You will either be post take, on the normal ward round, CEPOD (emergency theatres) or normal main theatres in the mornings and in the afternoons you will either be on the ward, CEPOD or theatres. The other alternative is that you will be on call. The on calls are pretty well spaced and not too often. When doing a weekend you get the day off before ie. Thursdays, which is nice. When doing a weekday oncall you get half day usually the following afternoon. Each Monday morning there is the radiology meeting. Where scans are discussed so good opportunity to learn. Each Thursday morning is our own surgical teaching in the ed centre where one of us teaches the rest, so check the timetable to know when it s your turn. The rota also allows for Thursday afternoons FY2 teaching, unless you are oncall. The oncalls are well supported by registrar and consultant. Each day there is a GI ward round and a Breast/Endocrine ward round done by a registrar so is very organised and led by a senior. William Harvey Hospital. Mainly on surgical wards but also have outlier patients, and main theatres/day surgery theatres The consultant you are allocated to will be your clinical supervisor. From my experience, they are all pretty nice and get you involved if you like and also teach quite a lot. As above. Your main role other than what is on the

10 rota is to support your FY1s as they are quite busy generally and will need help on the wards especially in the afternoons and with more complex patients/scans. Around 5 sessions are spent on the Eye Casualty, seeing acute Ophthalmic complaints such as acute angle closure glaucoma, iritis, corneal abrasions and trauma. The Eye Casualty is supervised by a Registrar or a Consultant and is a rich learning environment for both GP trainees and aspiring Ophthalmologists. There are one or two sessions a week in theatre, which you can swap with your colleagues each week to see a different list. The rest of the time consists of one session helping in clinic, again supervised by a Registrar and a Consultant, F2 teaching on Thursday afternoons and Ophthalmology teaching on Friday afternoons, in which an F2 or GP Trainee presents an interesting case he has managed recently. On-call duties occur roughly once a week and last from 5 pm until 9 am the next day, so the on-call shift starts after the day's work has finished. However, the on-calls are much quieter than Surgical or Medical night shifts, so it is more than possible to get to work the next day. There are also two and a half weekend on-calls per rotation. There is a Registrar and a Consultant available by telephone for advice during the oncalls. Finally, there is one session a week which is left vacant for the trainee Doctor to do audits/go to theatre/see his family, etc. Rotary Ward, Outpatient Area, Day Surgery Unit Mr. Richard Edwards, Consultant Ophthalmologist with an interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology, and

Work is divided into morning and afternoon sessions. As outlined above, sessions consist of seeing outpatients in clinic, acute cases in Eye Casualty on an outpatient basis and going to theatre. A typical week consists of on calls, clinics and theatres. Each doctor gets 2 half days a week. Every day the sho has to review their respective consultants patients at 8.30am before starting their daily assignments. On calls: in a week one does at least one gynae on call from 1pm-5pm (clerking gynae patients in a&e, attending to the gynae ward), at least one 8am to 8pm on call shift a week which includes clerking in A&E, seeing patients in maternity day care, assisting on call theatre cases (gynae and obstetric) and attending to labour ward. Miss Choy Lee/ Mr Seaton/ Mr Etokowo During this rotation you will develop a wide range of communication and clinical skills during this rotation; ranging from breaking bad news to antenatal examination and basic surgical skills. The basic week pattern is 8.00am-5pm, daily with 2 half days off on most weeks. Thursday afternoons are scheduled as off for FY2 teaching and Friday afternoons for O&G teaching (provided you aren't on call at these times). On Calls: Additional to this, you should expect one long day on call, 8am-8.30pm per week. During this on call you cover both obstetrics and gynaecology. This on call typically involves managing and reviewing all referrals, A&E and wards; reviewing those on gynae and postnatal wards who are post-take; and reviewing patients in maternity day care and labour ward when needed. You may be called to emergency C-sections or gynaecology cases in theatre. You may have to do routine ward work during your on call. Sometimes, there are others "available for cover" who should help with this; and sometimes someone to help with the elective C-section list. You should also expect one "Gynaecology on call" per weekthis is 1-5pm. During this on call you manage the Gynaecology Emergency Assessment Unit with a senior nurse and review all gynaecology referrals from the wards, A&E and may take referrals from GPs. You also manage any outstanding issues with patients on the gynaecology ward. You will work a total of 5 weekends (there is no 1-5pm on call over weekends), these might be in close succession to fit in your annual/ study leave. Half of these will be nights.
