2 The purpose of the Registered Nurse Clinical Coach role: : To support the clinical education & practice development needs of nursing staff undertaking the Nursing Entry to Practice programme and new to the. To provide clinical teaching at the bed side with nurses. The Registered Nurse Clinical Coach for : Works in clinical practice settings alongside nurses in direct clinical care delivery to role model good nursing practice [80%] Uses clinical teaching/coaching skills to support clinical decision making in practice for all nurses Ensures that nurses receive the assistance and support that they require to be safe Ensures that nurses apply the learning plan and are assessed as competent Support facilitation of study days. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES Domain One Professional responsibility Includes accountabilities for professional, legal, ethical and culturally safe practice. This includes being able to demonstrate advanced critical thinking, judgement and accountability for own actions and decisions Practices nursing to demonstrate professional responsibility Meets the domains of competent practice as outlined by Nursing Council of New Zealand. Includes demonstrated ability to apply the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi to nursing practice Role models professional practice to a high standard to support nurses practice with competent professional standards of the professional, ethical and relevant legislated requirements. Supports preceptors to direct, monitor and evaluate new nurses Works as a highly proficient /expert registered nurse at Level 3/4, to assist nurses assess patient needs, plan care and evaluate effectiveness. Assists with clinical care delivery, as nurses undertake interventions in a safe manner Supports nurses to ensure that there is a safe environment to enable client safety, independence, quality of life and health is achieved. Seeks advice from Nurse Consultant Nursing Development and Nurse Consultant Professional Advisor in a timely manner regarding professional issues Pursues a program of self-development to broaden critical thinking and leadership skills. Engages in activities of continuous learning, including in-service, self-learning, study days, post graduate study. Participates in nursing and organisational activities and committees Has presented own portfolio for assessment that meets the Nursing Council of New Zealand competencies Understands support structure available for staff in PRDP processes and provides assistance and encouragement Domain Two Management of nursing care Includes accountability related to patient/client assessment and management of advanced nursing care that is supported by evidence Supports and coaches nurses in the management of nursing care Coaches nurses to undertake a comprehensive and accurate nursing assessment of clients in a variety of settings, using organised and systematic assessment and tools and methods to collect data. Applies relevant research to underpin nursing assessment. Coaches nurses in critical thinking/ clinical reasoning to enable early intervention for the sickest / deteriorating patients Role models skilled administration of interventions, treatments and medications within legislative, codes and scope of practice and according to authorised prescription, established policy and guidelines Coaches so that timely care / appropriate medical assistance is achieved for patients whose condition is assessed as of concern. Encourages escalation of concerns to the to appropriate others Models communication of issues to the right people at the right time, including documentation of emergency situations (incident report) Shows good clinical teaching/coaching skills to achieve change in clinical practice Documentation of new graduate progress is accurate and maintains confidentiality of information. Coaches staff to maintain clear, concise, timely and current client records within legal and ethical framework. Undertake competence assessments by working alongside nurses. Documents observations to provide the CNM and HOD with insight into issues requiring follow-up. Links with the after-hours support team to ensure there is continued support for staff providing complex clinical care across the 24 hours Assists with nurse teaching and assessment Work with the senior nurses in particular NE / to plan learning opportunities for the service to meet current and strategic priorities Facilitate and deliver learning opportunities Diagnostic Unit. 4 Focus learning on clinical competence development Prepares and leads teaching sessions that achieve learning outcomes Completes assessments with the Nurse Educator in a timely and systematic manner Feedback shows respectful style/manner Leads defusing and debriefing processes with nurses and teams, involving multi-disciplinary team members Works with other health providers to enhance the skill and knowledge of nurses caring for patients across the hospital-community interface Models referral and discharge processes for new graduate nurse learning, engaging the interdisciplinary team Assist the Service Nurse Educator and S&A Senior nurses with programme evaluation Domain Three Interpersonal relationships and enhancing the patient experience Includes accountability for interpersonal and therapeutic communication with clients/patients and members of the health care team. 6 PERSON SPECIFICATION POSITION TITLE: Registered Nurse - Clinical Coach Assessment and Diagnostic Unit Registered Nurse [RCpN, RGON, BHsC] with current annual practicing Qualification certificate in New Zealand Continued development through post-registration education and learning opportunities, e.g. commenced post graduate education at PG Certificate level Experience Minimum of 5 years post registration experience across acute care setting in Medical and/or surgical nursing, preferably has worked in the Assessment & Diagnostic Unit for some time and achieved RN 3 in this setting Preferably Level 4 or Level 3, applying for Level 4 recognition Contemporary nursing knowledge and skill at a senior level with knowledge of evidence based practice requirements, with advanced assessment skills and critical thinking in this acute challenging environment Has reputation for providing good nursing care and ability to share evidence based clinical knowledge with others, both one-to-one and group learning within the clinical area. Ability to effectively share clinical knowledge with others and help transform practice Previous experience of clinical coaching and teaching. Reputation of selfinitiated behaviour Dynamic and creative approach to nursing care and education Excellent communicator, highly articulate, excellent listening skills.
