Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust Information on Pre- Registration Pharmacist Training Kirsty Cavill. Pre-registration Pharmacist Manager
Introduction Harrogate & District NHS Foundation Trust is a forward thinking organisation. We aim to be the first choice for patients by working together for excellent health care. It is a district hospital providing acute services to a population of 150,000. The hospital has 280 beds and provides services to a community hospital, paediatrics, cancer services, general medicine, emergency department, surgery, ITU/HDU, urology and orthopaedics. The hospital has introduced electronic medicine charts across all ward areas. Promoting and achieving excellence, value and safety for our patients through innovation in medicines management The Pharmacy department has around 60 members of staff. The services we provide comprise of clinical ward visits, ward rounds, near patient dispensing, clinics including diabetic hypertension clinics, warfarin clinics, and surgical pre assessment clinics, medicines information and aseptics. We also provide patient education services in pulmonary rehabilitation, cardiology and neurology. As a department we provide the medicines management training to all the hospital based nurses and we have undergraduate pharmacy students with us on placements from Huddersfield and Bradford Universities. Page 2 of 7
Posts offered At any one time HDFT trains 3 pre-registration pharmacists. This consists of; 1 pre-reg undertaking a 12 month placement at HDFT 1 split placement between HDFT and the Haxby GP group (see below for further information)- This post is to be confirmed otherwise we will have 2x 12 month placements 1 placement for Bradford university undergraduates who are undertaking the sandwich programme Information regarding posts We have a well-structured timetable and training file which covers all aspects of our hospital pharmacy. Rotations include: surgery including pre-admission clinics, medicine including the admission unit and discharge planning, care of the elderly including stroke, paediatrics, medicines information, mental health, aseptics, chemotherapy & TPN as well as outpatient and inpatient dispensing. Time will be organised for you to spend time in pharmacy led clinics and pharmacy led patient education sessions. Opportunities to spend time with other health care professionals e.g. specialist nurses will be organised. You will also spend time with the pharmacist who visits the local Hospice and the community hospital. On a Wednesday afternoon pre-registration trainee pharmacists meet their tutor, attend tutorials and have allocated directed study time. There is the opportunity to attend in house CPD meetings. Page 3 of 7
A cross-sector placement in community pharmacy is arranged for the full-year trainees. Our pre-registration trainee pharmacists attend the regional training programme at the University of Leeds. Whilst there is a structured training programme, we will be flexible to suit your interests and learning needs. In 2016 /17 we started to provide a joint placement with a GP Practice, the Haxby Group Practice. A trainee spent 3 months with the Practice Pharmacist to experience the role of a practice based pharmacist. Currently we are unable to confirm if this will continue. Other useful information For further details of HDFT please visit; The hospital is situated within a mile of the town centre. Harrogate is placed between the North Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Dales The town itself has a good nightlife with plenty of bars and a wide variety of restaurants. There are several sports centres, spas, theatres, a climbing wall and two cinemas. Being close to the countryside there are many outdoor activities within a short distance such as walking, climbing and mountain biking. Harrogate has a regular bus service and trains to Leeds and York. It is well placed for access to the A1 /M1 and M62. Leeds Bradford airport is within a half hour drive which also has a regular bus service from the town. Page 4 of 7
Accommodation can be provided on site if required. It is the trainee s responsibility to arrange this. We can help with the details. Weekend/Late night working Hours of work are generally; 9am-5.30pm Monday to Friday. All pre-registration pharmacists are expected to work a 5 hour shift on at least 4 weekends through the year (9am- 2pm). All pre-regs are expected to work a late night occasionally (approx. 4) throughout the year. The hours on a late night are 10.30am-7pm Open days Open days for interested students will be held in June. Please contact Kirsty Cavill (kirsty.cavill@hdft.nhs.uk ) for further information regarding these events or refer to the pharmacy pages on the HDFT website ( ). For more information on pre-registration pharmacist places in the region please look at the School of Medicines Optimisation (HEE Yorkshire and the Humber) website: Page 5 of 7
