3 About the Speakers Professor Madeleine King is the Cancer Australia Chair in Cancer Quality of Life. She holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) from the University of Sydney and a PhD in Medical Statistics from the University of Newcastle, NSW. Her interests and experience cover a range of health research disciplines including biostatistics, epidemiology, psychometrics, health economics and clinical research (both medical and nursing), with applications in cancer, asthma and dementia. She now focuses on quality of life research in cancer, particularly within the ANZ network of cancer clinical trials groups. Her key research interests are the measurement, analysis and interpretation of health-related quality of life, utility and preferences, and other patient reported-outcomes. Dr Angie Morrow is a staff specialist in paediatric rehabilitation medicine at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. She has also worked in the fields of palliative care and general paediatrics. Her research experience includes systematic reviews, randomised controlled trials, facilitation of focus groups and qualitative data analysis. Her main areas of interest are quality of life and patient reported outcomes, service delivery and patient-doctor communication. She is currently completing a PhD on the measurement of quality of life in children with chronic illness and disability. A/Professor Yun-Hee Jeon, RN, BHSc (Nursing), MN, PhD, is a new member of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery. Prior to this post she was a senior research fellow at the Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute, the Australian National University. Her main research interests are chronic and complex care, the experience of patient/family carer, nursing workforce, dementia care, and primary health care. Her recent/current projects in dementia include a dementia outcome measurement suite (DOMS) project and two RCTs investigating the effectiveness of dementia care mapping, person centred care practice and environment in improving quality of life of people with dementia and the care they receive. Yun-Hee is a member of the nursing care node for the Primary Dementia Collaborative Research Centre. A/Professor Jane Young is an epidemiologist with a medical background and specialist training as a public health physician. She has a conjoint appointment as an Associate Professor at the School of Public Health, University of Sydney and is a quantitative health services researcher. She is the principal investigator of a Health Services Research Program (CONNECT) awarded by the Cancer Institute NSW to improve care co-ordination for people with cancer. Jane has interests in the generation and synthesis of evidence for the effectiveness of health care interventions, the uptake of evidence-based practice and strategies to improve the quality of health services delivery. She is a member of the Effective Practice and Organisation of Care (EPOC) Cochrane Review Group and has been a member of the Sydney South West Health Service Ethics Review Committee (RPAH Zone) since 2000.
4 Dr Tim Luckett BSc (Hons), PhD is project manager at the Psycho-oncology Cooperative Research Group's (PoCoG) Quality of Life Office. Alongside other PoCoG staff, Tim has developed an online database of patient-reported outcome measures for use in cancer clinical research and regularly offers advice on choice of measures to cancer clinical trials groups and other researchers. He has also conducted a number of systematic reviews aimed at assisting researchers in measuring patientreported outcomes in research and clinical practice. In previous lives, Tim has worked as a speech pathologist and nursing assistant with children and adults with disabilities and mental health disorders in a range of classroom, residential and hospital settings. Dr Kathleen Scott graduated with an honours degree in Immunology and Pharmacology and a PhD in Human Parasitology from the University of Glasgow (UK). She has worked in clinical trials research for almost 14 years, in clinical, academic and pharmaceutical research environments. Since moving to Australia, she has worked at the NH&MRC Clinical Trials Centre, University of Sydney for 6 years in a senior management position Head of Site Management, overseeing the management of clinical trial sites and a number of the oncology research programs for national co-operative cancer clinical trials groups. Kathleen joined the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery in January 2009 as Senior Lecturer and is the Course Coordinator for the Masters in Clinical Trials Practice, which will commence in Her research interests are in cancer clinical research and practice. Catherine Johnson is a clinical research nurse and clinical nurse specialist based at the Calvary Mater in Newcastle (CMN) managing a range of medical oncology clinical trials. She has been working in clinical trials for 12 years and in nursing for 19 years. Catherine serves on a number of committees at state and national levels and is the Deputy Chairperson of the Cancer Nurses Society of Australia. She has published and presented nationally and internationally. The CMN is very active in the conduct of clinical trials, in particular the Department of Medical Oncology, which has an established trials program and has been involved in the conduct of clinical research since Dr Belinda Brooks is the Team leader of Clinical Trials at the Diabetes Centre, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. She is a Nurse Practitioner having gained both an MSc and PhD through the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney on projects related to diabetes vascular complications. She has worked in clinical trials for more than 20 years and is actively involved in a large number of international, multi-centre clinical trials aimed at testing the efficacy and safety of new anti-diabetic agents or compounds targeted at preventing diabetic complications. Leonie Weisbrodt RN, BN, Grad Cert ICU, MN (Hons) commenced her professional life as an intensive care nurse in 1987, and has worked as a research co-ordinator in the Nepean Hospital ICU since During that time she has co-ordinated more than 20 clinical trials recruiting more than 1000 patients, on projects ranging from pharmaceutical company sponsored international RCTs, to investigator initiated multi-national trials. More recently, she has been actively involved in nurse-led research, as an investigator on a multi-centre pilot RCT exploring sedation management and as a coordinator on a trial examining the impact of home-based rehabilitation. Leonie s current role as CNC ICU Research is enabling an increased focus on nurse-led clinical trials.
