1 ISHRS Regional Workshop Asian Hair Surgery Workshop Hosted by Kenichiro Imagawa, MD Yokohama, Japan March 30 - April 1, 2007 OVERVIEW The trend of Hair Transplantation in Asians is on the rise, more and more of the public are aware of its natural result from advertisement on the Internet worldwide. This 3-day workshop will include lectures and live surgery by experienced and world renown surgeons in the field of hair restoration surgery in Asians. TARGET AUDIENCE Physicians from beginners to advanced level of experience in hair restoration surgery. LEARNING OBJECTIVES (1) Assess and differentiate the ethnic differences of the scalp and hair between Asians and Caucasians. (2) Identify techniques that will achieve optimal result for Asians. (3) Describe how to harvest the donor strip with minimum hair transaction (donor dissecting technique). (4) Demonstrate the technique of a modified trichophytic donor closure. (5) Understand principles of dense packing and megasession. (6) Compare and contrast between Western FUT and techniques using Transplanter. (7) Discuss the complications of hair transplantation in Asians. CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION (CME) CREDIT The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medial education for physicians. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery designates this educational activity for a maximum of 20.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. 2 MESSAGE FROM THE WORKSHOP DIRECTOR MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE ISHRS Dear Colleagues: I am delighted that the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) is able to offer the Asian It is my honor to have the privilege of organizing ISHRS Regional workshop in Yokohama, Japan. This workshop will be the 2 nd after Korea which was held 5 years ago in Daegu. Hair Surgery Workshop hosted by Dr. Kenichiro Imagawa. The ISHRS is committed to offering the highest standard of continuing medical education to physicians specializing in hair restoration. The ISHRS was established in 1993 and is considered to be the Hair transplantation should be treated and designed according to individual need. Hair characteristics, head shape, hair and skin color, and other unique features specific to Asians should be considered, and inquire the techniques that can achieve optimal result. I believe all of you will find many pearls from our outstanding speakers, and undoubtedly return home with many ideas and new techniques. Also, for the foreign doctors who are visiting Japan at the end of March, you will enjoy world s leading medical authority on hair. With over 700 members worldwide, representing 49 countries, of which 17 are Asian countries, this Asian Hair Surgery Workshop will be an important venue for those wishing to expand their base of knowledge on cutting edge surgical techniques from around the world. 5 FACULTY Paul Cotterill, BSc, MD President ISHRS, Diplomate American Board of HRS, Chair CME Committee Dr. Cotterill graduated from University of Toronto in After his residency in Orthopedics and General Surgery. He started his private practice exclusively to Hair Restoration Surgery since He is a member of the ISHRS and lectures internationally. He published numerous articles on HT, and recently Hair Transplantation in Women in Dr. Unger s textbook Hair Transplantation 3 rd Edition. Damkerng Pathomvanich, MD, FACS Diplomate American Board of Surgery, Fellow American College of Surgeons, Diplomate American Board of HRS, ISHRS Board of Governors, Director Fellowship Training Program in HRS (ISHRS) Dr. Pathomvanich graduated from Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University in He took his internship and residency in the USA. In 1988 he undertook a one year cosmetic fellowship in Little Rock, Arkansas and also with Drs. Bluford and Dow Stough in Hot Spring, Arkansas. After completed his fellowship he had visited many clinics in the U.S. and decided to move back to Thailand. He started his private practice dedicated solely to hair transplant surgery in He frequently lectures world wide and has published many articles regarding hair restoration surgery. In 2006, he wrote a chapter Hair Transplantation in Asians in the latest textbook of Hair Transplantation Edited by Drs. Haber & Stough. He was the first hair transplant surgeon who reported an open technique that he coined the term Donor dissecting that minimized transaction of the hair follicle. Jerry Wong, MD Diplomate American Board of HRS Dr. Wong graduated from University of Alberta in 1973, and worked in general practice from 1976 to His colleague s HT fascinated him in 1991, and he attended Dr. Marzola s training school in Australia in Immediately after he returned back home he set up his new practice exclusively to Hair Restoration Surgery with his colleague Dr. Hasson. He first lectured on lateral slits in 1997 and was unseen by the majority of hair doctors until a few years ago when he demonstrated that hair flows perpendicular. He is also very famous for his fantastic techniques of megasessions and ultra dense packing. See page 6 for Registration Information. 5
6 FACULTY (continued) Sungjoo Tommy Hwang, MD Diplomate American Board of HRS Dr. Hwang was born in 1969 in Daegu, the third biggest city in Korea, and graduated from Kyungpook National Medical School in During his dermatology residency, his boss Dr. Jung Chul Kim s HT impressed him and he went on fellowship at the Hair Transplant Center in the Dep. of Dermatology at KUNH. From 2002, he set his own clinic. He lectured internationally and published many articles. His research on Recipient Site Influence or Recipient Dominance earned him the Platinum Follicle Award at ISHRS 2006 Annual Scientific Meeting in San Diego. Kenichiro Imagawa, MD Diplomate American Board of HRS, Member, Pro Bono Committee of ISHRS Dr. Imagawa graduated from Keio University School of Medicine in He practiced OBGYN for 6 years and then decided to entered plastic surgery residency training for a change. He started his practice at Yokohama in 1985 dedicated to hair restoration surgery and some cosmetic surgery. He was fascinated in hair restoration when he observed Dr. Seery s procedures in Sacramento in He also learned from many pioneers in hair transplantation. He is a co author of Hair Transplantation in Asian Patients in Drs. Unger & Shapiro s texbook Hair Transplantation, 4 th Edition. Disposable gowns, mask and shoe cover will be available at the clinic Office Language The official language of the Workshop is English, but Japanese translation will be available. Video, Photography & Audio Recording Policy Video and audio recording, and photography are prohibited in the Workshop. The only exception to the photography policy are photos taken by ISHRS, for the purposes to use in ISHRS publications. Persons with Disabilities The ISHRS fully complies with the legal requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the rules and regulations thereof.
