monetary award is given to a senior female by the Palisades Alumni Association and may be used for future education or in any way deemed positive by the recipient. This award is determined by a committee, which includes the athletic director, and is based on the following criteria. a. Must have lettered in at least two sports in their senior year (this includes managers who have lettered.) b. Attended Palisades High School as a full time student during their junior and senior year. * *Recipient is expected to attend the PAA banquet on June 18, 2016 where he/she will be recognized. 16) PALISADES COMMUNITY CHORUS DONNA PARRIS SCHOLARSHIP The Palisades Community Chorus offers a cash grant to a Palisades senior who intends to pursue Music as a major or minor course of study at a two or four year institution upon graduation from high school. This grant is given in memory of Donna Parris, who founded the Palisades Community Chorus. 17) PALISADES COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP The Palisades Community Foundation offers three awards. Each recipient must: 1. Have a GPA of Be a citizen in good standing at school and in the community. 3. Completed 25 hours of community service at a recognized organization that supports community wellness, education or the arts. For example, a local hospital, fire house, YMCA.
4 ** Needs a recommendation letter from a supervisor must accompany the application. 4. Must have an acceptance letter or other confirmation from a college or community college or technical training program. Supplemental information required: 500 word essay answering the question How has your service experience shaped your plans for the future? Supplemental form is available in the Main Office. 18) PALISADES EDUCATION ASSOCIATION ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIPS The Palisades Education Association presents two scholarships annually: Applicants must show: a. Character. b. Academic achievement. c. Intended major One scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior pursuing ANY full time post high school educational program; One scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior pursuing a career in education 19) PALISADES EDUCATION SUPPORT PERSONNEL ASSOCIATION CASH GRANT The Palisades Education Support Personnel Association, whose members include the district s custodians, food service, maintenance, technology, secretaries and instructional & non instructional assistants are pleased to present their annual cash grant. This award is being presented to a male and a female student who exemplify the attributes of a good employee. 20) PALISADES HIGH SCHOOL BAND BOOSTERS SCHOLARSHIP The Palisades High School Band Boosters awards one recipient who participated in marching band or color guard and who has a GPA of 3.0 or above. The winner intends to continue his/her involvement in music after high school including but not limited to participation in community or worship music, majoring/minoring in music in college, or participating in musical ensembles at the college or university level. 21) PALISADES YOUTH FOOTBALL / YOUTH FOOTBALL CHEERLEADER AWARDS This grant is presented annually by the Palisades Youth Football Association to two seniors (1 football player, 1 cheerleader) that meet the following criteria: a. Must have participated at least one year in the Palisades Youth Football Association. b. Must have lettered at least once in football or cheerleading at Palisades High School. c. Must continue education after graduation. d. Must be ranked in the upper 1/3 of class 22) PENN COMMUNITY BANK AWARD This monetary award is presented to a student that plans on majoring in a financial field such as business, accounting or math. 23) PLUMSTEAD LIONS CLUB AWARD The Plumstead Lions Club presents a monetary award to a graduating senior who has excelled in community service. 24) POLITICAL ACTION AWARD
5 This award was established by Paul Clymer. The recipient of this award has taken it upon themselves to better their school and community through political activism. This activism can be through community and/or school organizations (such as Student Government) and must encompass the spirit of giving back. The recipient has perpetuated change for the greater good and has embodied a democratic spirit while doing so. 25) PRINCIPAL S PURPLE & GOLD AWARD This grant will be awarded to the student who demonstrates a strong work ethic and has positively impacted Palisades High School. This student is a role model for others in their academic performance, citizenship, and loyalty to Palisades High School. 26) QUAKERTOWN ROTARY CLUB SERVICE AWARD This award is offered to a graduating senior who has excelled in performance of community service. To qualify for this award, interested students must list all experiences they have had volunteering and working on service oriented projects. 27) RACHAEL ANN ANDERSON SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is given each year the recipient attends college. Specific criteria for this award are: a. Ranked in top 1/3 of class b. Demonstrates academic excellence in English or the arts c. Must attend a 4 year college d. Active in church and/or community 28) RIEGELSVILLE AMERICAN LEGION POST 950 SCHOLARSHIP The Riegelsville American Legion Post 950 honors three deserving students who fill one of the below criteria. These students will receive a monetary scholarship for secondary education. The recipients are required to attend the Riegelsville Memorial Day Parade where the awards will be presented to them. 1. Student had a parent or stepparent killed in action or MIA. 2. Student has a parent or stepparent currently in the Armed Forces either on Active Duty or in the Reserves or National Guard. 3. Student has a parent or stepparent who are veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. 29) S. SCOTT HAHN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The S. Scott Hahn Memorial Scholarship was established to honor community leader, coach, and father Scott Hahn for his work within the Durham Community. The award offers educational funding for students seeking higher education who exhibit the qualities that Scott possessed. This monetary award will be presented to a senior who meets the following criteria: a. Student must reside in Durham Township/Participated in Durham AA. b. Student must exhibit community awareness and service. c. Student must attend an institute of higher learning. 30) SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION HIGH SCHOOL CITIZENSHIP AWARD Washington Crossing Chapter of Sons of American Revolution presents an award to a senior who exemplifies good citizenship by their conduct in school and community activities, shows character, personal integrity & demonstrates academic accomplishment. 31) SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP LIONS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP The Springfield Township Lions Club will award three separate scholarships
6 31A. Lion Thomas W. Free Cash Grant will be presented to a student who will be attending a four year college or university 31B. Lion Edward A. Baumgartner Cash Grant will be presented to a student who will be attending a two year community college 31C. Springfield Twp. Lions Club Cash Grant will be presented to a student who will be attending a post secondary vocational/technical school. Supplemental information required for any of these scholarships: 2 essays 1. One essay must specifically detail examples of the applicant s community service both inside and outside of school. 2. One essay must describe how the student intends to use the money if he / she were selected as one of the three recipients. 32) UPPER BUCKS YMCA AWARD This monetary award is presented by the Upper Bucks YMCA to a senior that meets the following criteria: a. Must have been a member of the Palisades community for at least three years. b. Must have volunteered in an organization which serves youth under the age of 13. c. Interested in a career in Social Services or a related field. d. Must demonstrate leadership skills 33) WILLIAM STANLEY AWARD This award is presented in memory of William Bill Stanley. Bill graduated from Palisades in While at Palisades, he lettered in track and cross country and set many school and league records in both sports. Upon graduation from Palisades, Bill matriculated at Lafayette College in Easton. There he again lettered in track and cross country and became a premier runner on the college level. After completing his junior year, Bill met an untimely death in an automobile accident in June Preston Scoboria, Bill s high school coach, and friends from the Palisades Community contributed money to establish a memorial award. The award is now funded by Bill s family. Each year the Palisades varsity coaches choose one recipient for this award. The award is given to the varsity athlete who most exhibits the qualities of courage, humility and integrity. 34) WEHRUNG S LUMBER AND HOME CENTER BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP Wehrung s Lumber and Home Center, Inc offers a scholarship to an outstanding student who plans to pursue a post high school business management position PALISADES SENIOR AWARDS APPLICATION INFORMATION Distributed on 4/1/16 ALL 2016 GRADUATES ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR ANY AWARD FOR WHICH THEY MEET THE CRITERIA/REQUIREMENTS ABOVE. Students who are chosen to receive awards will receive invitations to the Sr. Awards Ceremony, which will take place on Monday, June 6, 7 p.m. in the Dr. Francis V. Barnes Auditorium. ALL COMPLETED 2016 SR. AWARDS APPLICATIONS ARE DUE IN THE MAIN OFFICE BY MONDAY, APRIL 2:30 PM (NO LATE APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED)
