3 PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The Nurse Educator (NE) role operates within the People and Professional Development Team of Counties Manukau Health (CMH). The primary responsibilities of the NE are to provide expertise in facilitating assessment, planning and delivery of professional development (PD) activities for staff within and across services. The role also supports these activities across the wider health community in support of CMH strategic objectives. This includes: Working within the People and Professional Development Team to provide PD planning and education to support and grow staff. Working with clinical services to support their strategic direction through training, education and development of the workforce to meet the needs of patients, family/whaanau. Working with the organisational teams to ensure a matrix approach is used to determine goals and support delivery of staff development activities. Evaluating and or assessing effectiveness/quality of activities e.g. post implementation review. PLACE IN THE ORGANISATION Position description: Counties Manukau Health 3

4 NATURE AND SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES Key Accountabilities Standards / Achievements Professional Development Team and Service Provision Enhance and drive a positive patient and family/whaanau experience through staff development Undertake learning needs analysis within services Provide professional development activities to Nurses developing inter-professional ways of working with other professional groups across the organisation Provide direct/indirect support, leadership development (coaching and mentoring) for staff Work with senior staff in services to develop service goals and quality objectives Contribute to the development of policies and procedures Contribute to the identification of research and quality initiatives and link with Ko Awatea resource Ensure organisational strategies and messages are clear within effective/sustainable learning activities Collaboratively support the Professional Development Recognition Programme (PDRP) processes for nursing ensuring organisational and nursing objectives are achieved. Engage with those who develop staff improvement plans ensuring the transfer of learning is appropriate. Collaborate with team members to ensure all learning activities are delivered efficiently and effectively capturing a wide audience. 5 People and Professional Development Team Seek out expertise within the people and professional development team to enhance the provision of excellence in learning assessment, delivery and evaluation Identify opportunities for inter-professional collaboration in the delivery of professional development Involvement at the strategic level to ensure information and the implementation of new ideas/ innovations/ strategies have a flow on enabling results to be achieved in a realistic manner at the delivery level. Link with Nurse / Midwife Educator colleagues and the wider teams to ensure staff receive high quality educational input and support Encourage critical thinking and an evidenced based approach to practice Contribute to quality and continuous improvement Cultural Safety & Diversity Actively participate in own Performance Review and Development process identifying own learning needs and goals Actively participate in relevant professional organisations and forums Consistently demonstrate professionalism in all activities Ensures that any technology utilised adheres to the social media, code of ethics and conduct of conduct policies Proactively embraces e-technology Commitment to the principles of Treaty of Waitangi Honouring Diversity Respect, sensitivity, cultural awareness is evident in interpersonal relationships. 6 KEY ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS Will be required to interact on a regular basis with a range of Counties Manukau Health staff members including: Manager Professional Development Team Lead Peers Nurse / Midwifery Educators, and Allied Health staff undertaking educational roles Internal Counties Manukau Health staff Staff supporting learning across the continuum Professional Development Team Leader (cluster leads) Managers within services (specific as per cluster) Clinical Nurse Directors Deputy Chief Nurse Chief Nurse and Director of Patient and Whaanau Experience Externally there will be contact with: Tertiary Education Providers Regional and national networks Age Related Residential Care, Primary Health Organisations Locality Leadership Groups Situations may often call for tact, diplomacy and will require information to be handled in a discreet and sensitive manner. In conflict situations will be required to exercise sound judgement, negotiation and persuasiveness skills, toward facilitating a workable outcome. COMPLEXITY AND SCOPE With the need to future-proof our workforce to meet current and prospective population needs a move towards life-long learning for all is the goal. The People and Professional Developemnt Team is charged with shaping and supporting this goal and the role of the NEs are crucial in this endeavour. The role will work collaboratively with inter-professional colleagues in the planning, supporting and delivery of [planned and responsive] professional development. There will also be a need to collaborate and participate in communication and development activities supporting the wider CMH community. Position description: Counties Manukau Health 6

Ensure all professional development activities support tangible organisational and professional development outcomes. Maintain and strengthen links to clinical services to meet the needs of the Strategic Annual Plan and services. Work with the whole of system CMH teams in change, moving towards a contemporary learning future with a lifelong learning philosophy. DIMENSION OF THE POSITION Will be responsible to the Professional Development Team Lead for the achievement of agreed objectives and operates within the confines of Counties Manukau Health. 8 PERSON SPECIFICATIONS (requirements for the role) Minimum Preferred Qualifications Commitment to ongoing post graduate studies. Registered Nurse with current NZ Annual Practicing Certificate. Experience (including years) Four years clinical experience post registration. Experience in delivering professional development and learning activities. Knowledge and understanding of the principles of adult education. Compliance with NZNC Portfolio requirements. Expert level Registered Nurse. Coaching and mentoring skills. Post Graduate Certificate with a focus on Education. Quality improvement methodology knowledge and application. Work experience with understanding Human factors and simulation. Curriculum design and evaluation. Skills/Knowledge/ Behaviour Technical Competent skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Onestaff, Incident reporting system. Audit and evaluation skills. Online teaching and learning expertise. Strategic Relationships Can role model strategies that ensure important messages are cascaded and clearly understood through strategic, operational and delivery levels. Uses clear and effective communication to build and maintain strong relationships.
