Fall 2017 Newsletter The UH Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center is now located at the lower level of the UH Lauren Emergency Center, at the rear of the main building. Enter through the doors to the right of the 'Ambulance Only' sign; the Center is immediately to your right. The Union Hospital Sleep Medicine Center has relocated to the main hospital building. You can find the Sleep Medicine Center adjacent to the Emergency Center on the first floor. INFORMATION For the latest news, events and schedules, check out: UnionHospital.org FirstCare, Union Hospital s urgent care service, has relocated its operations to a new, highly accessible location in the new UPS Family Health Center North building in North Dover, across the street from Buehler s Fresh Foods. The new location is just off I-77 at Exit 85 (Schneiders Crossing Rd.). FirstCare has its own dedicated entrance with plenty of parking and modern patient facilities. Patients and their families will notice the improvements as soon as they walk through the door, said Darrin Lautenschleger, director of community relations at Union Hospital. A clearly marked registration desk is just inside the entrance, and staff members are there to assist them. The new location also will provide more patient exam rooms and technology for patient care. The location just off I-77 is very convenient for patients in Tuscarawas and surrounding counties, Lautenschleger said. We identified the new location as being ideal because so many use I-77 as a primary travel route. FirstCare is open seven days a week, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is closed on major holidays. has convenient new location in North Dover, just off I-77 FirstCare offers immediate medical services for patients who do not require the resources of the UH Lauren Emergency Center, or at times when their family doctors are not available. Patients are seen on a walk-in basis; no appointment is needed. Physician services are provided by community-based members of the Union Hospital medical staff. Laboratory testing and X-ray services also are offered on site. As a department of Union Hospital, FirstCare provides for a quick and accurate flow of patient medical information to the patient's family physician and Union Hospital. FirstCare accepts AultCare, Medicare, Medicaid and most other insurance plans. For more information, call FirstCare at (330) or visit the FirstCare page on the hospital s website at

Fall Heartburn Treatment Center opens at Union Hospital Many people don t think much about heartburn until after eating a loaded sub or some pizza with the works. And for most, chewing on a couple of antacid tablets will cure the heartburn problem. But for nearly one-third of heartburn sufferers in America, these troublesome heartburn symptoms cannot be easily eliminated and represent a significant life-altering condition called Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD. Fortunately, relief for people suffering from GERD in the Tuscarawas Valley is now available at Union Hospital. Our Heartburn Treatment Center is now open and gives area residents and their physicians a specialized center right inside the hospital that focuses on the accurate diagnosis and state-of-the-art therapies to address all types of GERD cases and conditions. New patients are being accepted and a doctor s referral is not necessary for an evaluation. For a free consultation, appointments and other information, contact The Heartburn Treatment Center at (330) A complete diagnostic evaluation is followed by development of a treatment plan tailored for each individual patient. Multiple treatment options are available through the center, including medical therapies as well as minimally invasive surgical options. All patients with GERD can be offered relief. The center has a team of hospital physicians who have received special training to provide individual treatment strategies as needed. The physician team includes the following: Robert M. Levitt, M.D., of UPS Regional Surgical Specialists Joseph N. Zemis, M.D., of UPS Regional Surgical Specialists Marcus Cox, M.D., of UPS Regional Surgical Specialists Jack E. Kehl III, M.D., of UPS Regional Surgical Specialists Blair T. Holder, M.D., of Tuscarawas County Medical Specialties The center is being developed in collaboration with Legato Medical Systems, which specializes in the multi-disciplinary therapy of GERD and utilizes a proven disease management process focused on clinical excellence and patient service. Legato s program coordinates diagnostic and treatment services so that patients efficiently are offered all appropriate options in resolving their reflux symptoms. Heartburn is the most common symptom of GERD, with other symptoms including regurgitation, chronic cough, hoarseness and chest pain. It is caused by the backup of stomach acid into the esophagus (swallowing tube), resulting in irritation of the fragile lining of the esophagus. More than 30 percent of Americans suffer from GERD symptoms, and most can be treated effectively with over-the-counter or prescription medications. Once you have GERD, you have it for life and treatment choices must be considered with this in mind. In addition, many years of heartburn clearly has been associated with an increased risk of developing cancer of the esophagus. A cancer risk assessment is part of the evaluation conducted at The Heartburn Treatment Center at Union Hospital and is very important for all chronic GERD sufferers. Did you know? Nearly 20 million Americans suffer from GERD. GERD-induced esophageal cancer has increased 600% since 1975, making it the fastest-growing cancer in terms of incidence. Increased pressure on your abdomen from being overweight can cause GERD Left untreated, GERD can lead to more serious health problems over time. 2

Union Physician Services Our Team Working Together For Your Family s Health The team at Union Physician Services (UPS) is your family s primary resource for healthcare in the Tuscarawas Valley. UPS is the healthcare provider network operated by Union Hospital and has physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses and many more staff members dedicated to serving each patient's needs. The team is bolstered by the talents of other unsung UPS staff members who connect patients with the proper medical provider, ensure that appointments are made and follow-up needs are handled swiftly and accurately, and coordinate healthcare needs with individual insurance plans. UPS builds its team around four primary care (family care) practices, as well as a general surgery practice, orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine practice, dermatology practice and neurology practice. The four primary care practices are: Alpine Family Medicine at Sugarcreek Newcomerstown UPS UPS Central on the campus of Union Hospital UPS Family Health Center North in Dover The specialty practices are East Ohio Orthopaedics at Dover, and UPS Regional Surgical Specialists, UPS Dermatology and UPS Neurology Center, all on the campus of Union Hospital. We ve built our team around the strength of a dedicated group of medical professionals who believe in each other and have a singular goal to provide for the needs of our patients, said Chris Beck, vice president of operations at Union Hospital. UPS is breaking down barriers to ensure that patients who need medical services in our area are taken care of in a timely and caring manner. Each patient we serve has the benefit of our entire UPS team available to them when needs arise, Beck said. There s no reason that we shouldn t be able to help the patients of the Tuscarawas Valley through the expertise of our staff at UPS and Union Hospital. For more details, see 3

Paint Tusc Pink raises breast cancer awareness P ink is in during the month of October in the Tuscarawas Valley. Tuscarawas County businesses, schools and offices again covered themselves in pink paint, posters and displays for the annual Paint Tusc Pink campaign to generate attention for Breast Cancer Awareness in October. Paint Tusc Pink is a free annual community program sponsored by Union Hospital s Community Health and Wellness Department and the Regional Cancer Center at Union Hospital, and is co-sponsored by Trinity Hospital Twin City s Community Outreach Department, the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce and WJER Radio. And while the pink theme creates a lot of fun for participants, the more important, potentially life-saving message about the importance of women having annual mammograms for early detection of breast cancer is being received, too. In recent years, the Susan G. Komen Foundation reported that the number of women in the Tuscarawas Valley who have been diagnosed with breast cancer had increased, but death rates from the disease are down. The Komen Foundation reports a decline in breast cancer deaths, which indicates that breast cancer is being diagnosed more often because more women are having mammograms. Events such as Paint Tusc Pink increase awareness and encourage women to have mammograms on an annual basis as they take charge of their overall health. Both hospitals serve as contact points for the free Paint Tusc Pink yard signs that can be used as part of displays. Hospital staff members take photos of displays around the region and feature them on social media, too. In addition, both hospitals sponsored free special events in October to help promote awareness. Union Hospital s Community Health and Wellness Department and the Regional Cancer Center at Union Hospital hosted Beauty Within: Building Confidence and Managing Stress, a free women s health event held Oct. 17 in the Founders Hall Auditorium at Kent State University at Tuscarawas. The event featured Dr. Chinyere Orafu of the Ohio Laser and Wellness Center in Dover, who is an OB/GYN physician on the medical staff at Union Hospital. She was joined by a panel of women s health experts for an evening of fun and information. Holiday Season Kicks Off with Warther s Christmas Tree Festival T he Union Hospital Auxiliary's Warther s Christmas Tree Festival was held November 11 through 19. This was the 24th year the festival has kicked off the holiday season in the Tuscarawas Valley. Visitors to the 24th annual event, again held at Warther Carvings at Dover, were treated to a variety of beautifully decorated trees with varying themes that are always a hit. The primary corporate sponsor of the event this year was Huntington Bank, while the room sponsors included Dover Hydraulics Co., Parkway Auto Group and WTUZ Radio. Christmas trees, wreaths, holiday arrangements and the entire lobby display were available for purchase. Proceeds from the sale of festival items are donated by the auxiliary to Union Hospital for the purchase of patient care equipment and facility improvements. The festival s success is a tribute to the hard work of the members of the auxiliary, the support of the sponsors and the thousands of people who come to see the trees and purchase them, said Connie Finton, a member of the UH Auxiliary and chairperson of the festival. Senior Day, sponsored by The Inn at Northwood Village at Dover, was held on Monday, Nov. 13. People aged 60 and older paid half price admission to enjoy the trees and refreshments. The popular Children s Christmas Tree Workshops were held on Saturday, November 18 at Warther. Children were given their own 18-inch lighted tree to decorate and take home for Christmas. The workshops were sponsored by Hawk Family Dental Care. 4

The Union Hospital Association 659 Boulevard Dover, Ohio Healthy Living is published two times a year by the Department of Community Relations President and CEO Bruce James Director of Community Relations Darrin Lautenschleger Bright future for Union Hospital STAY CONNECTED: Like us on Facebook to get the latest health tips, learn about our free health screenings, community events and more. Union Hospital has spent 2017 peering into its future and studying how to secure high quality healthcare services at affordable costs for the Tuscarawas Valley for generations to come. And that future for the hospital and more importantly, the patients of Union Hospital is very bright. The hospital signed a letter of intent with the Cleveland Clinic in the spring to become part of the Clinic health system early in The two hospitals have been working on the details of a legal agreement before sending it off for the required state and federal regulatory reviews. The Union Hospital Board of Trustees is looking forward to expanding services and resources available through the hospital and its affiliated operations in the area. Under the guidance and management of the Cleveland Clinic, Union has the opportunity to add physicians, grow services and become fiscally stronger. When we entered into this process in 2016, the primary goal was to secure the financial resources and future of the hospital for the Tuscarawas Valley community, said Bruce James, president and CEO of Union Hospital. But it became evident early on that while our financial picture had moved us to this point, what we also wanted to do was to not only ensure the services we provide will be available far into the future, but to also expand our services and provide more physicians and providers for our community. Our future with the Cleveland Clinic will address all of those goals for Union Hospital. The Cleveland Clinic has a rich history of putting patients first and providing quality healthcare, and it continues to develop new relationships with physicians. Union Hospital and Cleveland Clinic will keep the community updated as the process continues.
