2 2016 Annual Spring Meeting Welcome to the 81 st Annual Meeting of the Pennsylvania affiliate of American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science and the Pennsylvania State Society of American Medical Technologists. ASCLS-PA and PASSAMT are pleased to offer special registration rates to members. Member and non-member registration rates have stayed the same as 2012 prices a best buy! Treat yourself! All committees working on the Annual Meeting have put a great deal of effort into planning a comprehensive program for you. You will find within these pages, and during the two days, the best continuing education and networking opportunities in the area. You will once again be able to charge your registration for the meeting on your Mastercard or Visa. Simply fill in the necessary information on the registration form. We are excited to once again hold our meeting at the Red Lion Hotel (formerly Holiday Inn Harrisburg East), located at 4751 Lindle Road, Harrisburg, PA. This venue allows us to provide state-of-the-art seminars in a comfortable and convenient setting that is conducive to learning. A Light Breakfast and Buffet Lunch are included in your daily registration. This 2016 meeting is a BEST BUY with 26 hours of PACE approved continuing education credits planned over the twoday meeting. The program was designed to meet the needs of laboratorians seeking to participate in the BOC Certification Maintenance Program. Vendor exhibits will be part of the meeting both days. George, DO, FCAP, FASCP Assistant Professor of Pathology and Medical Director of Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine and Apheresis; Program Director, Pathology Residency Penn State Hershey Medical Center This session will focus on the ethical principles that apply to massive transfusion and will highlight ways to incorporate these principles into the decision making therein. The session will also highlight a communications process between the transfusion service and clinical team to establish trust, rapport and optimize communications during emergencies. CE Organizer The ASCLS online CE ORGANIZER program will be used to record your continuing education credits. All attendees can utilize this program to generate a P.A.C.E. certificate for this meeting. There will be NO attendance rosters passed around during the sessions and NO waiting in line for P.A.C.E. validation at the end of the meeting. Comparison to and differentiation from chronic and other acute leukemias will be discussed. Laboratory tests utilized to confirm the diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia will be described. Coronary artery disease is the most common cause of mortality worldwide. Some clinical studies suggest an association between low vitamin D levels and adverse cardiovascular events. This lecture will discuss vitamin D as a potential biomarker of cardiovascular events for individuals with/without diabetes. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, ecornell What happens inside after we eat the rich foods designed to lasso our taste buds but unnatural to our body? We ll take a look and consider the consequences, as well as what happens when we give our body what it wants mostly whole plant foods. P.A.C.E. approval is pending for all sessions. Martinez, Ph.D., D(ABMM) Director, Clinical and Molecular Microbiology Geisinger Health System Gram stains provide important clinical information, yet maintaining Gram stain competency is no simple task. Telemicroscopy utilizes technology and can improve diagnostic accuracy, providing expert consultation for technologists who are uncertain about their results. The characteristics of a good team and a good team leader will be discussed. We will also explore some different types of team building exercises with the opportunity for audience participation. Participants will leave with tools and fun ideas for team building in their own laboratories.
