1 POSITION DESCRIPTION Position Details: Title: Senior Medical Officer Department: Cardiothoracic and Vascular ICU (CVICU) and HDU Reports to: Location: Clinical Director, Cardiothoracic and Vascular ICU and HDU Auckland Hospital Date: November 2009 Purpose of Position: To provide an excellent standard of clinical practice and clinical expertise to the community and Region served by the Auckland District Health Board Clinical Duties 1. Manage patients in accordance with appropriate Australian and New Zealand Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine Policies, Guidelines and Recommendations. 2. Provide intensive care services to the Cardiothoracic and Vascular ICU and HDU. 3. Supervise intensive care trainees and trainees from other specialties who rotate through the CVICU. 4. Provide services related to acute resuscitation services. 5. Provide support as required and directed to the ECMO and VAD programme. 6. Provide such other clinical services as may be necessary and appropriate to the speciality. 7. Participate in clinical research as required in the CVICU and HDU In addition to the above, to be part of an on-call Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Service as required and directed. 2 Administrative Duties 1. Ensure administrative duties, relating to the proper functioning of the Department and Hospital, are carried out. 2. Provide, and participate in, appropriate educational activities for trainee specialists, RMO s, medical students, postgraduate nurses, undergraduate nurses, technicians and other para-medical staff, interested community groups for example in subjects such as basic life support. 3. Supervise the preparation of material to be used for teaching. 4. Ensure and review quality of patient care by participating in peer review and quality assurance programmes. 5. Maintain personal knowledge and skills and participating in Continuing Medical Education. 6. Contribute to activities of professional associations. 7. Carry out reviews and investigations on drugs, equipment, methods of clinical management and physiological, pharmacological and other matters relevant to intensive care, acute pain management and resuscitation. 8. Ensure research is carried out on techniques, equipment or drugs as is necessary for the proper functioning of the Department. 9. Contribute to advisory services to hospital committees, health commissions and other organisations. 10. Maintain a high standard of professional care in accordance with the NZMA Code of Ethics, Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine Policies, Guidelines and Regulations. 11 Compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements, company policies and any subsequent amendments thereto. 12 Deliver care in a sensitive fashion, taking into account cultural differences and the recognition of patient rights. 13 Ensure informed consent for all patients is obtained in accordance with the Company s policy for any operation, test or procedure The intensivist must have sufficient exposure to clinical duties to maintain skills and have sufficient time set aside for administrative, quality assurance and educational activities, to ensure a high standard of practice both at an individual and Departmental level. Annual Practising Certificate Recognition by NZMC as vocational registrant Vocational Registration in Intensive Care Annual certification of compliance with College Maintenance of Professional standards programme. 4 Credentials for Senior Medical Officer Cardiothoracic and Vascular Intensive Care Unit and High Dependency Unit of Auckland City Hospital Minimum clinical requirements in addition to those stated above. Specialist experience in intensive care for acute and elective adult cardio-thoracic surgery of all types (excluding paediatric experience). Transesophageal echocardiography experience and expertise at a specialist level for diagnosis and management of cardiac intensive care patients. Certification equivalent to NBE PTE is preferable. If not certified, certification would be desirable within two years from commencement of the position. Less recent qualifications will be reviewed from time by the department and may be required to be updated. Post graduate fellowship experience or equivalent in intensive care at a suitable institution. Academic, research and teaching Although not required, added value to the department in ongoing or previous academic, research or teaching activities is strongly recommended. The department has a formal Fellows programme. Courteous and professional teaching of fellows is a requirement. Professionalism Ethical and professional behaviour and attitude is expected and will be the strongest consideration in the appointment of successful candidates with the required clinical qualification. Good interpersonal relations with colleagues, trainees as well as admin, nursing and technical staff is a non negotiable requirement of the position Hours of work, on call and remuneration The usual workday begins at 0800 with the morning ward round. Call occurs in blocks of 48hours (or 72 hours over weekends) or differing periods by arrangement with the rosterer. Outside call the workdays will vary with the associated clinical and non clinical duties This department runs an active CME program for consultants and trainees and a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. Remuneration is based on the employment agreement (MECA) between the ASMS (Association of Salaried Medical Specialists) and the ADHB (Auckland District Health Board) for the base salary.
