4 The Alfred General Surgery Meeting The Langham Melbourne, October 2011 Dear Colleagues, It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the General Surgery Meeting of the Alfred Hospital, Practical Updates for General Surgeons. The meeting is a biennial one for General Surgeons and this year it is being held at the Langham Hotel in Southbank, Melbourne, on Friday and Saturday, 28 and 29 October, The theme of the meeting is Practical Updates for General Surgeons, highlighting How I Do It sessions and updates on controversial areas. The organising committee have put together an outstanding program which should appeal to all General Surgeons regardless of their sub-specialty. The invited speakers, Chris Pyke, Adrian Polglase, Robert Padbury, Paul Myles and Gregor Brown, Neil Collier and the local faculty from the Alfred will provide additional perspective to the presentations and panel discussions. The meeting has been scheduled to enable attendance at the conference followed by a long weekend in Melbourne to take in the Derby and the Melbourne Cup. The Conference Dinner will be held at the Carousel at Albert Park which is a superb venue in Spring. 7 Provisional Program Invited speakers - National faculty AND Key Note Speakers Dr Gregor Brown Dr Gregor Brown is a physician gastroenterologist who combines public practice as Head of Endoscopy at The Alfred Hospital with a private Gastroenterology practice in inner Melbourne. His main interests are in luminal gastroenterology, and the endoscopic management of these conditions, including interventional gastroscopy/ colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy and balloon enteroscopy. He has been on the Australian Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Association Executive Committee for 4 years and is active in colonoscopy training in Australia as one of the instigators and developers of the current National Endoscopy Training Initiative (NETI) program, and is a member of the inaugural NETI Committee. His current research interests include capsule endoscopy, balloon enteroscopy, familial polyposis syndromes, and new treatments for coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel disease. Associate Professor Neil Collier Associate Professor Neil Collier is past head of the HPB and Upper GI Unit at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He trained at the Royal Post Graduate Medical School in London and the Mayo Clinic. He is also chairman of the General Surgical Clinical Institute at Epworth Healthcare. He also has involvement in the Medico-legal area as a past board member and current member of the Medical Advisory Committee of AVANT Insurance. He has extensive experience in the management of biliary disease and the treatment of bile duct injuries. Professor Paul Myles Paul Myles is Professor and Director of the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, and at Monash University, Australia. He is an Australian National Health & Medical Research Council Practitioner Fellow, and is a member of the Research Committee of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. Paul is a member of 3 Editorial Boards, including the British Journal of Anaesthesia, is an Editorial Consultant for The Lancet, and has reviewed for 20 journals. He has published more than 150 papers. The main focus of his research has been on patient quality of recovery, avoidance of postoperative complications and large multicentre trials in anaesthesia. Dr Robert Padbury Robert Padbury is currently Director, Division of Surgical & Specialty Services at Flinders Medical Centre & Southern Area Clinical Director, Surgery within Adelaide Health Service. He is a Hepatobiliary Surgeon. Trained in Surgery in Adelaide and had overseas attachments in Paris, France and Bath and Birmingham in the United Kingdom. Commenced surgical practice in Adelaide at Flinders Medical Centre and Ashford in 1992 and set up South Australian Liver Transplant Unit. Senior Lecturer, Flinders University. He is Chairman of the South Australian Surgical Taskforce, Member of the SA Clinical Senate and Director of the South Australian Centre for Health Care Improvement. His major interest outside of his surgical specialty is improving the quality of healthcare. Professor Adrian Polglase Professor Adrian Polglase has a long association with Cabrini Health and has held several high profile positions within the Alfred Group of Hospitals, and was appointed as the inaugural Professor of Surgery at Cabrini Health in Professor Polglase is a colorectal surgeon and Emeritus Professor of Surgery at Monash University. Professor Polglase has a dedicated interest into research into bowel disease and raising awareness of preventative strategies and methods of early detection and screening. He is Chairman and Founder of Let s Beat Bowel Cancer which is an initiative of Cabrini Health. Let s Beat Bowel Cancer is a not-for-profit, community awareness program dedicated to saving lives through improved bowel cancer research, education and prevention. Dr Chris Pyke Dr Chris Pyke is a general surgeon with a special interest in Breast and Endocrine Surgery. After completing his surgical training at Mater Hospital in Brisbane, Dr Pyke undertook surgical fellowships at the Nottingham Breast Unit in the United Kingdom and the Mayo Clinic in the United States of America. On his return to Australia, Dr Pyke took up a position as senior lecturer with The University of Queensland and completed a PhD in breast cancer risk quantification. He is currently Deputy Chair of BreastSurgANZ, and an examiner with the RACS.
8 The Alfred General Surgery Meeting The Langham Melbourne, October 2011 Invited speakers - Local Faculty Mr Christopher Akin Senior Trauma Surgeon and General Surgeon, Upper Gastrointestinal Service, The Alfred. Since appointment in 1984 as a Consultant General Surgeon at the Alfred he has worked in all of the General Surgical Units and the Trauma Service during the course of which has had considerable exposure to the management of Tissue necrosis in its various forms and taught on the subject for the Part II Course in General Surgery RACS. Mr Stephen Bell Stephan Bell completed his medical degree at Monash University in 1991, and trained in General Surgery at The Alfred Hospital. He became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2000, and went on to Specialist Colorectal training on the Australasian Colorectal Training Programme. He subsequently worked at the center of excellence Hôpital Saint-Antoine, Paris, France with the assistance of winning the Murray and Unity Phiels Colorectal Fellowship. Mr Bell has restricted himself to a Colorectal Surgical Practice. He is a member of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand. He is the Chairman of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Committee, Victorian Cooperative Oncology Group, The Cancer Council, Victoria, and Editor of Gastrointestinal Cancer Update. He is a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the Cabrini Monash University Academic Department of Surgery, and is actively involved in colorectal research and surgical training programs. Associate Professor Wendy Brown Wendy Brown is a General Surgeon with special interests in Upper GI, Bariatric and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery. She completed her surgical training, and PhD, through The Alfred Hospital before completing a post-fellowship year at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. She is appointed as a VMO at The Alfred Hospital and Associate Professor at Monash University and is Director of the Monash University Centre for Obesity Research and Education. Mr Peter Carne Peter Carne obtained his FRACS (General Surgery) in He completed the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand/RACS Colorectal training program in This included a Colorectal Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic Rochester. Currently a specialist Colorectal surgeon at The Alfred and Cabrini hospitals and a Senior Lecturer in the Cabrini Monash University Department of Surgery. Member of the Colorectal Consulting Group. Special interests include: Colorectal neoplasia and pelvic tumours, colonic stents, inflammatory bowel diseases and minimally invasive techniques in Colorectal Surgery Mr Martin Chin Martin Chin is a colorectal surgeon based at the Alfred and Cabrini. He completed his medical degree at Melbourne University in 1993, and underwent general surgery training, becoming a fellow of the College of Surgeons in He subsequently undertook post fellowship training in colorectal surgery in Melbourne and the UK. He is a member of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand.
9 Provisional Program Invited speakers - Local faculty Mr Peter Evans Peter Evans graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1988 and completed his surgical training at The Alfred Hospital in Overseas specialist HepatoPancreatoBiliary and Liver Transplant training was undertaken at the Cleveland Clinic (USA). He has an appointment as an HPB surgeon within the Upper GI Surgical Unit at The Alfred, Cabrini and Frankston Hospitals. He is on the Executive Council of the Australian and New Zealand HPB Association, is a member of the International HPB Association and the Victorian HPB Surgical Group, and a Senior Lecturer in the Monash University Department of Surgery. Mr Chip Farmer Chip Farmer FRACS, FCSSANZ, graduated from Monash University with MBBS (Hons) in 1981 and completed his surgical training at The Alfred Hospital in Overseas specialist colorectal training was undertaken at St Mark s Hospital (UK) and the Cleveland Clinic (USA). Mr Farmer has special expertise in Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery. He has an appointment as a Colorectal Surgeon at The Alfred and Cabrini Hospitals and he is Co-Director of the Melbourne Gastrointestinal Investigation Unit at Cabrini Hospital. He is a member of the Colorectal Consulting Group. Mr Farmer is a past President of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand and a Senior Lecturer in the Monash University Department of Surgery. Mr Simon Grodski Simon Grodski graduated MBBS(Hons) Monash University in 1997 and completed residency and general surgical training at The Alfred Hospital, gaining his FRACS in Simon completed a fellowship in Endocrine Surgery at St. Vincent s Hospital Melbourne and The University of Sydney at The Royal North Shore Hospital. Simon is currently a VMO with the Breast, Endocrine and General Surgery Unit at The Alfred Hospital and a member of the Monash University Endocrine Surgery Unit. Professor Russell Gruen Russell Gruen is Professor of Surgery and Public Health at Monash University, Director of the National Trauma Research Institute, and is a general and trauma surgeon at The Alfred Hospital. Russell graduated in medicine from the University of Melbourne, trained in general surgery at St Vincent s Hospital, Melbourne, and then in trauma surgery and surgical critical care at Harborview Medical Centre in Seattle, USA. From 2006 to 2009 he was Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Melbourne and Royal Melbourne Hospital. He received a PhD for his study of the delivery of surgical services to remote and disadvantaged Aboriginal communities in northern Australia, and in he was a Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and a Fellow in Medical Ethics at Harvard University. The focus of Russell s recent research has been clinical quality improvement, optimising systems of surgical and trauma care, and improving the use of evidence in clinical and health policy decision-making. He leads a program of translational research in traumatic brain injury, and the National Trauma Quality Improvement Program. Russell has received research funding totalling more than $6 million, holds an NH&MRC Career Development Award, and has authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications. He has been awarded a RACS G. J. Royal Medal, a General Surgeons Australia Medal, and a Travelling Fellowship of the James IV Association of Surgeons. Russell and his wife, Theresa, have two sons, Spencer and Kody.

11 Provisional Program Invited speakers - Local Faculty Associate Professor Bill Johnson Bill Johnson is an experienced General Surgeon. He obtained his General Fellowship at Alfred Hospital then spent time in the UK working in a general surgery unit with a special interest in Vascular surgery. He moved to the US completing a Fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and then working as a General Surgeon in the Department of Surgery at the Cincinnati general Hospital. He returned to Australia and joined Alfred Hospital. Bill is the former Head of the Breast Endocrine and General Surgery Alfred Hospital, and is now the Clinical Programme Director of Surgical Services Alfred Hospital, and also works in the Breast Endocrine and General Surgery Unit. His private practice is based at St. Francis Xavier Cabrini Hospital. Dr Sarah Kemp Sarah Kemp is a VMO with the Breast, Endocrine and General Surgery Unit and the Victorian Melanoma Service at The Alfred and has a particular interest in breast cancer management. She is a VMO with Breast Screen Victoria. After finishing surgical training in Victoria she spent two years in UK doing a Fellowship at The Hull and East Yorkshire Breast Unit. Dr Kathryn Martin Kate Martin spent 3 years as an Advanced General Surgical Trainee at the Alfred Hospital. After completing her Fellowship exam in 2005, she spent a year as the Trauma Fellow at the Alfred, followed by a year at Western Health as a General Surgical Fellow, and then a year at the Royal Melbourne Hospital as a General Surgical and Thoracic Fellow. Kate is a General Surgeon, sub-specialising in Trauma Surgery. She is an instructor with the EMST and DSTC Faculties, and the Supervisor of General Surgical Training at the Alfred. Her other interests include Breast and Melanoma Surgery, and Surgical Education. Associate Professor Peter Nottle Peter Nottle is currently Head of the Upper Gastrointestinal and General Surgery Unit at The Alfred Hospital. He was previously the head of the Surgical Unit at Williamstown Hospital in Western Health. He is an Associate Professor within Monash University Department of Surgery at the Alfred Hospital. He has a major interest is in Oesophago-Gastric and Bariatric Surgery. Professor Jonathan Serpell Jonathan Serpell is Professor and Director of General Surgery at The Alfred Hospital and Monash University as well as Head of the Breast, Endocrine and General Surgery Unit at The Alfred Hospital. He is also the Head of the Breast, Endocrine Surgery and Surgical Oncology Unit at Frankston Hospital. His major research interest is in Endocrine Surgery and he obtained his Doctorate in Medicine on Soft Tissue Sarcomas. Professor Serpell is currently Chairman of the Endocrine Section of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and Senior Examiner of the Specialty Court of Examiners in General Surgery (2nd Part Examinations) at the College. He is President of the Australian Endocrine Surgeons and Speciality Editor for Endocrine Surgery with the ANZ Journal of Surgery. He established The Monash University Endocrine Surgery Unit in 2007.
12 The Alfred General Surgery Meeting The Langham Melbourne, October 2011 Invited speakers - Local Faculty Mr Stewart Skinner Stewart Skinner is a visiting surgeon with the Colorectal Service at The Alfred Hospital and Head of the Colorectal Service at Frankston Hospital. He completed a PhD Thesis on colorectal cancer in 1994 and undertook postgraduate training in Colorectal Surgery at St. Mark s Hospital in London and the Royal London Hospital. Current research interests include anal intraepithelial neoplasia, management of faecal incontinence and Laparoscopic Surgery. Mr Andrew Smith Andrew Smith is an Upper GI and Bariatric surgeon, trained through the Alfred, and in the UK. He has been working as a consultant surgeon at The Alfred and in private practice since His areas of interest include antireflux surgery, achalasia, laparoscopic hernia repair, upper GI malignancy and bariatrics. Miss Melanie Walker Melanie Walker trained in general surgery at the Alfred Hospital and obtained her FRACS in She undertook further training in breast surgery in the UK at Castle Hill Hospital, Hull, The Edinburgh Breast Unit and an Oncoplastic Fellowship at the Plastic Surgical Unit at Canniesburn, Glasgow. She returned to the Alfred as a consultant in Her special interests include oncoplastic breast surgery and breast ultrasound. She is a member of Breast Surg ANZ, the Australasian Society for Breast Disease and the Australian New Zealand Breast Cancer Trials Group. Dr Meei Yeung Meei Yeung trained through the Southern Health Network in Melbourne and was awarded her Fellowship in General Surgery in She undertook 2 years of post Fellowship training in Sydney. Her subspecialty interests include Endocrine and Trauma Surgery.
