1 Oyster Bay High School December 2017 Newsletter INFORMATION ON ACCESSING FINANCIAL AID The information provided below will assist you in obtaining financial aid. Some colleges require that students complete financial aid applications before they may qualify for scholarships. The main way for students to secure money and qualify for scholarships for college is by applying for financial aid. The FSA ID is a secure username and password that you will use to log into the FAFSA. You may create your FSA ID any time prior to starting the financial aid application. Visit to create your FSA ID. If you don't have one by the time you fill out your FAFSA, you will be prompted to apply for one. You may apply for financial aid by completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form at and the New York State TAP (Tuition Assistance Program) form online beginning on October 1 st of your senior year. New York State (NYS) Residents attending NYS schools will have the option to link directly to the TAP application from the FAFSA submission confirmation page. If you exited the FAFSA before selecting this option, you can complete the application after NYS HESC (New York State Higher Education Services Corporation) receives your FAFSA data (three days). HESC will send you an or postcard notifying you to complete the TAP application online. If you did not select the FAFSA link to TAP at the end of the FAFSA application, you may visit the TAP web page at *If you would like to obtain a financial aid estimate, you may visit the FAFSA page at and follow the links for the FAFSA 4Caster. SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION Please be aware that scholarship scams exist. We do not recommend that you use your own money for a scholarship program. You can find scholarships through: Checking the website of the college/s you hope to attend. Visit college websites and look under the Financial Aid/ section to find scholarship opportunities Use scholarship search engines. A list of websites is provided in this bulletin. Ask family members to find out if the companies they work for provide scholarships/monetary awards. 1

If you need a letter of recommendation, transcripts, etc. as part of the scholarship application, be sure to allow time for the processing of these materials. Award Information/ Requirements/Website Deadline American Heritage Appliance World Community Service The Island Christian Church will be awarding two $2,000 scholarships, one male, and one female to Long Island students whose lives exemplify genuine character and promote scriptural values upon which our country was founded. Up to four $750 High Honorable Mention scholarships may also be awarded regardless of gender. Selection of the winners will be based upon an essay written by the applicant as well as three recommendations. All required nominations and recommendations must be received by March 2, Visit: $500 Appliance World is offering a $500 scholarship to an Oyster Bay HS college bound senior who has demonstrated outstanding community service to others at the local, state, or national level. In 750 words or less, discuss which community service activities you have participated in, which activity meant the most to you and why, as well as what sort of community service plans you have for the future. Please describe why you could benefit from this scholarship as well any other information that would describe your character. 3 Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York AXA Achievement Fairleigh Dickinson University Presidential FASNY (Firemen s Association of the State of New York) Foot Locker Scholar Athlete GE-Reagan Foundation Horatio Alger National Island Drafting and Technical Institute $1500 These scholarships are available to New York State high school seniors who will be graduating in June of The student MUST be related to a firefighter, be a firefighter, or be an explorer in a fire department that is a member of The Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York. For more information, visit: AXA provides over $1.4 million in scholarships to students throughout the nation representing all 50 states. Students have the opportunity to receive a $2,500, $10,000 or $25,000 scholarship. In addition, for every student who wins a scholarship, a grant in the amount of $1,000 will be made Full to the winner s school. Visit: FDU is proud to offer the Presidential, a full- scholarship for first-time freshmen that recognizes exceptional academic performance. Eligibility: Must be a member in good standing with FASNY or have a parent/legal guardian who is a member, attend high school as a senior and enrolled in the fall 2018 school year at an accredited two or four-year institution or an accredited technical postsecondary school, serve as a current Junior firefighter, Explorer Scout or RAM in a group affiliated with a volunteer department; a volunteer firefighter; or a volunteer with an EMS unit, and demonstrate a commitment to both volunteer emergency service and the community. For more information, visit: $20,000 Foot Locker will be awarding incoming college freshman with $20,000 in scholarship funding to pursue a 4-year college degree - not because they scored the most touchdowns or goals, but because sports have helped them grow into strong leaders at school and in their communities. For more information. Visit: $10,000 The GE-Reagan Foundation program annually awards roughly 20 college-bound students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship. Visit: $2,500 This scholarship for high school seniors can be applied to costs for the Computer Aided Drafting and Design and the Electronic and Computer Service Technology Programs at Island Drafting and Technical Institute. 4 Island Federal Credit Union Ithaca College Park Scholars Ithaca College MLK Scholar Jenkins Memorial for Teacher Education (NYS PTA) John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest LI Mathematics (LIMACON) Dr Jong Pil Lee Memorial Full $25,000 to full Island Federal Credit Union is offering three $10,000 and eight $2,500 scholarships to qualifying seniors who live and attend school on Long Island. In addition, students must hold an Island checking/debit account at the time of entry - a no-cost requirement that can be opened at any branch. Visit: At least 10 merit-based scholarships are awarded to outstanding high school seniors each year. In addition, at least three merit-based scholarships are awarded to Park School rising juniors each spring. Visit: The MLK Scholar Program is open to academically talented U.S. citizens and permanent residents from ethnic and racial backgrounds that have been historically underrepresented in U.S. higher education. For more information, visit: $3,000 Eligible public high school seniors are those who plan to prepare for a teaching career, plan to attend a college of the State University of New York for baccalaureate degree in education -ORplan to attend a two year community college before transferring to a baccalaureate degree program in education in a college of the State University of New York, have not accepted scholarships exceeding the monetary value of $16,000, and attend a public high school in New York State in a school district where there is a PTA/PTSA unit in good standing. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest encourages students to write an original and creative essay that demonstrates their understanding of political courage as defined by John F. Kennedy in Profiles in Courage. Applicants are expected to consult and cite several source materials while constructing their essay. Awards will include a $10,000 1st place prize, $1,000 2nd place prize, five finalist prizes at $500 each, as well as eight honorable mentions at $100 each. Visit: $1,500 In memory of Dr Jong Pil Lee. Students of African American, Native American, or Non- European Hispanic American descent are eligible. Students must also plan to major in mathematics at an accredited university of their choice. This scholarship was established to recognize the profound effect of breast cancer/other women s cancer have on a family. The LI2Day is designed to provide a one-time award of $2,500 to 5 high school seniors who reside with a parent or guardian who is a survivor of breast cancer and/or other women s cancer or resided with a parent or guardian who has passed from breast cancer and/or other women s cancer. Walsh WE CARE Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) Oyster Bay Italian American Club Student Athlete $2,000 Those aspiring to become teachers will be given extra consideration. 3 graduating seniors in Nassau and Suffolk Counties will receive this award. The student must reside or have resided with a parent or guardian who is a survivor of any cancer other than breast cancer and/or other women s cancers or have resided with a parent or guardian who has passed from any cancer other than breast cancer and/or other women s cancers. Must be interested in majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Biology, Environmental Science, Mathematics or Computer Science. Should have a minimum of a 3.5 cumulative high school grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Should have a combined Critical Reading and Math score of at least 1360 on the SAT or 29 ACT composite. For more information, visit: Molloy College offers a variety of scholarship opportunities for incoming freshmen students. Among them are full scholarships, with a deadline of December 15th, The Dominican American scholarship, awarding $4,000 to $20,000 depending on student achievement, deadline is March 1st. The Molloy Community Service Award, granting $500 to $5,000 to students who demonstrate a commitment to their community and their school, deadline is March 1st. The Fine Arts s award partial or full scholarships and are granted to individuals who display outstanding achievement in the fine arts. Please visit $1,000 Selection of candidates is based on several factors, with emphasis on character, personal involvement in school activities and the community, especially those activities which benefit the less fortunate. 6 Oyster Bay Italian American Club The Michael Toto and Carmine Renaldo Memorial Ron Brown Program Ronald McDonald House/HACER $300 Essay Topic: Write an essay of no less than 250 words on how an Italian person has had an impact on some aspect of your life. This scholarship is open to any high school senior who lives in the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Scholl District, and who plans to further their education after high school. The essay must be typed and mailed to The Oyster Bay Italian American Club, 48 Summit Street, Oyster Bay, NY The Ron Brown Program seeks to identify African American students who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, show exceptional leadership potential and make an impact on their communities through service to others. The scholarship awards $40,000 each year, at $10,000 a year for four years, to talented high school seniors. Visit: McDonald s, through the HACER scholarship, has granted over 31 million dollars in Hispanic scholarships since its inception and is continuing to do so year after year. Visit: 4/16/18 1/9/18 Currently open Scholastic Art & Writing Awards The Scholastic Awards partners with organizations to offer students Special Awards: special opportunities to receive additional scholarships for works in certain categories or dealing with particular themes. For more information, visit: Skidmore College Skidmore College is offering scholarship opportunities in the areas of science and math, as well as music. The Porter Presidential in Science and Mathematics, available to 5-7 students per year, offers $15,000 annually or $60,000 for all four years. The Filene Music is available to 4-5 students per year and awards $12,000 annually, or $48,000 over four years. Visit: 1/15/18 WACE To qualify for this scholarship, students must have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale and must apply for the academic year at one of the WACE Partner Institutions.
