Introduction As a surgeon, you are well supported by the College with over 140 professional development courses and resources delivered free of charge or for a nominal fee. These activities focus mainly on the non-technical aspects of competence relevant to all surgical specialties and include scholarship and teaching, communication, judgement and decision making, leadership, team work and professionalism. Surgical educators also have an opportunity to contribute to the community of practice that is the Academy of Surgical Educators. Professional development programming is delivered in a range of modalities including workshops, residential workshops, courses, online learning Congress. As part of the RACS Building Respect, Improving Patient Safety Action Plan, the College has mandated the completion of the Foundation Skills for Surgical Educators (FSSE) and Operating with Respect online and face to face courses for all SET Supervisors, IMG Clinical Assessors, College Education Committee members and others involved in training. The FSSE is a one-day introductory course to expand knowledge and skills in surgical teaching and education, including feedback and assessment. The Operating with Respect online module is an evidence-based training program designed to help surgeons identify discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment, understand the impact it has and show them how to deal with it effectively. The Operating with Respect Face to Face Course provides advanced training in recognising, managing and preventing discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment. The aim of this course is to strengthen patient safety by enabling participants to develop skills in respectful behaviour and practice strategies in responding to unacceptable behaviour. There are two new courses for the 2018 calendar. These include the Advanced Feedback and Surgeons as Everyday Leaders modules. In addition, there will be additional Educator Studio Sessions throughout The Educator Studio Sessions are hosted through the Academy of Surgical Educators. Furthermore, RACS recognises the importance of collaboration and interprofessional teamwork; hence a greater number of Safer Australian Surgical Teamwork courses will be delivered for Royal Australasian College of Surgeons The College of Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand

A range of elearning activities have been developed including Supervisors and Trainers for Surgical Education and Training, Keeping Trainees on Track, an electronic multi source feedback tool, Selection Interviewer Training, Clinical Assessors for IMGs, Standards of Performance and Acute Neurotrauma. Each of the professional development activities is supported by a platform on the Learning Management System that hosts slides, additional readings, discussion and podcasts. The Surgical Career Transitions Guide is an online resource that highlights the key opportunities and challenges that occur during the various stages of a surgeon s career. It consists of a progressively staged framework from when a the mid-career stage, and into the Senior Surgeon phase. It highlights the key issues that may be experienced during those periods and links these issues to relevant educational opportunities. Engaging in professional development and lifelong learning helps improve performance and professionalism. All Professional Development courses are approved under the RACS CPD Program. Fellows can expect their attendance at these activities to be populated in CPD Online within two weeks of attendance. I encourage you to participate in these educational activities that our College offers. COMMUNICATION Process Communication Model (PCM) Seminar 1 Date(s): 16 to 18 March - Brisbane, 22 to 24 June - Melbourne, 12 to 14 October - Perth, 16 to 18 November - Adelaide Duration: 3 days Modality: Workshop Cost: $1165 AUD (incl. GST) Members $1460 AUD (incl. GST) Non Members CPD points: 1 point per hour (maximum of 22 points) in Maintenance of Knowledge and Skills (Category 3) Presenters: RACS and ANZCA Fellows Audience: Fellows, IMGs, Trainees, junior doctors and other medical specialists Patient care is a team effort and a functioning team is based on effective communication. Process Communication Model (PCM) is a tool which can help surgeons understand, motivate and communicate more effectively with others. It can help detect early signs of miscommunication and thus avoid errors. PCM can also help to identify stress in the individual and others, providing participants with a means to re-connect with those they may be struggling to understand. PCM theory proposes that each person has motivational needs that must be met if that person is to be successful. These needs are different for each of the six different personality types and each person represents a combination of these types but usually one is dominant. If these needs are met positively, individuals are happier, healthier and more productive. If they are not, individuals exhibit signs of distress and do things either consciously or subconsciously to get their needs met negatively. Before the Introductory PCM course each participant is required to complete a diagnostic questionnaire which forms the basis of an individualised report about their preferred communication style. 22 Royal Australasian College of Surgeons The College of Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand

Key Learning Objectives: Establish relationships necessary to lead and develop teams Motivate the people around you according to individual needs Identify signs of distress within individuals and develop ways of responding Communicate with patients in a way that suits their preferred style of communication Process Communication Model (PCM) Seminar 2 Date(s): Duration: Modality: Cost: 14 to 16 September - Sydney 3 days Workshop $1165 AUD (incl. GST) Members $1460 AUD (incl. GST) Non Members CPD points: 1 point per hour (maximum of 20 points) in Maintenance of Knowledge and Skills (Category 3) Presenters: RACS and ANZCA Fellows Audience: Fellows, IMGs, Trainees, junior doctors and other medical specialists The advanced three day program allows surgeons to build on and deepen their knowledge while practising the skills learned during PCM Seminar 1. Participants learn more about understanding their own reactions under distress, recognising distress in others, understanding their own behaviour and making communication happen. PCM enables participants to listen to what has been said, while at the same time being aware of how it has been said. At times we are preoccupied with concentrating on what is said, formulating our own reply and focussing solely on the contents of the conversation. To communicate effectively, we need to focus on the communication channels others are using and to recognise when they are under distress. Advanced PCM concentrates more strongly on the failure mechanisms of distress, making it easier to apply PCM in order to resolve conflict and motivate others. Key Learning Objectives: Understand the underlying emotional issues each personality phase has Professional Development Activities: with your Peers

which may cause periods of long-term and intense distress Appreciate the role our early environment plays in our behaviour and how it can lead to miscommunication Synthesise how personality types, their psychological needs, communication channels, their perceptions and distress patterns all come together and are highly predictable Identify the distress patterns that are linked to particular scripts Understand how failed communication and not having our needs met may invite us into distress List the verbal and non-verbal clues that help us to assess a situation Explain how we can motivate ourselves and others to communicate effectively Note: In order to participate in PCM Seminar 2, registrants must have attended and be familiar with the content of PCM Seminar 1. COLLABORATION AND TEAMWORK Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons (NOTSS) Date(s): 17 March - Melbourne, 6 July - Adelaide, 21 September - Brisbane, 5 October - Auckland, 23 November - Sydney Duration: 1 day Modality: Blended Cost: $460 AUD (incl. 27 surgeon s performance in the theatre. The rating system identifies behavioural markers that contribute to superior or substandard performance in relation to situational awareness, communication, decision making and leadership/ teamwork. A faculty of RACS Fellows lead participants through a series of interactive exercises to help them explore how these markers can be used to reflect on their own performance and that of the Trainees and surgeons they work with. Key Learning Objectives: Gain a better understanding of how non-technical skills underpin safer operative performance Use structured observation and a rating scale to assess non-technical skills Safer Australian Surgical Teamwork (SAST) Date(s): 2 June - Melbourne, 6 June - Adelaide, 21 July - Sydney, 4 August - Brisbane, 16 November - Auckland, 24 November - Perth Duration: 1 day Modality: Blended Cost: Refer to website CPD points: 1 point per hour (maximum of 8 points) in Maintenance of Knowledge and Skills (Category 3) Presenters: ACN, ACORN, ANZCA and RACS Fellows Audience: Nurses, anaesthetists and surgeons The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) with the Australasian College of Anaethetists (ANZCA), the Australian College of Nursing (ACN) and Australian College of Operating Room Nurses (ACORN), is offering a combined workshop for surgeons, anaesthetists and scrub practitioners working in rural and regional Australia. The workshop focuses on non-technical skills which can enhance performance and teamwork in the operating theatre thus improving patient safety. This one day workshop involves surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses as both faculty and participants learning about human factors and non-technical skills (NTS) in order to improve intraoperative team performance and patient outcomes. The workshop explores skills using three frameworks developed by The University of Aberdeen, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the National Health Service - Non-Technical Professional Development Activities: with your Peers

Skills for Surgeons (NOTSS), Anaesthetists Non-Technical Skills (ANTS) and Scrub Practitioners List of Intra-operative Non-Technical Skills (SPLINTS).
