List a few strategies that can be used to improve learning. 3. Identify circumstances that enhance and produce optimal learning. New research is constantly showing us more about how the brain works. Based upon information from The New Science of Learning by Doyle and Zakrajek, this session will provide a few tips on how to be a better learner. Zika Virus: Past, Present, and Future Lisa Maness, PhD, MT(ASCP); WSSU Assistant Professor Location: K154 Time:10:15 11:15 1. Trace the Zika Virus from its origin to where it is now epidemic. 2. Explain the tests that are available for diagnosing Zika Virus. 3. Understand where science is aimed concerning Zika Virus prevention and treatments.

This presenter will first discuss Zika Virus history, including outbreaks and likely mosquito species that helped spread the disease. Symptoms will be given for each outbreak or set of cases. This session will also include useful preventions of the disease as well as current and testing and treatments. Identify Weaker Subgroups of A with Ease and Simplicity Christine T. Forrest, MS, BSMT(ASCP); Sandhills Community College Location: K130 Time:10:15 11:15 1. Detect and list the steps in resolving ABO discrepancies. 2. Compare the front and reverse ABO types with the patient's transfusion and clinical history. 3. Interpret ABO forward and reverse typing results including weak subgroups of A. This presentation will explain the resolution of ABO discrepancies with a focus on the weak subgroups of A. The learner will interpret ABO results to see if they can detect discrepancies and develop a plan of identification. Steps to resolving ABO discrepancies will be presented as well as three case studies. Let's Migrate! A basic review of electrophoresis in the clinical lab Miller Slaughter Vrnak, B.S., MLT(ASCP); FirstHealth Moore Regional Location: K146 Time:10:15 11:15 1. Convey a knowledge of the basic fundamentals of the theory of electrophoresis. 2. Demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot problems that arise with testing in all phase of testing.

3. Interpret electrophoretic patterns, identifying normal and abnormal patterns of migration. A procedure that is not as frequently performance in the hospital laboratory, electrophoresis proficiency is running the risk of decreasing as a result of infrequent tech exposure. This presentation will provide a basic review of electrophoresis practice in the hospital laboratory and include cases studies that will serve to convey fundamentals of the procedure and its interpretation. I can deviate 95.5% of the time! A review of effective quality management Leslie McLaughlin, MT(ASCP); Pinehurst Medical Clinic Location: K147 Time:11:30 12:30 1. Explain how and why IQCP is utilized to ensure quality results in the clinical lab. 2. Demonstrate an understanding of the practice, performance, and interpretation of linearity studies to ensure accurate and precise lab results. 3. Differentiate between calibration, cal ver, quality control, and linearity performance This is a general review of quality assurance, cal ver, IQCP, and linearity studies required by lab accrediting bodies.

Community Hospital Labs: Challenges and Opportunities Kate Pruitt, MLS(ASCP); UNC Chatham Hospital Location: K146 Time:11:30 12:30 1. Describe different hospital sizes and organizational structures that affect lab performance. 2. Identify and isolate challenges and opportunities for lab professionals in the changing climate of healthcare. 3. Understand the role that small community hospitals and labs play in this landscape. This session will explore the changing healthcare climate, the role that different types of hospitals play and the challenges and opportunities this presents in the community hospital setting. Improving Tuberculosis Diagnosis, Outcomes, and Cost Savings by Molecular Based Laboratory Methods Nichole Holroyd, MLS (ASCP), Master of Public Health (MPH) Student, South Dakota State University (SDSU) Location: K154 Time:11:30 12:30 1. Understand the significance of the burden of tuberculosis (TB) as a public health concern. 2. Understand the basic theory and significance of molecular based laboratory methods for the diagnosis and exclusion of TB. 3. Describe how molecular assays can improve diagnosis and patient outcomes and reduce costs.

The Xpert MTB/RIF assay can help to reduce the time of tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis and reduce length of stay overall and in negative airflow isolation (A.I.I.) for patients undergoing evaluation for TB. As a whole, this has the potential to provide significant systematic cost savings to healthcare systems and improved patient outcomes. Certification Test Review and Prep Candice L Freeman, MAEd., MLS(ASCP)BB; Tammy Pfannkuch, MLT Student; Mary Ramos, MLT Student; Mackenzie Osborne, MLT Student Location: K130 Time:1:45 2:45 CEU: 0.0 This session will be a review for the technician and technologist level certification examinations. Please note that there is no available CEU credit for this session. You Can't Get Good Results from Bad Samples A review of sample collection Yolando Bond, PBT(ASCP); FirstHealth Moore Regional Location: K146 Time:1:45 2:45 1. Correlate preanalytical phases of testing, such as sample collection with the analytical phase of testing, understanding that accurate results begin with proper sample collection. 2. Explain how to properly collect various types of clinical specimens such as blood and other body fluids. 3. Recognize and respond to adverse patient reactions that can arise from phlebotomy procedures.

This session will provide a valuable review of phlebotomy best practices and new trends in sample collection. Professional Growth in Laboratory Medicine: Tips for New Professionals Lisa Cremeans, MMDS, MLS(ASCP)CM, SM CM, MB CM UNC Chapel Hill, Division of Clinical Laboratory Science Location: K147 Time:1:45 2:45 1.
