The staff includes 12 Consultants, 27 Specialist Registrars & 19 F2s. In addition GPs & ENPs operate in the department and will staff triage, see & treat & the Minor Injuries Unit. Furthermore, the emergency department runs a 16 bed Clinical Decision Unit managed by the Emergency Consultants. The Gastroenterology is a tertiary referral centre for IBD and ERCP/endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). We have a turnover of around 40,000 patients per year. Lambeth and Southwark have some of the highest rates of STIs and HIV in the country. This offers a unique opportunity to learn how to manage the whole spectrum of STIs in a friendly, supportive environment. We run various specialist clinics, have an Academic half day as well as a dedicated F2/VTS/CNS teaching session. The post starts with a 2 week induction period, completing our in-house online local induction and sitting in with other clinicians before starting to see patients. The department has a weekly academic half day consisting of case discussions and lectures, and there is a dedicated teaching session for our F2/VTS doctors. One day a week would be spent in the HIV department. This would include attending the ward meeting then a round with the ward reg and/or HIV OP experience. This is a multiorgan disorder and whilst much of the involves managing acute painful crisis, there is also the need for multidisciplinary working and the care of acutely unwell patients with other complications eg chest complications, renal complications, stroke. They will also be involved in reviewing patients with sickle cell disease who are under other teams in the hospital eg surgical and obstetric teams. These patients often have complicated psychosocial needs and they learn how to manage patients with complicated long term conditions. In addition they will attend general haematology clinics during the attachment and have the opportunity to see general haematology and clotting referrals with the haematology registrar and receive laboratory haematology teaching. The on call rota covers the haematology-oncology patients, so they will also learn about the acute management of patients with haematological and nonhaematological malignant disease The inpatient work is based at St Thomas on the medical wards. The on call and outpatient clinics are at Guy s. Dr Jo Howard Day to day management of in patients with sickle cell disease. This will include daily ward rounds, acute review of patients, discharge planning. Multidisciplinary working with the nursing and psychology members of the sickle team. Communication with carers and relatives, regarding diagnosis, treatment plan, prognosis and discharge planning is part of day to day practice. Close liaison with community teams and general hospitals social services and GPs is practised.
